Heart

Adea
I planned this brunch, expecting to have an awkward conversation with Mavy, and then not have to do it again. But after the night I’ve had with Shane, I was hoping to get some information on him from his sister. When Mavy said she had an idea, I didn’t think she’d invite me for a sleepover. I’ve never had close girlfriends, so I don’t know what’s normal.
My jaw was on the table and my mind ran wild. I barely know her and she’s asking me to sleep over? Of course, I want to sleep over. My reasons are not based on friendship and I feel a little guilty. I know I shouldn’t, but I had hoped Shane may have told her about me, but now I see he hasn’t. Otherwise she would have said something, right? She is his sister and if things had gone the way they were supposed to when you found your mate, I would be trying to get close to her. I’d want her to like me. I picked my jaw off the table and resigned myself to what I knew I wanted, even if it was ludicrous.
“Your brother won’t mind an uninvited guest in his pack house?” I asked, careful to sound unbothered.
“Psh. He won’t care so long as I’m home. Also, you aren’t uninvited. I invited you, so don’t worry. He won’t bite,” she said as she waved me off.
“I don’t know…” I trailed off. Shane definitely bites.

But I like it.

The idea of catching him off guard when he sees me in his pack house actually makes me giddy. Even though I see him getting angry instead of being excited to see me. He’s done enough to piss me off. I wonder how he’d act if I ignored him? Pretended I didn’t know him. Like he didn’t fuck me in my apartment last night, or in the club.
“Before you think I’m trying to kidnap you, we live just outside of town. Literally right outside. Let your bestie know where you’re going to be. You can always leave whenever you want, but I doubt you’ll want to. I’m so fun to be around,” she joked.
“Okay, okay. I wasn’t thinking you were going to kidnap me, but thanks for the reassurance,” I laughed.
“Yay! We’ll have a good time and I’ll try to keep my brother away from you,” she teased.
“Do you normally have to keep your brother away from your friends?” I asked. Trying and failing to hide my emotions. She regarded me silently before smiling.
“No, but I think you forgot the part about me not being able to leave. Like ever. I don’t have friends… We’ve come across a lot of packs, but it isn’t easy making friends when your brother is the one killing their alpha. A warm welcome isn’t normal,” she said.
“Have you met resistance with the nearby pack?” I asked.
“No, but there has been… a few members who have been brave enough to voice their opinion,” she said carefully.
“That’s… terrible, but is the way of our kind,” I said.
“True. So is killing their children, but Shane doesn’t do that. He won’t say why he lets them go, but I know why,” she said.
“And why is that?” I asked. I knew how I sounded. I was hopeful. I wanted to grasp at any straws that could prove Shane was not like the man I’d gotten to know. I’d seen a glimpse of him, a glimpse of something kind, something sweet, and I wanted more of it. She grabbed her coffee and sipped before answering.
“He sees us,” she sighed.
“I don’t understand. I’m not for killing children, but that’s usually what happens when a new alpha takes over. They have to get rid of the rightful heirs. Otherwise they’ll grow up and could come back for what’s theirs,” I said. Using hand quotes around rightful.
“You know the law and you’re absolutely right. He spares them because deep, deep down, my brother has a heart. He just won’t admit it,” she whispers.

Is she talking about the same guy that had a belt around my neck just last night?
The same man who gave you his jacket.
The one who fucked me against a wall and left me right after?

“Mm,” I hummed. I’m stuck between believing her and thinking she has no idea who her brother is. But I also know that there are two sides to Shane, even if I’ve only glimpsed the other side of him.
“Anyway, I can come and help you pack,” she offered.
“That’s sweet, but I have plans after this,” I said.
“Well, after your date,” she said nonchalantly.
“I never said I was going on a date,” I said.
“It’s the weekend and you’re going out at night. I’m assuming it’s a date. Am I wrong?” I asked.
“No, you’re right. That’s why I was surprised,” I laughed nervously.
“I can send a driver to pick you up after,” she said.
“That’s not necessary. I can drive,” I said.
“Of course it is. Just pack up and text me when you want the driver to come,” she said.
“Okay, but I’ll be late,” I said.
“That’s totally fine. Odis doesn’t mind. He’s really nice, and he’s actually been wanting to get out. Poor Beta doesn’t get to go out much because my brother works all the time,” she said.
I groan internally because I’ve already met Odis and I know he’ll mind. He didn’t seem like the nice type. I try to come up with something I can say while she bites into another pastry. I sigh and give in.
“I’ll send you the address so you know where to send him,” I said. Not like he probably doesn’t already know where I live.
“Deal,” she said lightly.
We talked about the pack house and what we could do tonight. Before I knew it, it was time to go. She was surprised she hadn’t been found yet, but made me promise we’d talk boys tonight. I waved her off as she rushed to her car.
