Tied

My throat tightens and I feel as if all of the air is being sucked out of the hallway. The cold stone behind the painting causes a shiver to run down my back. I’m close to accepting my fate when he doesn’t move, knowing this might be the last time I ever leave my room when Alpha takes a deep breath.
My eyes are as wide as saucers as I struggle to keep calm despite the panic that threatens to suffocate me. When his footsteps continue until they’re out of earshot, I let out a small breath of relief. I creep out from behind the drapes and walk towards the door. Cries can be heard on the other side. I grab the door handle and pull it open.
“Alpha?” A female voice asked.
“No,” I said as I moved into the room.
She gasped as I came into view. My gaze darted around the room until they landed on the one bed by the window. The room was the same size as mine, but empty except for a chest for clothing. It was my turn to be shocked, when my eyes landed on the woman in bed. Naked with nothing but a sheet to cover herself, sat Mave with red puffy eyes.
“How?” I asked.
Her piercing gray eyes had lost the edge I remembered. She seemed smaller than I remembered. The last time I had seen her I had to sneak out of her brother’s window. She is family… she was supposed to be my family. How had we both ended up chained to the same man?
“How are you here?” I repeated. Guilt filled her eyes before they filled with tears.
“Since the meeting at the Alpha Table,” Mave whispered.
“I risk a lot by being here. I came to look for you, but I didn’t think I would find you here… with him,” I said.
“I know of your relationship… but I can’t give him up,” Mave said.
“… Are you serious right now?” I asked.
“I’m sorry,” Mave said as tears filled her eyes.
“You’re sorry about what? Do you know what you’re saying? Did he kidnap you? How could you… how could you love a monster?” I asked.
Tears blurred my vision and I shook my head. She was going to be my one tie to him, she was going to have answers for me. This isn’t what I expected, she isn’t what I expected. Mave flinched as she tried to get up.
“No,” I whispered.
“It’s not what you’re thinking! It’s more. Please, let me explain,” Mave said.
“Explain what? That you’re in love with the enemy? That you’re in love with the person that’s kept me prisoner here? You’re… what about..” I trailed off.
“He’s my mate, Adealine. He’s my mate and I love him. I can’t betray him, I could never do anything to hurt him. Please,” she begged. Tears streamed down my cheeks.
“What about me? Will you hurt me, will you hurt him for your love?” I asked. She closed her eyes. When she opened them again, there was a finality, there was an understanding in her eyes that I didn’t like.
“I can’t make him do what he doesn’t want. I can’t make him do things he doesn’t want to. I don’t control him, I don’t own him. I’m not at fault for the things that he does,” she said hysterically.
“Do you hear yourself right now?!” I screamed.
“I love him, I won’t leave him, and I won’t help you. I can’t. I…” she trailed off.
The sound of footsteps coming up the stairs had my eyes widening. I looked toward the door and back to her. She had an apologetic look on her face. She mouthed the words ‘I’m sorry’ and I knew what she’d done. She had to have linked him when she closed her eyes.
“How could you?” I asked.
“We keep no secrets from each other,” she whispered.
“Mave,” I breathed.
“I’ve waited to find my mate since I was a little girl. I wanted to find the one the Goddess made for me,” she said, shaking her head. “Little did I know that he was so much more… He’s my mated pair,” she whispered in awe.
“Mated pair? Do you mean mate?” I asked.
“You wouldn’t understand and it’s something I can’t speak to you about. I can’t speak to anyone about it. That’s the only explanation I can give you,” she said.
“Please,” I begged.
“I’m sorry. I’m tied to him in a way you could never understand. Whatever notions you have about me, cast them aside. Whatever you wanted to ask me, don’t bother. I won’t help you,” Mave said. I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. “You couldn’t expect me to hide the fact that you’d been here from him, could you?” Mave asked.
I didn’t know her well, but I had an idea of who she was, or used to be. The woman that stared at me wasn’t the same one who slapped me across the face. The woman in front of me wasn’t the same one who glared at me when she saw me with her brother. The woman in front of me wasn’t the same woman I had once met. She was something entirely different now. I shook my head as the door banged against the wall as he stomped in.
His growl was the only warning. He was behind me in a flash, his hand grabbed a fistful of hair, and I cried out as I was yanked backwards. I landed on my backside as he pulled me from the room. I grabbed my head, my hair, his hand as he dragged me down the stairs. I tried to grab onto something, anything. My head hit the steps on the way down and I cried out as my head slammed against the corner of the wall. I whimpered as blood seeped down the side of my face. Unapologetic gray eyes haunted me until I lost consciousness.
