Nothing
Shane
The new few hours consisted of reviewing the offerings from the Lord’s in attendance and assuring them they would be compensated for it. I always thought about claiming my birthright, but I never thought of what kind of Alpha I wanted to be. I demanded loyalty and obedience, but I didn’t want the people to think they had to pay me in order to be safe in their homes. That didn’t sit right with me.
Had I just killed my father in cold blood?
Yes. Had I just killed his ranked leaders as they mourned over him?
Yes.
Would killing other ranked members give me pause?
No.
They were men who were in charge over the territory and pack members.
They worked under me and carried out my orders.
The men who held those stations… must be loyal.
Even though I was determined to rule with an iron fist… I didn’t want my people to fear for their safety.
“Is there anything my brother needs for the Alpha’s Table?” Beta Mave asked, cutting through my thoughts.
Good question.
“The other times the Alpha has left to attend the Alpha’s Meetings, he had to take his Luna. Seeing as the Luna was… disposed… he took someone else. Since Alpha Shane has not found his mate, he would need to take his Beta and his Gamma,” Gamma Trent answered. “I would also advise you take your strongest warriors.”
“Do I not look capable of protecting myself?” I asked. Trent looked toward Mave before bowing his head.
“No, Alpha. That is not what I meant. You don’t know what the Alpha’s will think or how they will react. You’ll be facing the rest of the Alpha’s in the country. I think it would be… a wise decision to make sure you go prepared for anything. It’s better to be safe… rather than sorry,” Gamma Trent said.
“We shall see to that after I see to the other Lords. I need the next Lord to step forward. The sooner we finish here, the sooner we meet with the other Deltas, and the sooner we get everything into their rightful place,” I said.
I hadn’t missed what Trent said about the Luna. If she was my mom, she would be in indescribable pain right now. I would need to figure out where she was. I linked Mave to find out after the meeting. If I counted right, there were still about ten Lords that needed to present their offerings.
Time seemed to slow as I thanked each Lord, one by one for their offering. I would put Trent in charge of ensuring they received payment. When all the Lords had finally presented their offerings, I almost thanked the Goddess. I dismissed them and jumped to my feet.
“Let’s meet with those Deltas,” I said.
“Yes, Alpha,” Trent said.
He turned to the warriors beside him and assigned a few of them to cleaning up the mess around the throne. I walked down to where they stood and headed toward the door. He had a few of them come forward and follow us out. I overheard him telling them assign them to protecting me until things had calmed down.
After going to each section and meeting with one Delta at a time, we only had to kill and replace one. A lot better than I had expected. I was ready to replace all four of them. By the time we were done it was time for dinner. It was an usual feeling I felt as I watched people trip over themselves to serve me, bow when the saw me, and wait. on my every command. It would take some getting used to, but what I would never get used to was the empty seat at my side.
I longed for her.
It was an odd feeling. We were no longer running from anyone, nor were we hiding. That night when I sat in the study with my sister. She asked me who I had in mind for Beta. She couldn’t think of anyone here that I was close to.
“Back at Clear Mountain pack, I had a friend who worked the fields. I would like to bring him here and name him as my Beta,” I said.
“You would make Devin your Beta?” Mave asked.
“Yes,” I laughed.
“He didn’t take anything, but women seriously,” she said.
“He was never given the chance. I would like to give that to him. I would like to keep trusted people close,” I said.
“I wasn’t doubting your choice.. It was hard to see him as Beta of any pack,” Mave teased.
“I know what you mean,” I chuckled. “This is odd, isn’t it?” I asked.
“Yes,” Mave nodded.
“I can’t believe I reclaimed what was ours so easily…” I trailed off.
“I know. I was expecting it to be much harder. Just two weeks ago, we were slaves. It’s hard to believe that I’m not dreaming,” Mave said.
We sat in silence as we read through our father’s notes and records. There was a lot to do, a lot to learn. We stayed up for hours until we called it quits.
The new few days went by in a blur of decisions, killings, and changes. I was doing what I needed to do to prepare this place for her. All I wanted was to rush to her and take her home, take her back. I had the feeling it wouldn’t be that easy, but I didn’t care. No matter what it took, I would take her back.
After a few nights of reading in my office, I found a list of names. The previous Alpha’s meetings had been recorded along with the current treaties and alliances we held with the other Alphas. Alpha Ethan of Crimson Moon was one of the Alpha’s who held a seat.
Trent’s earlier words about how Alpha’s bring their Luna’s to the meetings flowed through my mind. The thought of her holding that title burned me up from the inside. I was excited at the thought of seeing her, at the opportunity of taking her back for myself.
Nothing would stop me from taking her back.
