Washed clean
Shane
“I look forward to seeing the future you create,” Alpha Joshua said.
Whatever motivated him to make this decision, whatever made him so willing to lower himself and offer me my birthright as if it were something simple, something small like a cup of water, it mattered not. Too many time has passed and many things had changed since I’d left. Not only here, but with me. I could not take any chances, nor would I be made a fool. He had already declared in front of all of these people that I was the next heir.
I was the Alpha.
He admitted defeat.
I take one last step forward and it brings me right in front of him. We’re face to face now. I extend my claws and in the next breath, I slice his throat open. Their are shouts of anguish, gasps of shock, and the dropping of women’s bodies as they faint. His eyes widen as blood spurted and splattered across my face. He releases the crown and it drops to the floor with a thud. He blinks and makes a gurgling sound as his hands come up to his throat. Nothing can bed done to close the wound and nothing can save him now. It was when that realization flashed across his eyes that he fell back on the throne. Blood continues to gush from the deep wound.
My predecessor opens his mouth to speak, but blood gushes out instead. I watch as it seeps from his mouth and drips from his chin. The blood from his neck runs like the river down the mountain that is his body. I watch as the alpha, my father, struggles and fails to take in a breath. He slumps to the floor, his blood dripping down the throne and washing it clean. He stares up at me and I down at him. We couldn’t have stayed there long like that but it feels like an eternity.
After I’ve watched the light leave his eyes and take in the look of shock that’s frozen on his face, I lean over and pick up the crown stained red by his side. It feels like I’ve fallen asleep and this is all a dream.
Reclaiming my birthright wasn’t supposed to be this…
The rubies twinkle at me and as much as it feels like a dream, I know it isn’t. The crowd gasps as I kicked him to the side and step over his dead body. I turn and face the front as I take a seat on the throne. The room goes quiet and I look over the warriors, the guests, and my sister. I had wondered if she would be saddened by his death, but that’s not what I saw as she stared back at me. She smiled at me as tears ran down her cheeks. I stared into her eyes as I placed the crown on the top of my head. As soon as it sat in place, the link opened and I inhaled sharply as I was connected to everyone in the pack. The bond cemented and it was official. The room was silent as they waited for my next move.
“I am Shane Hayes, the new Alpha of the Dark Moon pack,” I declared.
“What are you doing?” Mave asked as she turned to face the room. “Bow to your Alpha,” she hissed.
As if released from a spell, the guests began to fall to their knees. Trent was the first of the warriors to take a knee, the rest of the warriors followed. It was my father’s ranked men, the closest to him, that had ran forward. They hadn’t fallen to their knees, instead, they continued to stare down at the slayed alpha.
They fell to their feet in front of me and I sighed. I looked down at the floor. A sliver of silver caught my eye. Automatically, I reached down and y hand froze as it landed on a sword—the sword.
The Alpha’s Sword.
I gripped the handle and pulled it out. It was heavy with the sins of my father and those before him, but it felt right. I stood to my feet and didn’t think twice before I brought. it down on the Beta’s neck. It was a clean cut and his head dropped to the floor, followed by his body. Blood spurted from his body onto the Gamma as he stared at him in shock. He opened his mouth to scream, but nothing came out.
The Gamma looked up at me and his hands went out as if that would be enough to protect him. He started blabbering words like he welcomed you, he wanted to give you everything, you gave you your birthright. I lifted the sword and brought it down on his head. Flesh split for me, just like it had with the animals I had butchered. His eyes rolled into the back of his head as his skull gave way and blood ran down his face.
Why had I waited so long?
I lowered myself to my seat and leaned back. I lifted the sword effortlessly and placed it on my lap as I looked out into the crowd. I motioned for my sister to come forward. She obeyed and walked around the bodies. She didn’t stop until she was at my side.
“Maveline Hayes, will act as Beta until I have my Beta of choice here. At that time, Mavelin will take her rightful place as my Gamma,” I announced.
“A woman?” Someone asked.
Whispers broke out and I snarled. They wanted to protest about a woman holding a rank and having a title, but they didn’t have anything to say when I butchered their Alpha down.
“If anyone has a problem with who I choose to lead Dark Moon, please, step forward. You can join them,” I warned.
I motioned to the bodies that lay at my feet on the floor. The whispers died instantly and the eyes that had been on me dropped. If they thought they could question my decisions, they would learn quickly that wouldn’t be accepted.
They would obey, or they would fall.
