Please
The voice on the other side of the door belonged to my father. What was I going to do? What could I do? Goddess. The body on the other side of the door slammed against the door. My bolt was holding strong but I knew it wouldn’t last for long. The sound quickened and I knew two people were taking turns throwing themselves against the door.
“You can still get out,” I whispered. “Even if you had to climb down, they wouldn’t be able to get you! You’d be gone by the time they got down.”
“They would be able to scent me and for all we know, they may already be set up downstairs,” Shane murmured. He took a step close and as much as I wanted to run, I stayed still. The tears streamed down my cheek, the sound of the door splintered, and Shane reached out to touch me. Sparks spread across my cheek as we made contact. I gasped as my eyes widened. Shane seemed unaffected as his thumb ran over my bottom lip.
“Shane, did you know?” I asked.
“Know what?” He asked, his voice was low with a tinge of pain.
“That we-”
“Does it matter what we are?” Shane asked.
My brows furrowed in confusion. “What do you mean?” I asked
“Does it only matter what we are because the Goddess deemed it so?”
“I don’t know what you…” My words died in my throat as I saw a flash of something in his gaze. It was something I didn’t recognize. It was a look I’d never seen before.
“I’ve known from the first day that I saw you that you were special,” Shane said. My chest expanded as I choked on emotion that wracked my body. “It doesn’t matter what anyone tells me. It doesn’t matter who tries to dictate my life. Whether you were or weren’t destined for me, you were mine because I chose you.” I bit my lip as tears blurred my vision. “Do you hear me, Adea?” Shane asked. His finger lifted my chin and I nodded as tears dripped from my chin.
“Yes,” I breathed. “I’m yours.”
I was stuck between laughing and crying. I’ve been wanting to find my mate, I’d once hoped I would be able to see him before leaving but never would I have thought that he was in front of me all along. How could I not have known? Had the Goddess blessed me this whole time? How had I not noticed? The door splintered behind me and I knew they would break through it any moment now. I closed the distance between me and my mate. I wrapped my arms gently around his hips. I buried my face in his chest and our mate bond came alive under our touch. Why hadn’t I felt it earlier? I pushed that thought from my mind.
The door cracked behind us but I didn’t move. Shane wrapped his arms around me and held me close. A threatening growl vibrated in his chest and the room filled with warriors. My father’s men were here.
“On your knees,” Father growled.
I fell to my knees and so did the other men in my room. I could barely lift my chin to glare at him. I’d found my mate. The Goddess’s gift was sacred. Not even my father could come between us now. Shane was still standing. He grunted from the combination of his wounds and my father’s alpha command.
“Submit, pup. You’re nothing but a child.”
“I’m—”
“Submit!” Father roared.
Shane dropped to his knees but kept his eyes on my father. He reached over and gripped my hand in his. I squeezed his back as my father walked closer.
“Didn’t I tell you, Daddy? I was right! She has a boyfriend and I had a suspicion he’s been visiting her in her room,” Ava said.
She sounded giddy. She was happy that I’d been caught. She was happy that Father had found out. At this moment, I truly hated my sister for the first time in my life. His feet stopped just beside me. Shane grunted as Father’s foot connected with his chest. He fell back and I cried as I turned to him.
“You will stay out of this!” Father yelled.
“He’s my mate! He’s my mate,” I cried. I said the words, the only words that could save Shane at this point. Tears and snots dripped and hung from my face and chin. I called on every bit of strength I had and raised my chin. I looked up at my father and held his gaze. I needed him to know that I spoke the truth. He glared down his nose at me uncaring, unflinching at the revelation.
“She’s lying!” Ava seethed. “She’s been with him for weeks, months, years! The odds that they are mates are slim. We’ve caught him in her room, he needs to be executed!” Ava shouted.
“No!” I cried out.
“SILENCE!” Father yelled. “I did not give you permission to speak.”
“Please,” I begged.
My father didn’t even look at me. I followed his gaze. His attention was focused on Shane. He turned to me and before I knew what was happening, I cried out as his boot connected with my stomach. All of the air in my lungs was expunged and I was left gasping for air as I keeled over. My head pressed against the cold stone floor as I forced air into my lungs. Kick after kick landed and stars danced across my vision. I blinked and the pain was gone. I couldn’t feel anything but warmth as it engulfed me. It wasn’t until I blinked the stars away that I realized my face was still on the floor and Shane was laying on top of me. I sobbed as tears fell from my cheeks. Shane was protecting me with his whip-torn back. I cried for my father to stop as blood dripped to the floor.
“Please, please, please,” I begged. “Please, father. Please,” I cried. He didn’t stop, I felt Shane’s body push against me with every stomp that landed on his back. I gripped his arm and tried to push him off. “It’s okay, please. It’s okay. Get off of me Shane. Get off, please. Please, please.”
He didn’t listen. He stayed on top of me until my father’s anger subsided. It wasn’t a short amount of time. I cried out under Shane as my father landed blow after blow on my mate’s back, head, and arms. Only when he stopped did Shane’s body slump against mine before rolling off of me.
“Shane,” I cried. “My love, please.”
