Possibility

Shane
Silence fills the air and my sister holds her breath as we stare at each other. Her words marinate and sink into my bones, but all that does is drive the beast within me mad. My wolf rattles against the cage that my weakness, my injuries have put him in.
“It matters not what he’s done to her, whether he claims her, parades her around for the other Alphas to see, or… or marks her. She is mine and will always be mine. Her soul is intertwined with mine,” I said.
“What if she doesn’t want you anymore?” Mave asked.
“That isn’t even a possibility,” I said.
“Are you sure? You left her knowing full well what would happen if you left. If I were in her place I wouldn’t be able to. I doubt I would be able to even stomach looking at you. And what? You’re fine with her being marked? You can’t change that. That’s written into the stars, it’s written into our bones. We cannot go against the mark, Shane,” Mave said.
“She won’t have to,” I murmured.
“What are you going to do?” Mave asked.
“Did you think this was all to let her go? No, it doesn’t matter to me what he does to her. I’ll kill him, Mave. All of this has been so that I can be brought one step closer to him. One step closer to surpassing him. I’m going to kill him,” I promised.
My sister sighed, her chin lowered, and she closed her eyes tightly. I leaned my head back against the wall as the water from the waterfall came down angrily. I hated that my body was weak and that I wasn’t good enough as I was to take her back.

Was I set on doing what seemed like the impossible?
Maybe.
Would I still accomplish what I set out to do?
Yes.

Maybe I looked like a fool to my sister, but she was here. She must have believed I could do it. She must see our bright future in front of us. She knew I belonged in that seat, I was an heir, and I would be alpha. I would take our pack back and I would restore things to the way they should have always been. I wasn’t a fool and I wouldn’t lie to myself. I knew I wouldn’t be able to go back and take her back as I was. I needed to be better, I needed to be stronger. Despite the voice that told me I could have run off with her the night of her ceremony, I pushed it back.

Yes, I could have left with her that night, but what would we have done?
What could I have given her?
Where would we have gone?

I would have put her in danger. I wouldn’t have been able to provide her with the things she doesn’t know needs to be provided. She deserved the world and I could do that when I had what was rightfully mine back. As soon as I got it back, I would go for her.
“Sometimes, I don’t know if it is you or I that is crazy,” Mave said as she shook her head. “But maybe we’re both crazy. You for your thoughts and me for following.”
“Mave… I—”
“Don’t brother. You have no regrets. You don’t second guess what you do. You are confident in your choices and you don’t ever say sorry. Don’t try and change who you are. Don’t start now,” Mave said.
“Thank you,” I said.
“Mm, you owe me,” she said.
“Do I?” I asked.
“Oh yes, you owe me big time, big brother,” she said.
“Right? My sister kept me alive, fashioned tools, and hunted. Who needs a Beta when I have you?” I asked.
“Now you mock me?” Mave asked.
I knew better than to fall for her trap. Her eyes lit up and her whole face changed as she smiled. Women weren’t allowed into roles of leadership, but no one made the rules in my pack. Only I would and my sister would have a role, she would have a title and would provide for herself.
“Am I wrong? Did you not keep me alive the last week?” I asked. My sister grumbled beneath her breath.
“That’s not very ladylike,” I said. She stuck out her tongue at me.
“You think I jest?” I asked.
“When you smirk like that, yes, yes I do,” Mave said.
“I don’t. I speak the truth sister,” I said.
“Mm-hmm,” she said.
She shook her head as she gathered my bowl. I watched her as she stood to her feet and walked toward the exit. I leaned forward as I told her to be careful on the outside. I felt helpless as I watched her leave. I hated that I had to leave everything up to her, but there’s no one I trust more.
“Wait and see if I’m being truthful since you don’t believe me!” I yelled out after her.
She lifted her hand and gave me a finger before she disappeared. I couldn’t help but laugh. My little sister was the farthest from ladylike. Now all I could do was lie in wait. I lowered myself until my head rested on the soft bed of grass.
I took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of fresh water and dirt, and exhaled. I had no fight left in me, my body relaxed as I drifted into sleep. The more I slept, the faster Max could work, and the sooner I would heal. I stared at the rushing water and listened to the rushing water as it slapped down hard against the water below.
I would regain my strength, I would heal, and when I opened my eyes again, I would feel a hundred times better. I would be a man renewed and I would be ready to face my past. My eyes fluttered as my breathing slowed. She was the only thing driving me, pushing me forward.

I’ll come for you.
Just wait for me, Princess.
