Warning
Everyone was intoxicated, dancing, or high on moony. It was a drug that gives you a warm sensation, heightens your senses, and euphoria for a limited time. Hands slid up my arms and across my chest but I brushed them off. The Alpha was sitting on the elevated throne and I knew he couldn’t see us. He was being entertained by two she-wolves but Adea kept her head down as we walked by just in case. We were almost there. As long as we could get out of the dance area, we were practically free.
The smell of arousal was in the air, the lights dimmed, and sweaty bodies rubbed up against us. Adea didn’t say anything but I felt the way her hand tightened around mine. She trusted me. She knew I’d keep her safe and I wasn’t going to let her down. I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding as we made it through the bodies and out of the ballroom. We walked under the high archway and were in the hallway. The one that would lead us outside, the one that would deliver us to freedom.
There were a few people scattered about as we made our way down the hallway. I was happy that I didn’t recognize any of them. My sister wasn’t here either, which I thank the moon for. I don’t know what I would do if I found her here under a man. No, I do know. I’d kill him. I’d tear him limb from limb. Her hand was jerked back in mine but I held it tightly.
I turned to find her eyes wide with shock and fear. Behind her, another man held her other hand. She was stuck between the two of us. Behind him, was a younger version of Adea. She was pretty but was nothing compared to My Princess. This younger version of her held onto the mystery man’s arm. My gaze trailed down his arm to his hand that still held hers. I growled. I don’t care who he is. I don’t care who she is either. No one touches Adea. No one touches what’s mine. The asshole didn’t budge.
He glared back at me and growled. His eyes darted to Adea and back to me. He was muscular and strong. His green eyes glared back at me in the darkness of the hallway. It was only lit by candles and I fought the urge to squint. The bastard needed to go. He lowered his head and my eyes took in the color of his hair. Dark brown or black. Fuck. Which color it wasn’t didn’t matter. He was an Alpha or an heir. I hoped he was an heir. If he was an heir, I could avoid having to deal with any consequences. I didn’t care though. I would kill an heir if I needed to.
“Get away from her,” the man growled. I cocked my head at the warning. I don’t know who the fuck he thought he was but no one tells me what to do. Especially when it came to Adea.
“Speak for yourself. This woman is mine,” I growled back. His head snapped to Adea, his eyes narrowed at her.
“You have a boyfriend?” He asked. Adea hadn’t turned, hadn’t looked back at him. She didn’t say anything for a moment.
“Come back to me,” the young girl said behind him. “I’m the one you want, aren’t I? You aren’t here for her today. We were having a good time.”
“Quiet,” the man growled.
Now that he was distracted, I was able to look at him. My gaze ran over his shirt, it was unbuttoned and messy. His pants were firmly in place but they were crumpled. I smirked. He’d been getting dirty with this girl and now he wanted to switch to her like they were interchangeable? I don’t fucking think so. It may be hypocritical of me seeing as I was just with Evangeline, but the difference is I would burn the world to the ground for Adea. Evangeline is nothing to me, whereas with this asshole, she’s just someone he wants to possess.
“Let go of my woman. That’s the only warning you’ll get from me.” I meant every fucking word. I wanted to bash his face into the wall but I hadn’t yet. Why? Because I didn’t want to let go of the hand that was holding onto mine for dear life.
“Who are you calling your woman? She’s not yours. She’s mine,” the man seethed. “Adealine of the Clear Mountain pack belongs to me, Ethan of the Crimson pack. You’re the one touching what doesn’t belong to you. This woman belongs to me and has always belonged to me. Her body, her soul, her future belong to me.”
I couldn’t hear any more of this bullshit. What are the fucking chances that we would meet here? In the fucking hallway no less? We were almost outside, we were almost free. Was this fate? I wanted to scoff. No, it was luck. Pure luck. He’d gotten lucky but he hadn’t seen her face. He didn’t know for sure if she was Adea, he couldn’t confirm it. He just thought she was Adea.
I dropped her hand, strode up to him, and clocked him in the jaw. His head snapped back and I turned and pulled Adea into my embrace. Her head furrowed into my chest. I held the back of her head with my hand. I could feel her shake against my chest and beneath my hand. I hated that he evoked this reaction from her.
The woman behind him, the younger version of Adea, who I’m assuming is her sister Ava, cried out and rushed over to dick face. I ran from him, ran from them and Adea ran with me. Our feet carried us fast and far away from them. I felt a rush as we left them behind us. I couldn’t help but laugh when we rushed through the front door. The cold wind hit our faces and the moon shined down on us.
Now that we were free, we kept running until we couldn’t stop. If anything, she ran faster, her legs pumping below her, pushing her forward until she was by my side. I held her hand tighter as I stared at her. She was… breathtaking.
