Take you
This was his sister Mavy. I’ve heard stories about her, but we’d never had the chance to meet. She stayed at home and when he wasn’t working he was either with me or with her. I’ve always wanted to meet her. This wasn’t what I expected.
“You don’t belong here. Why are you here?” She hissed.
“I came for Shane. I need to—”
“I don’t care what you need to do. Don’t you know you’re putting him at risk by being here? You could have been seen! I knew the moment I saw you who you were and your connection to my brother. You’re the reason he’s been gone every night, aren’t you?”
I don’t deny it. I nod.
“Have you no shame? You’ve come here to find him in broad daylight!” She screamed. “It’s only a matter of time before someone goes and fetches a Delta!”
“I had no choice. I needed to warn him,” I pleaded.
“Warn him of what? Whatever it is couldn’t have warranted you putting your relationship to the entire pack!” Her eyes widened and for a second there was fear in her eyes for her brother.
“My sister is suspicious. Someone saw him outside of the castle.”
“That shouldn’t be a problem. He works there.”
“It was before sunrise.”
“FUCK! Fucking hell, Shane. What is it about you that has him like this? I’ve never seen him like this. My brother is the most cautious person I know, you… you will be his undoing. Why can’t you let him go?” She asked.
It’s like all of the air is sucked out of the room. My heart breaks at the thought of never seeing him again. Even though her words register and I know she fears for his life I can’t. I just can’t. It’s only ever been him and the thought of losing this precious time with him hurts more than anything I’ve ever been through.
“I’m sorry. I can’t do that. I can’t breathe without him,” I whisper.
“He won’t be breathing for much longer if you don’t release your grip on him.”
I swallow.
“Are you that selfish?” She asked.
“I’ve never had the chance to be selfish before, just this once, before I leave I would like to be selfish. Our time together is limited,” I whisper.
She doesn’t say anything. We stare at each other in silence. No one will deter me from Shane. Not when our time is running out.
“I won’t throw him away.”
“I don’t care about what you will or won’t do. I only care about my brother. Two weeks? Do you really think he will let you go? Do you know how much he feels for you? Either you’re blind or just dumb. Shane doesn’t plan on letting you go. He’s gone far enough to consider going back.”
“Going back? Going where?” I asked. She shook her head.
“I’m not going to tell you about our past if he hasn’t told you. He’s considering doing things he’d previously sworn off. I don’t know what’s so great about you but my brother has chosen you. He plans on taking you as his chosen mate.”
My mouth dries and my tongue feels numb, but my heart skips a beat at what she’s just shared with me. As much as I’ve wanted to think about a happily ever after with Shane, I’ve never let myself believe it. I’ve never let myself really think about it. For me, there’s never been anything after I came of age because I already knew what my future was to be. I’ve always know that Ethan will come to claim me and I couldn’t bring myself to think about what I knew would happen after. The thought of it was too depressing. It pushed down on my shoulders like a burden, this future I was supposed to have.
“I’m already spoken for. My intended will take me as his chosen mate.”
She doesn’t say anything but from the look in her eyes, I can tell there are a lot of things she wants to say.
“Once my brother makes up his mind on something there’s no changing it. He’s the most stubborn man under the moon and if he wants you, he’ll have you. Do you love him?”
“More than life itself,” I whispered.
“Are you willing to sacrifice him for this love you have?” She asked. I reel back as if she’s struck me again.
“No. I just… I want to have him for a few more weeks.”
“Didn’t you come here to warn him? Isn’t it too dangerous for the two of you two be together?”
“Help us then.”
She shakes her head. “The two of you are perfect for each other. Stupid. Do you not hear yourself? Why would I join the two of you on this futile endeavor? And for what? For my brother to get his dick wet?” She asked, her eyes dropped over my body. Her language was crass, just like her brother’s.
“I’m sorry. I just came here to wa—”
The door swung open and my heart fell out of my chest. For a second, I thought I’d been caught. When my gaze landed on Shane in the doorway, I expected shock but what I saw was nervousness. I was just thankful he was here. I heaved a breath of relief and ran for him. He slammed the door shut and dropped the items in his hands to the ground.
“What are you doing here?” He asked as I ran into his arms. I stared up at him but he stared past me at his sister. They didn’t say anything but were communicating without words. When they were done, he looked down at me, his eyes softening as he wiped my tears from my face.
“I only wanted to keep you safe,” I cried.
