Adea
No one moved, no one so much as flinched. It was as if someone dropping dead was nothing out of the ordinary I looked around the room, with a false sense of hope, praying that one of these men were normal. They were so used to bloodshed that when death stopped by during a meeting that was meant to be peaceful, not one of the men batted an eye. The women by their sides weren’t as unaffected, but remained quiet. Some stared at the table and others refused to look down at the man bleeding out on the ground. My attention was dragged back to Alpha.
It was when he felt my eyes on him, that he moved, he reached down and pulled the dagger from the Beta’s head. I shuttered at the sound it made and my mate across the table noticed. I wanted to tell Alpha that what he’d done was unnecessary. I wanted to tell him he couldn’t just kill people. This man was my father’s Beta, he had stepped in for him, and he hadn’t thought twice about killing him. He hadn’t killed an alpha, but had killed a representative who stood in an alpha’s place. Despite wanting to say these things, I said none of them. I remained still, I remained silent.
“At what point in time did this man think he could put his filthy hands on my Luna? I shouldn’t have to say this, but for those who might not know their place, don’t fucking touch what’s mine,” Alpha warned. I gulped as he held his gaze from across the table.
“Something that needn’t be explained. The Beta miscalculated and forgot himself. It doesn’t matter how close he was to your mate before she became your Luna. She is your mate and Queen. It was his misstep, one that he won’t be able to learn from, unfortunately. Many here would have done the same,” a man said.
“I’m glad we see eye to eye, but then again, we usually do,” Alpha said. The man nodded and smiled.
“Let’s go, My Queen,” Alpha said.
He turned slightly toward me and offered his outstretched hand and I grabbed it without hesitation. I looked up at him, but he wasn’t focused on me, he was staring out across the table. When I stood on my feet, I averted my eyes and bowed my head slightly. Almost everyone at the table returned the gesture before Alpha pulled me toward the door. I knew I shouldn’t, but my heart wouldn’t listen, and so my body didn’t either. I turned and glanced over my shoulder one more time at my mate before my back was turned completely. It was like a sip of fresh air before I faced the door. With each step I took, my feet grew heavier the farther I got from him. Obsidian eyes followed me out. Beta Odis stood up and I heard him thank Alpha Rich once more before he turned and ensued after us. Alpha was silent by my side, but I didn’t care. I preferred the silence over his attention. When we were outside and in front of the carriages, Alpha spoke.
“Did you do as I asked?” Alpha asked.
“Yes, Alpha. It is done,” Beta Odis answered.
“Excellent,” Alpha said.
He seemed on edge, his body rigid, and when I looked at him, I noticed his eyes locked on the second carriage. The sound of footsteps behind me alerted us to someone. I turned and found a woman with silver hair and lavender eyes. She glanced at me, a small smile pulled at the corner of her lip, and walked past me.
“Watch her,” Alpha said.
“It would be my pleasure,” she said.
I watched her as she walked to the second carriage without another word. Alpha stared after her until the door closed behind her. Questions ran through my mind about who they spoke about. Beta Odis opened our door and I was pulled forward and into the carriage. He pulled me down beside him as Odis closed the door. I didn’t know what to say, so I said nothing .We jerked forward and just like that, we were off. As much as I wanted to read the letter, I I couldn’t, not with him here. I wouldn’t be able to so much as touch it until we returned and I was safe in my room. His arm slid around my waist and he pulled me close. I ignored his hard body as it pressed against mine and stared out the window.
“How do you feel? Now that you’ve seen him?” Alpha asked. I pretended I didn’t hear him and looked out the window. His anger grew with every word.
“Were you filled with hope when you saw him, or did you feel anger seeing him there? Did you look at him? Did you want to run to him and tell him everything I’ve done? Did you want him to save you? Did you think that he would? Let me tell you something, My Queen,” he spat. “He wouldn’t have done a damn thing for you if you had begged him for help. Whatever notions you have in that pretty head of yours about him climbing the castle walls and saving you, you can forget them. He won’t be coming for you. Why? Because you’re mine, Adealine, mine,” Alpha growled. His grip around my waist tightened and I knew that he was already lost to his thoughts. Nothing I said would appease him, or calm him down. Nothing I said would make this better.
“I did nothing wrong. I followed the rules,” I said.
I knew it was pointless, but I couldn’t help but at least speak the truth. I hadn’t done anything. He was letting his jealousy rule him and I would be the one to suffer for it. He couldn’t wait until we got back? Why did he have to do this here in the carriage? The space was smaller and I was reminded that there was nowhere to run.
There was no escape for me.
