“Is there a reason for your visit, or are we going to spend the whole day in my bed chambers?” I teased.
“No, that won’t be happening,” Odis’ face flushed red at the obvious meaning behind my jest. He cleared his throat and I enjoyed watching him as he tried to get his thoughts in order.
“I am first to escort you to brunch,” Odis said.
“If there’s a first, I’m assuming there are more items on the schedule?” I asked.
“Yes, Luna,” Odis said with a bow.
“Do I get to change or must we leave now?” I inquired.
“Alpha told me it was of utmost importance that I take you as you are,” Odis said.
“So naked then?” I asked.
Odis held my gaze. I was thankful that his eyes did not trail over my body. I took a deep breath. That’s fine. If that is what Ethan wants than that is what Ethan is going to get. I won’t let him shake me.
“How disappointing,” I huffed. “I think we would have had much more fun had we stayed in my bedchambers the duration of the day.”
Odis bowed his head, turned from me and practically ran from my room. My laugh bounced off the walls as I followed him out into the hall. Other than him, I haven’t had any close friends. When Odis made it to the ground floor he pivoted and offered me his hand. I stared at it a moment before looking up into his face.
Odis’ eyes were kind and when I saw no ill intent in them I took his hand. It was firm, but I was surprised to find it kind. When my feet touched the floor he dropped my hand. I held my chin high and followed after him, making sure to stay by his side and not behind him.
We passed the same halls I recognized from yesterday. I couldn’t help but stare out of the windows as we walked. The sun poured through them, lighting up the room and our way. We crossed over one of the bridges that led across to another hall. Eventually we came to a stop in front of a large stone archway.
Odis motioned for me to walk into the room. I clasped my hands in front of me and took my first step into the room. Looking around the dining-hall the first thing I noticed were the glass-stained windows, the view consisted of trees and mountains in the far off distance. Three large candle beams hung from the ceiling over a large wooden table with maroon velvet dining chairs with intricate designs on the top chair. Servants stood around the room, they didn’t look my way, their eyes remained forward.
As much as I wanted to ignore the man seated at the head of the table his presence demanded my attention. A tan robe hung loosely from his body. His lower half hidden from view and his naked torso flexed under my stare. Ethan’s dark lush hair had been brushed and styled to the side. I hated how his eyes filled with amusement as I made my way into the dining-hall.
Odis followed behind me. Despite being in a room with two men and servants I’d never felt more alone. It reminded me of the night of my coming of age celebration, but I pushed thoughts of that night aside. I came to a stop opposite Ethan and dipped my chin. He shook his head but said nothing as Odis pulled out my seat for me and I dropped into it. Odis walked to the edge of the table and sat between the two of us.
“Good morning, my queen. I trust you slept well?”
Ethan’s voice was low and husky. I didn’t want to talk about last night and I didn’t want to encourage him. I wasn’t ready to face what had happened last night, nor was I ready to deal with his teasing. Although I had enjoyed meeting Odis this morning, I hadn’t had breakfast yet and was in no mood to deal with Ethan. I opted for silence and nodded my head. I could feel his eyes on me as I looked anywhere but at him.
“Are you in pain?” Ethan asked.
Of course I was in pain, but I wasn’t about to admit that now. I was exhausted; mentally and physically. My body gave way to the torment I went through the last few days and my mind was drained from the mental war I waged against. I hated how he pretended to care about me. The memory of his kindness last night resurfaced and irritated me. I hated how he pretended to care about me. Would my being in pain matter? Would it do anything to deter him from touching me again? I was no fool. I couldn’t even pretend to believe that that was a possibility. Ignoring everything I had been taught I leaned back and slumped in my seat.
“Are you still pretending to care?” I spat.
Ethan blinked, his brow furrowed with frustration, and the vein in his temple spasmed. He let out a sigh of defeat and I scoffed. He had the audacity to play the victim here. Him! As if I called him to sit at this table and forced him to deal with me. His eyes warned me that he would only take so much, but would could he do to me that he hadn’t done already? Ethan turned from me and looked at Beta Odis.
“Do you have anything to report, Beta?” Ethan asked.
“No, Alpha. The foe has not been seen, but the warriors are scouring the area. They lost his scent at the Red River. We are doing everything we can to find a lead,” Odis said. My ears perked up at this.
“Who are you searching for? A criminal?” I asked.
“We’re on the hunt for a thief,” Ethan murmured.
“A thief?”
“Yes. Someone has taken something from me, but I assure you, he will be found and dealt with,” Ethan promised.
