Chapter 502: I Want to Talk to Stellan Alone
Gillian's words were definitely meant to provoke, but the frustrating part was that Stellan knew it but couldn't say anything, so she just lowered her head and obediently accepted the criticism.
"Not really," Alaric quickly added. "If my wife didn't take good care of me, how could I have recovered? Before I recovered, she took care of me, so after I recovered, shouldn't I take care of her?
It was my carelessness that caused this incident. Gillian is right; she hasn't been in the military, so how could she have such high vigilance? Fortunately, the outcome was good."
Gillian was really angry about Alaric always protecting Stellan. To prevent Thomas from saying anything more, Alaric quickly picked up his wine glass and stood up:
"Mr. Emberlyn, it's been so many years since we last met. I'm really happy to see you again. Here's to you!"
Although Thomas didn't have as much of a drinking capacity as Neil, he did have a bit of a drinking habit.
Stellan had previously told Alaric to quit drinking, and she really didn't want him to drink anymore, but in this situation, she naturally didn't dare to say anything.
"Since you put it that way, I have no choice but to drink." Thomas raised his glass and drank it down.
After drinking, Thomas spoke, "Let's eat, don't just talk and forget to eat."
"Yes," Alaric responded, then picked up his utensils. He looked at Stellan, who was slightly lowering her head. Although she started eating, it was clear she didn't have much of an appetite.
"Stellan," Thomas called her at this moment, making both Stellan and Alaric nervous.
"What is it?" As Stellan quickly put down her utensils, she looked up at Thomas.
"Help yourself." Thomas comforted her. "Don't mind what I said earlier. I'm old and can't help but nag."
"No, Mr. Emberlyn, you were right."
"No matter how much I say, it doesn't really matter. It's still your life to live. I can see that Alaric really likes you. He couldn't even stand a few criticisms of you.
I've watched Alaric grow up. It's no exaggeration to say that I've spent more time with him than he has with his parents. I understand his character.
People who can't become his friends usually think he's arrogant and hard to get along with, but to those who can be his friends, he shows a different side. I can't see how you interact daily, but from what I know of him and what just happened, he treats you very well, so you should appreciate it..."
"Dad!" Gillian couldn't stand it anymore and interrupted Thomas. "You're really too nagging now. Can't even let us eat in peace!"
"Just eat your food. I'm talking to Stellan, not you."
"Aren't you disturbing me by talking here all the time?"
"Look at her temper." Thomas couldn't help but complain to Alaric. "I've spoiled her. In the military, everyone pampered her, making her so arrogant. It's one thing when she was young, but now she's in her twenties and still acts like a child, making people worry."
"In front of you, isn't she just a child?" Alaric voiced with a smile.
"I've helped her too much since she was young, making her life too smooth. Now that she's graduated, I should let her be independent. I won't make any more arrangements for her work. She should experience society on her own." Thomas made up his mind.
"No arrangements? Doesn't matter. I'm a master's degree holder. How hard can it be to find a job myself?" Gillian uttered defiantly.
Thomas just shook his head helplessly, then, with his glass in hand, he looked at Alaric, saying, "Forget about her. Alaric, let's drink."
"Okay, Mr. Emberlyn." Alaric quickly picked up his wine glass.
After another drink, Alaric looked at Thomas and asked, "Mr. Emberlyn, how long do you plan to stay in Arizona this time? I'll make arrangements to show you around."
"I originally planned to stay a few more days, but the government is organizing some event and calling me three times a day, insisting that I go. If there are flights, I'll leave tomorrow."
"You're leaving tomorrow?" Alaric was surprised.
Gillian was also surprised and asked, "Dad, you're leaving tomorrow? Don't take me with you. I still want to stay in Arizona for a few more days. I haven't visited all the fun places here yet."
"You can stay wherever you want. I don't want to take you back. You'll just make me angry." Thomas replied.
"Mr. Emberlyn, why the rush? I wanted to spend more time with you and introduce you to my three kids this weekend."
"I'm also regretful that I couldn't meet your kids this time. But now that I'm retired, I have plenty of time. I can come over anytime. I'm just worried that if I come too often, you'll get tired of me."
"How could that be? I'd be happier if you stayed in Arizona every day."
Hearing that Thomas was leaving tomorrow, Stellan actually felt relieved. She was really afraid of facing him.
The atmosphere during the meal was relatively relaxed, mostly with Alaric and Thomas chatting. After all, they hadn't seen each other for many years and had a lot to talk about.
After finishing the meal, it was already late. Thomas got up first, and Alaric and the others quickly followed.
"Alaric, you and Gillian wait outside for a moment. I want to have a few words with Stellan alone."
Hearing this, Alaric was also nervous and asked with a smile, "Mr. Emberlyn, is that really necessary?"
"Look at you being so nervous. Do you think I would harm Stellan?"
"Alaric," Stellan quickly said, "Listen to Mr. Emberlyn. You wait outside."
Alaric had no choice but to leave the private room with Gillian. After leaving, Alaric looked at Gillian and said directly, "Gillian, you're really good at stirring things up. A good meal turned into constant criticism of Stellan because of you."
"How did I stir things up? I was just worried about you," Gillian complained unhappily. "I just said a few words to Stellan, and you feel so bad for her."
"Knowing I care about her, you still did that. Don't you care about me anymore?" Alaric retorted.
"You!" Gillian was once again angered, then sneezed loudly, shivering from the cold.
"Aren't you young? Aren't you not afraid of the cold?" Alaric asked again.
"I'm not cold. That sneeze was because you made me angry!"
After saying that, Gillian angrily pressed the elevator button. "I'll wait in the car. You wait here for Stellan."
Seeing Gillian off into the elevator, Alaric looked towards the private room. The soundproofing was excellent, and he couldn't hear anything from outside.
Alaric was worried, and Stellan was a bit uneasy. She was already nervous facing Thomas, let alone now being alone with him.
