Adea
“What has this thief stolen to warrant such action?” I asked.
“Something of mine,” Ethan growled.
Fear filled my mind and my body tensed. I swallowed and prayed it wasn’t who I thought it was. The idea that they had a search party looking for him, hunting him scared me. Ethan’s angered confirmed it and my heart hoped they never found him. My mind took account that he was injured and knew it was likely that they would find him soon.
Two male servants came through a side door with trays of food in hand. They both came to a stop, one by me, the other by Odis. Ethan’s plate was empty in front of him. He had already eaten. I wanted for him to get up and leave soon, but I knew better than to hope. The food was placed one by one in front of me. A platter of boiled eggs, bread, and a variety of fruits from blackberries, apples, and oranges. After he placed the juice down he bowed, withdrew from my side, and left the room. The two of us ate in silence and I prayed this time with Ethan went quickly.
Ethan waved his hand in the air and one of the servants—a blonde haired woman—ran forward. I watched more nervous than I would like to admit as she placed a flat box made of leather down on the table beside Ethan. She fumbled with the lock and opened it for him. His finger trailed over the cigars before he stopped on one and took it out. He slid it under his nose as he inhaled deeply. The woman lit a match and held it with shaking hands. Ethan put the cigar in his mouth and she brought the match up to the edge. He inhaled it and when it lit the woman withdrew her hands as if she’d been burned.
“I didn’t know you smoked,” I said.
“Now you do,” Ethan huffed.
Smoke billowed from his nose and mouth as he watched me spear a blackberry and place it in my mouth. Odis ate in silence as Ethan watched my every move from his seat. When I placed my fork down on the table a fog of smoke came up and around him. The look in his eyes caused goosebumps to break out all over my body. My mouth dried up as I recognized the way he looked at me.
“Come here,” Ethan demanded.
Ethan’s eyes glazed over and Odis placed his fork on the table. He lifted the cloth to his mouth before he stood. He bowed to me and then turned to Ethan. He didn’t even look at him but he did jerk his head toward the door, a signal for Odis to take his leave. I wanted to grab hold of him and beg him to stay. I wanted him to do his duty as Beta and protect me, but I knew his protection didn’t cover me when Ethan was involved. When Odis closed the door behind him my attention went back to Ethan.
“Don’t make me repeat myself,” Ethan said
Nervously I bit down on my lip as an internal war waged. I didn’t want to go anywhere near him, matter of fact I was more than comfortable where I was. I sat away from him, far away from him. The last thing I wanted to do was close the distance. I knew if I stayed here a second longer he would lose it. As much as I knew it would make things easier if I went to him, my stubbornness won and I disobeyed him.
“Here I thought things would be easier now after last night,” Ethan sighed.
“You thought wrong,” I stated.
“Adealine,” Ethan growled.
“Alpha,” I hissed back.
Ethan jumped to his feet, his chair falling to the floor behind him. Out of the corner of my eye I saw as a few of the servants flinched. I wasn’t surprised to find his own people afraid of him. I wonder how often he lost his temper here. The urge to be the cause of it was my life’s mission. If I had no say in my body and no voice here, I would have something even if it meant I made things worse for me.
Ethan placed the cigar between his lips and took long strides around the table. In less time than I thought it would take him he was by my side. My chair jerked to the side, I closed my mouth keeping the scream from escaping. I was forced to stare up at him, but I held my chin high and glared at him.
He put the cigar out on one of my plates, leaned down, and placed both hands on my arm rests. His body close, so close I could feel his warmth. My body was flush against the chair as he lowered his head to the side of my face. He turned and ran his nose down my neck. My shaky breath giving away exactly how he made me feel. I gasped as he ran his went tongue up to my cheek.
“Haven’t you had your fill?” I asked.
“Never,” Ethan drawled.
“Will my opinion ever matter?” I asked.
“N—”
There was a knock on the wall and I fought the urge to sigh in relief. Ethan barked for whoever it was to state their business. Beta Odis walked in and bowed his head. His eyes remained on the ground as Ethan seethed.
“You dare?” Ethan growled.
“Apologies, Alpha.”
“What is it?” Ethan demanded.
“I came to escort the Luna to her next appointment,” Odis said.
“It couldn’t wait?!” Ethan growled. His claws dug into the armrests.
“No, Alpha. It’s of great importance,” Odis answered.
“What is so important Beta?” Ethan asked.
“The appointment is with the seamster. We must keep it or forfeit having her dress measured. We’ve already put a rush on it for the meeting tomorrow,” Odis said.
Ethan straightened his back, his hardness straining against his pants. I held my breath as I waited for his next words. He ran his hand through his hair as he stared down at me as he weighed his options. He let out an irritated grunt and moved out of the way.
“Go.”
