Adea
The carriage door opened and got to his feet, the carriage was so large he could stand straight. He stepped out and down the stairs, only stopping to turn around and look at me. I was expected to get up and follow him out. Imagine if I fell to the floor, kicking and screaming. The look on his face would have been priceless. Sadly, I was raised for these sorts of events. I couldn’t do that even if I wanted to. I took a deep breath of air and got to my feet. I stopped in the doorway and took his outstretched hand, placing my hand atop his. I took the first step, followed by the second and the third until I was firmly on the ground. After three hours of sitting in that carriage, my backside was throbbing.
The first thing I saw was tall stone walls that made up the front of the packhouse. A large sum of warriors stood guard outside. They watched every movement, every step, every breath we made. A large man who I’m assuming is an Alpha stands a few feet away from us. He’s and older man with short black hair, kind brown eyes, and a nose that has been broken one too many times. He wears a long sleeved red shirt, a fastened black vest, and long black boots with two buckles on the side. He’s accompanied by a second large man, who I’m guessing is his Beta. This man is bald, has blue eyes, and a thin long nose. His lips are thin and pursed firmly in a straight line.
“Alpha Ethan and his mate, welcome to the North Star pack. I hope your travels were smooth and quick,” the Beta said.
“Alpha Rich, Beta Lockhart. I appreciate you welcoming us into your territory,” Alpha greeted.
“The pleasure is ours. I hope you’ll excuse my mate, she is ill and could not make it,” Alpha Rich said.
“I ask the Moon Goddess for her quick recovery,” Alpha said. He gripped my hand and I nodded.
“Beta,” Beta Lockhart greeted.
“Beta Lockhart,” Odis greeted.
“If you’ll follow me,” Beta Lockhart said. He turned on his heel, Alpha Rich and Alpha lead the way and I followed. Beta Odis followed from behind, watching our back.
“Are we the last to arrive?” Alpha asked.
“Yes, but don’t worry, we haven’t waited long,” Alpha Rich answered.
The sounds of my heels clacked against the floors as we walked through a set of large double doors made of wood and metal. The inside of the packhouse was lit up by lanterns placed in between large stone pillars. Above the pillars were long stone arches that led so high up it was dark. I was surprised by how grand it was.
“Has something happened?” Alpha asked.
“If this meeting hadn’t been planned, I would have thought that was the theme of the night,” Alpha Rich chuckled.
“This meeting takes place outside of the designated time, so I, and the other alpha’s can only assume that something has happened,” Alpha said.
“True, very true,” Alpha Rich said.
“Something has happened, but we will discuss it inside. I’ve told everyone the same thing to help with having to explain multiple times. We are almost there,” Beta Lockhart explained as we walked.
We followed the lanterns as the floor dipped and curved. Large black framed floor-to-ceiling windows and green vines adorned the walls. I half expected Alpha to growl or call the Beta insolent, but was surprised when he didn’t.
The hall, if that’s what it could be called, was still large, but I noticed the further we walked, the smaller it seemed to get. A large set of doors came into view and I attempted to calm my beating heart for what lay just beyond them.
Alpha had briefed me on the way here of what I was and wasn’t permitted to do. I wasn’t allowed to speak unless permitted. He had no intentions of permitting me to talk to anyone, but him. I was only allowed to answer his questions. I was to hold my chin high, but to avoid eye contact with everyone.
I was forbidden from giving him lip. Any hint of attitude or unacceptable behavior would result in discipline. I was obviously not to speak to the new alpha, but he felt the need to remind me. I was allowed to nod and sit pretty like the pretty package that I was. He reminded me of my role, my rank, and my future with him. There was no one else in the world for me and there was no one around the Alpha Table there for me.
I had no intentions of listening or disobeying. It had been so long since I had left his territory, his packhouse, the grounds that I was just trying to take everything in. A part of me still wished I was back in that room, on the bed, hidden beneath the blanket. I wanted to slap myself for it, but I still felt it. I was unsure, uncertain of things outside of the pack.
The other part was happy to be forced to come. I was thankful that he had to bring me. I was relieved that he had to bring a partner and that person was me. I thought with Ava’s presence that she might come along, but she didn’t. This was the one time, I wanted to be by Alpha’s side. This was the one perk I would have, the possibility of seeing him here was reason enough.
I just wanted to know if it was true, I wanted to know if he’d done what he set out to do, I wanted to know that he was healed. I needed to know that he was alive and strong. I needed to look upon his face more than I needed the air I breathed. Tears blurred my vision and I took deep breaths to steady myself. I willed them to go away and by the time we slowed to a stop in front of the doors, they had dried up. My heart hammered in my chest, my blood pumped in my ears, and I held my breath as the doors opened.
