Unappealing
Adea
Loud bells tolling are going off in my head as I close the door behind me. I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t stop now. My blood is pumping in my ears, my mind is screaming for me to throw the door open and return from where I came, but my heart… my heart is telling me I need to keep going. The idea that Mave is here doesn’t make sense. I have so many questions and I need answers.
Shadows from the lanterns flickers across the walls as I head down the curved stairway. The guards are nowhere in sight and it feels as if my heart stops with every step I take. My body cries out, but I cannot be deterred. While I don’t know where she’s staying, I’m certain she cannot be far. I hold my breath as I get to the bottom of the stairway, slowing to a stop, I peer around the corner.
When I realize no one is down there, I dart as fast as I can down the hallway, toward the small bridge that will take me to another flight of stairs. I’ve never been anywhere, but the main areas, the dining hall, the doctor’s room, and the library. My fingers tremble and I have the urgent need to turn back, but I grip my nightgown and push forward.
It’s as if all of the guards have gone on break all at the same time. I don’t know if it’s my lucky night, or if I’m walking into a trap. At this point, nothing but Alpha can stop me. Nothing is greater than my thirst for knowledge in this moment, not even my fear, because yes, I am afraid. After months in this hellhole, I can no longer deny that it has had an effect on me. I am a shell of what I used to be, of who I used to be.
My footsteps slow as I walk down the hallway with stained glass windows. Moonlight filters through, colorful light spreads through the air in front of me. How can something so beautiful exist in a place so dark? I rush down the large hall and don’t hesitate to run up the first stairway I come across. My feet take me up, up, up until I’m at the top of the stairs.
My tower can be seen from the windows here. There are 2 rooms here and before I can question anything I burst through the first one. The room is empty and I grab my chest. It feels as if it will explode. I turn, stride out of the room, and head toward the second door. It’s at the end of the hall.
As I walk I notice that this hallway is covered by large red drapes. Reaching out, my fingers trail the fabric along the way. I stop when my hand bumps against something hard. I turn toward the wall and grip the drapes in my hand. Slowly, I lift it and my eyes lock on a painting.
I continue to lift the cloth until my eyes trail up the hairy legs of a monster, it’s hardened member, and a hairy chest. I gasp when I realize it’s the cross between a man and a wolf. Our kind doesn’t turn like this, we turn from human to wolf. This… this isn’t right. This… there’s something wrong with this painting.
This monster is standing on two legs. Blood coats it’s lips and when my eyes lock on the monster’s face, I cover my mouth to cover a scream. I may not recognize the face of the monster, but I recognize the eyes. Cold green eyes stare down at a woman dead on the floor. I drop the cloth as a sound comes from the door. I turn and listen intently.
My feet take me closer to the door, leaving the painting behind me. Moans filter down the hall to me and I harshly swallow the lump in my throat. I stop in front of the door, reaching out, I grasp the door handle. I take one, two breaths to steady myself. A low groan fills the air and I freeze.
I know that sound, I’ve become all too familiar with it. I know who it belongs to, but I don’t know why I’m hearing it here. Well, it’s obvious. Whoever is inside this room, is someone Alpha is taking pleasure in. Whoever is in this room, is someone with the power to distract Alpha enough not to come to my room.
For a brief second, I consider turning around and retreating as quietly as possible. There’s a few more towers I could search before sunrise. I’m searching for Mave. I’m not interested in getting in trouble for being out of my bed and out of my room. Who occupies his time, matters not, but there’s something urging me forward. Something is telling me to open the door and see who it is.
“Please,” a voice whispers. “Please let me mark you.” A threatening growl fills the room and the hair on the back of my neck is standing. “You’re mine…” a voice cries. The bed creaks and she moans erotically. The creaking stops and Alpha groans. “Please stay,” she pleads.
“Don’t be greedy. It’s unappealing,” Alpha said.
I looked around quickly and rushed toward the wall. The odds of this actually working weren’t high, but I couldn’t just wait for him to open the door and find me. Pushing the drapes aside, I push my body flush against the wall, and cover myself with the cloth. It’s soft velvet material covers my body and my feet as it lands on the floor.
Alpha shuffles around and not even a minute later, the door pushes open and he walks out of the room. I hold my breath as his footsteps grow closer, I squeeze my eyes shut as he passes me. I pray to the Goddess as his footsteps stop, the air stills, and I know I’m caught. This is it. He’s caught me.
