Hot news

“Hi,” Mave said. Gabe flashed her his best customer service smile.
“He’s on the swing shift with Beka,” I said.
Gabe walked to the register Mave just finished preparing and signed in. When it popped open, he pulled the paper out, and started counting the till.
“Is she here yet, or is she on her knees sucking dick somewhere?” Gabe asked.
“Gabe,” I warned. When he put a dash down next to the ones, he lifted his head and look over his shoulder at me. He flashed me a smile and feigned innocence.
“Sorry, has she been dropped off?” He asked, his gaze going to the bathroom.
“No, she hasn’t,” I said stubbornly. Gabe groaned and turned back to his till. I sighed as he started on the fives.
“Who’s Beka?” Mave asked. I glared at Gabe’s back and he blew me a kiss even though he couldn’t see me. The last thing I liked to do was gossip and he knew it. I wasn’t going to start today.
“You’ll meet her sometime this week. She’s a good worker,” I said. Gabe snorted and I fought the urge to flip him off. I could feel the smile and eye twitch. I loved Gabe, but he loved trying to break character at work. There were cameras here and I did not want to be caught flipping off an employee. Mave’s eyes darted to Gabe before landing on me.
“You did a good job today. I’ll see you tomorrow at four,” I said before she could ask me anything else.
The look of surprise on Mave’s face was priceless. Someone was definitely not used to being dismissed, but I didn’t care. It didn’t matter to me who she was or what she did. We weren’t in her packhouse, or mine. We were at work, basically pretending to be human, so I’d say that puts us all on the same playing field. Unless she’s paying my bills and putting food in my fridge, she’s just someone I have to work with.
“You’ll check out on whatever till is available,” I said. I nodded my head towards my till and she walked over. “If you forgot how to, I can help you.”
“I’ll be okay,” she said. When she was done, she took off her apron and hung it up where she got it. “I’ll be heading out then,” she said as she grabbed her bag.
“I’ll see you in the morning. When you come in, you can get a free drink. That’s one of the benefits working here,” I said.
“That’s great. See you in the morning. Bye Gabe,” Mave said.
“Bye,” Gabe said.
When the sliding door closed, I took off my apron and hung it up on a hook. Gabe put his till back into the register and turned to me.
“She did a good job with cleaning the machine. How was it? Did you miss me?” He asked.
“So much,” I scoffed. “It was fine. I just don’t like having a stranger in my space. I guess I’ll get over it.”
“You don’t know who she is?” Gabe asked.
“Am I supposed to know her?” I asked skeptically.
“Uh, only you wouldn’t,” Gabe chuckled. He folded his arms in front of his chest and leaned back against the counter. There was a gleam in his eye. Gabe loved telling me about what was happening in the wolf world, but I usually ignored him. He was a social butterfly and had a way of knowing things. We had this little joke between us where I said his knowledge came from the little birds he had around the area.“She’s only the baby sister of the new Alpha of the Dark Moon Pack.”
“Gasp!” I said in mock shock before I burst into laughter.
“You’re sooo funny,” Gabe said sarcastically. I closed my eyes and gave him my widest smile.
“And… when have I ever cared about any of the surrounding packs, Gabe?” I asked.
Reaching up, I gripped the black material holding my hair up. I hissed as I pulled the rubber band from my hair. My hair fell down my back and I shook it out. I sighed. Free, finally free. I preferred my hair down and only put it up for work, or when I needed to do something and had to lie to myself about being a productive person.
“Fine, you got me there, but this is kind of important. Dark Moon pack isn’t just a surrounding pack. It’s the closest one to us and we both know they own this coffee stand almost every business in this human town,” Gabe said.
“Mm, semantics,” I said. He pushed off the counter and walked toward me. I looked up at him as he ruffled my fringe bangs until he was happy where they fell. “Thanks,” I said. Gabe gave a dramatic bow.
“Plus, it’s only been the hottest news for the last 2 months!” Gabe said excitedly.
“Mm, is that what the little birds shared with you?” I asked. The question may or may not have had a bit of sass.
“As a matter of fact, yes,” Gabe answered.
“Mm, of course. Please share your great knowledge. What’s so hot?” I asked, exaggeratedly.
“Not just what, but who,” Gabe said. His eyebrow arched as he smiled at me.
“Mm, a man. How did I not see that coming?” I joked. I shook my head.
“I’m serious, Ady!” Gabe exclaimed. I stuck my tongue out at him and Gabe gave me his ‘I’m not kidding’ look.
“Okay, okay. Tell me,” I said.
“The new alpha of Dark Moon hails from a pack up north, but he’s been going pack to pack forcing alliances. If they don’t acknowledge him, he kills the alpha and takes over their territory before moving on to the next pack within the week..”
“And this is hot news why?” I asked.
“Because Dark Moon is his latest conquest, but he hasn’t moved on in 2 months! It doesn’t stop there,” Gabe said hurriedly.
“Of course it doesn’t,” I sighed.
“He’s moved here, Ady. The birds say he’s looking for his Luna,” Gabe said.
