Strong

Shane

Was she eating?
Was she warm?
Was he…

I couldn’t bring myself to say, nor think the words. I closed my eyes and my breaths came out haggard. I couldn’t do this right now. If I thought about what she was doing, what she could be going through right now, I don’t think I could stop myself from turning around and back for her. I couldn’t do that right now. The reasoning for what I was doing was enough to keep me grounded. I was weak. I knew it, my sister knew it, my wolf knew it. There was nothing I could do for her right now, not as I am. I needed more, I needed power, I needed numbers if I wanted to take her back. Still, it wrecked me, it tore me up. How could I continue on like normal when I had no idea what she was going through? Despite the smell that wafted through the air and teased me, my stomach churned. How could I eat when I didn’t know if she was?
“You must eat brother,” Mave said.
I lifted my chin, my eyes setting on my sister as she stared back at me. My little sister could see right through me. She knew I was struggling. We still hadn’t talked much and I knew we would have to soon. Would she hate me for taking her from the only place she called home? Would she understand why we had to go back?
“You’ll be useless, injured, and weak if you don’t brother. You know you can’t be any of those things if we are to survive. I need you to eat. If you want to do what you’ve set out to do, you’ll need to be strong. To do that… you’ll need to eat,” Mave said.
I swallowed the large dry lump in my throat as I lowered my eyes to the bowl. The carrots and meat bobbed in encouragement. I lifted the bowl to my lips and took a sip. The liquid seared my lips and burned my tongue. It didn’t deter me, the soup melted my insides. I inhaled the rest of it and ignored my sister’s hiss as she told me to take it slow.

I needed to get stronger.
I needed to heal.
I needed to get better.I needed to hurry.
She’s waiting for me.

I placed the bowl down and my sister gave me a disapproving look. I leaned back against the cold stone walls. My body was already taxed, but I couldn’t bring myself to lay down just yet. I fought against the exhaustion that threatened to drag me down. My sister was here, she’d taken care of things while I had been out, and it was time. It was time that I told her what happened, it was time I explained what I’d done, and why we had to leave.
“Mav—”
“Don’t, Shane. We don’t have time for that right now,” she said.
“For what?” I asked.
“To unwrap the fuckery that is our life. There’s too much to go over and starting with why we had to leave isn’t where this all started,” she said.
I knew that my sister was perceptive, but she was hinting at why we left home in the first place. Had she always known? Had she known the whole time what I had done? Shame and guilt welled up in my chest.
“And don’t do that either. Don’t go getting all guilty like you hold the world on those shoulders of yours. I’m not a child anymore brother and I think it’s time you realize that. There’s no need for you to feel like you must protect me anymore. We’re going back home, aren’t we?” She asked.
“Yes, we are,” I answered.
“You’re planning on challenging the alpha?” She asked.
“Yes, I am ready to take my rightful place. That seat, that crown, that pack. All of it is mine. I’ve stayed away for too long, but a child cannot challenge the alpha. I’m of age now, the only problem is that I’m weak now. I need to heal,” I said.
“Yes, you need to recuperate and get your strength back. I’m happy to hear that you aren’t content with hiding in the shadows anymore. I don’t know why we left, but I knew we wouldn’t have had their not been a dire reason. I’d follow you anywhere brother. So long as we are together, I will follow,” she said.
“Always sister. As soon as I’ve regained my strength, we’ll go back home,” I said.
“What do you plan to do when you’ve taken back what is yours?” She asked.
“Ours,” I said.
“What?” She asked.
“When I take back what is ours,” I repeated. “What’s mine is yours sister. In the past, the present, and the future. Everything that is mine belongs to you as well. I’m taking back our pack, our home, our land,” I said.
Mave’s eyes filled with tears and I smiled at her. My sister was beautiful, but not when she cried.
“Stop crying. You’re ugly when you cry,” I said. She laughed and swiped at her tears.
“I’ll show you ugly!” She said as she swung at me.
“You wouldn’t hit an injured man!” I yelped.
“I’d bet my life that I would!” She laughed as she swung again.
“After I get everything that is ours, I plan on going back for my queen,” I said.
“She isn’t yours anymore. She isn’t yours to go back for, she cannot be your Luna,” Mave said cautiously.
“But is she,” I said.
“No, Shane, she isn’t. She’s no longer back there. She’s back at his pack now, his Luna, his mate, his,” Mave said. She said it as if she needed to convince me of what I wasn’t seeing.
“It doesn’t matter what he does to her, she doesn’t belong to him,” I said.
“If he’s marked her, she is his and there’s nothing you can do to change that,” Mave said.
