Adea
Olivia’s words didn’t make sense and she didn’t say much more. When she did speak she talked in riddles. How could I remember someone I had never met before? She was a mystery and I couldn’t help but feel drawn to her. I’m not sure what it was. I glanced at Odis but he avoided looking at me. He was quiet and his attention remained on the plate in front of him. Olivia looked upon Odis with interest. The sound of a fist slamming on the table caused me to jump.
“I grow tired of waiting for your attention to drift my way,” Alpha growled.
My mouth dried and I dragged my gaze from Odis and Olivia and instead, focused on him. You would think that he would be at ease, or at least relaxed with Ava here, but that isn’t the case. Alpha is upset and on edge, I can feel the animosity in the air. I recognize that look in his eyes—he hungers for me. Every nerve in my body itches to run and my brain screams at me to listen. I fight the urge to avert my gaze.
“I didn’t know I was supposed to bow to your every whim,” I said.
“You should know better and I would advise against testing me today, My Queen,” Ethan warned.
Ava flinched back at the endearment. I scoffed in an attempt to brush his warning off, but couldn’t ignore the way my body tensed. I hated the fact that I had started to notice a subtle change in the way I responded to his anger. I hated that he had any type of effect on me other than to evoke my own anger. I felt like a dog being broken in. In biting my tongue, I felt as if I had bowed my head in submission. It felt as if little by little, day by day he was winning.
“I didn’t know responding honestly would be considered testing you. What have I done to anger you?” I asked.
“You are talkative today,” Alpha purred. “What don’t you do to anger me? I believe the correct question here is what have you done to please me?” Alpha asked.
“I’ve told you time and time again. I do not live to serve you, I do not live to please you, and I do not spend my days thinking of how to make you happy. What reason do you have to be angry with me? Your hostility is unwarranted. My sister is here. Aren’t you happy to have her in your pack, under your roof, by your side? I wouldn’t be surprised if the two of you spent time together the last week. I don’t see why you’re upset, especially if your needs are being taken care of,” I spat.
I ignored the sharp inhale of breath and glare from Ava. I loved how she felt it necessary to reprimand me for the conversation I was having with my partner. I thought it was ridiculous for her to be shocked with Alpha’s sick obsession with me. It felt too much like home and our childhood together. The last few years of her fighting against me because of her obsession with Ethan.
“Is that jealousy I hear?” Alpha asked.
Ava’s eyes almost bulged out of her head as Alpha ignored my words. I wondered if she thought he would put me over his thigh. I scoffed at how insane Alpha was. He disregarded the accusations and the fact that it was immoral for him to be sleeping with two sisters. Instead, he focused on that idea that I might be jealous, which I am not. I could care less who he holds affections for.
“No, that’s not jealousy—far from it. I do not care who tends to your needs, Alpha. The point of my argument is that you have no reason to be angry tonight. You have everything you could ever want. Don’t you?” I asked.
“Do I?” Alpha asked.
“What?” I asked.
“Do I have everything I want?” Alpha asked.
“I don’t see what else you could want,” I said.
Silence fell over the room as everyone waited for him to speak again. When he didn’t I sighed and turned to my sister.
“Why am I only hearing of her arrival now?” I asked.
“As I said earlier, I’ve been busy,” Ava answered.
“Too busy to answer to the Luna of this pack?” I asked. She clenched her teeth together and I smiled in satisfaction.
“I’m here to keep me company. Let’s not fight,” Ava said. She looked up at me, her brown eyes staring back at me with what I would call hope.
“Are we ready for tomorrow?” Alpha asked.
He turned to look at Odis and his Beta nodded. Putting down his fork, he brought the cloth to his mouth, and cleared his throat before he faced Alpha. Olivia was awfully quiet, but she continued eating. She seemed bored with this situation and didn’t care about the conversation.
“We are. Everything is good to go. I’ll check in with the dressmaker to ensure her dress is ready. I’ve already chosen the warriors that will guard automobile. It has been cleaned and is ready for travel,” Beta Odis said.
“Excellent. Olivia will be attending as well. Be sure to see that she accompanies you,” Alpha said.
“I’ll see to it,” Odis said. He didn’t look at her, but nodded.
“How many warriors have you enlisted for tomorrow’s excursion?” Alpha asked.
“Twenty,” Odis answered.
“Cut it down to ten,” Alpha said.
“I don’t think that would be wise,” Odis started.
“I’ll decide what’s wise. Cut it down to ten. I think you forget that we are taking Olivia,” Alpha said.
“Yes, Alpha,” Odis said.
“Olivia is the equivalent of ten men,” Alpha said.
“Taking less men will make us look weak,” Odis said.
“On the contrary, it’ll make us look confident. It doesn’t matter what they think. What matters is that we aren’t afraid, nor are we weak. Olivia will do her job, won’t you?” Alpha asked. She lifted her chin and turned to look at Ethan. He smiled at her, his eyes daring her to disagree.
“Yes, Alpha,” Olivia answered.
