Held ~ Michelle Majors, Aeli

Shane laughed, and I cheered over the demons I’d vanquished for a short while. The vibrations from him tickled my belly, his smile contagious. Laying down, I held on as he pulled me down with him. His hand came up, my lashes fluttered, and my eyes rolled into the back of my scalp as his fingers ran along my scalp. His beating heart and breathing were all I could hear. I wrapped my arm around his waist. This is what I wanted. What could I do to hold onto him longer? Could I get this Shane tomorrow too? Yes, I would. He said he’d try.
“I’m still waiting.”
“Are you complaining to me about waiting?” Disbelief colored his tone, and I giggled.
“Yes, yes, I am. Any moment now, Grandpa,” I teased.
His fingers clenched a handful of hair and lightly yanked. I gasped and stared into those beautiful obsidian orbs. There was a look that matched his disbelief, and his throat bobbed as his gaze dropped to my lips. Leaning up, despite the pin pricks to my scalp, our lips met. It was sweet and slow. And I realized how right Shane was.
He did taste like home.
When we pulled apart, I opened my eyes, and we stared deeply into each other’s for a minute. His body on mine, his scent circling around me, and the fact he was still so very present. It should have been awkward, but it wasn’t. There was something similar and comforting about Shane. And maybe that made sense. He searched my gaze, and I prayed he would find whatever he was looking for. Goddess, I wanted to be everything he needed because tonight cemented what I was so afraid to admit. I wanted Shane. I wanted him with my whole heart, body, and soul. Everything a future together entailed. I wanted it all.
“My Beta.”
“What about him?” I rasped. My finger drew circles into the flesh of his waist.
“He’s Gabe’s mate.”
My finger froze, and then I laughed.
“That’s hopeful thinking. Now stop joking. Who’s his mate?”
Silence. The longer it stretched, the more I realized he wasn’t joking. I shook my head. Sitting up, my brain ran a mile a minute as I tried to pick up the pieces and put them together. No matter how much I tried to make them fit, I couldn’t see it. Odis being Gabe’s mate didn’t make sense. He was… the complete opposite of my best friend. Okay, that wasn’t fair. I didn’t really know him, but… there was never a wrinkle in his suit. He was dead serious every time I’d seen him, and he didn’t look like he knew how to have fun. But who was I to judge? Maybe the Moon Goddess had something in mind for the two of them?
“Odis?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“Are you su—”
A knock at the door cut me off, and he growled. Catching me off guard, causing everything to clench in that delicious way my body did just for him. Knuckles rapped against the door, but Shane stayed right where he was. He didn’t rush to get up or asked who it was. He knew. Shaking his head, he lifted his arms up and behind his head. Stretching his abdomen, flexing his arms—Goddess.
“You’re not supposed to be here.” He grunted, and I glanced at the door before looking back at him.
“Who?” I whispered.
“You’re not supposed to kidnap people,” Mavy’s voice sassed from the other side of the door. I smiled at her retort before my eyes widened and my cheeks flushed. I’ve never been in this situation, but a friend just caught me in bed with her brother and I just might die of embarrassment.
“Go away, Mavelin.” His chest rose and fell. Shane was irritated. And not because of me. I’d giggle if I wasn’t swimming in shame.
“Did you just use my government name? Ugh. That’s not going to work. I will not be distracted, brother. Adea, are you okay?” Her voice was filled with concern and I felt bad. I had been playing with Shane for who knows how long, and I hadn’t let her know I was here.
“She’s fine,” Shane answered.
“Adea? Are you okay?”
“I said, she’s fine.” He was grumbling, and it was cute.
“Is she? Because I haven’t heard her,” Mavy snapped.
“I’m okay,” I squeaked.
There was silence.
“You’ve heard her. Now leave.”
The door flew open, and she barged in. She wore loose pajama pants and a matching shirt. Her hair was in a ponytail as she rushed to the edge of the bed. Shane jumped up and covered me. He pulled me into his lap, his arms wrapped around me protectively. Mavy looked me up and down. Her eyes froze on my neck, but she nodded then continued.
“I already told you she was okay. I need you to leave,” Shane replied gruffly.
“I needed to hear it from her,” Mavy huffed.
“You know you’re not supposed to be in here.”
“Now that I’ve checked for myself, I’ll leave.”
“Good. You can see her in the morning. Go bother someone else.” His voice was softer now.
“Let’s reschedule our sleepover,” she suggested.
“Sounds good.” I nodded despite the low rumble in Shane’s chest.
“Fill me in how this happened when my idiot brother isn’t listening.”
“Okay,” I laughed.
“Let me know if you need me.” She rolled her eyes, and I nodded before she turned on her heel and walked out the door. Slamming it before she headed down the hall. I don’t look at him. His chest against my back, his warmth surrounds me. I’m feeling shy and have no reason to. I squeal as he flips me around to face him before he falls back on his side, taking me with him. He kisses my forehead, my nose, and my lips. I was exactly where I wanted to be.
“You got your answer. Now you’ll spend the rest of the night doing my bidding.”
“Your bidding, huh?” I giggled.
“Yes.”
“And what’s that?” I yawned as I burrowed as deep into his embrace as possible.
His hands ran down my back over and over again. My eyes grew heavy, my breathing slowed, and closed as fingers moved my hair out of my face.
“Staying.”
And that’s exactly what I did.
