Chapter 577 Why Did You Lie to Me?
Seeing the scene unfold, Stellan was visibly shaken, and Tommy's anxiety was off the charts.
Not only were his hands shaking, but his entire body was trembling. It was clear he couldn't hear anyone speaking to him.
"Mr. Reaves..." Stellan was about to speak when Alaric quickly stopped her, shaking his head.
Stellan fell silent, and they all waited outside the emergency room. No one spoke, and the entire hallway was eerily quiet.
No, it was deathly silent. The only sound was Tommy's ragged, uneven breathing.
Time dragged on, each minute feeling like an eternity.
"Galatea, you should go home. I'll let you know if there's any news," Alaric suggested, concerned for Stellan, who was pregnant.
"No, going home won't help. I'll just be worried and unable to do anything," Stellan replied. "I've arranged for very experienced specialists. Gillian will be fine."
Alaric nodded, praying that Gillian would indeed be okay. If something happened to her, how would he explain it to Thomas?
He glanced at Tommy, who was pale and clearly distressed, with a mix of complex emotions on his face.
They waited outside like that, not knowing how long it had been, until the door finally opened, and they saw it swing open. Tommy tried to stand up quickly but stumbled, falling to the ground before struggling to his feet.
"The patient has burns covering more than 30% of her body, classified as severe. The worst areas are her back, followed by her chest and limbs. Her face is relatively less affected. We'll perform skin grafts to minimize scarring. She was in shock and has respiratory burns. Even if she pulls through, she'll need at least ten days in the ICU," the doctor explained.
Tommy felt his legs give out. Severe burns? She was so afraid of pain, and now she had severe burns?
Gillian was moved to the ICU, her entire body, including her face, wrapped in bandages. Now her entire body was wrapped up except for her tightly closed eyes.
"Is she still in danger?" Alaric asked the doctor.
"She should be out of immediate danger, but her recovery will be long and complicated, with potential complications. We'll know more once she wakes up."
"Understood," Alaric replied.
After Gillian was transferred to the ICU, Tommy stayed outside the ICU, completely in a state of mental breakdown, and Stellan didn't dare to approach him to talk.
With Gillian in the ICU, Stellan pulled Alaric aside.
"Should we inform Mr. Emberlyn about Gillian?" Stellan asked, considering the severity of the situation.
Tell Thomas?
Alaric really couldn't bear it. If Thomas knew about Gillian's severe burns, he might faint from the heartbreak.
"Since the doctor said she's out of immediate danger, let's wait until she's a bit better before telling Mr. Emberlyn. I'm afraid he won't be able to handle seeing her like this," Alaric said, knowing Thomas was currently traveling abroad.
"Alright, but we need to take good care of Gillian and help her recover quickly. We can't keep this a secret forever," Stellan said.
Alaric sighed. Gillian's severe burns required careful attention, but would that be enough for a quick recovery?
Why did this happen? Why did the house catch fire? Alaric decided to ask Tommy, who must know the truth.
But when Alaric returned to the ICU, Tommy was gone. Where did he go?
Tommy was on the rooftop, clutching an old phone. He dialed a number repeatedly until the other person finally answered.
"Was it you? Did you set the fire?" Tommy was extremely agitated now, with veins bulging on his forehead and neck, his voice trembling with anger. "You promised me you wouldn't hurt her! Why did you lie to me?"
The last time he spoke to this person, they had asked why he was so careless.
At that moment, he did feel a bit flustered and immediately explained, "I drank too much yesterday, but don't worry. Gillian is very naive. She didn't suspect anything and didn't ask any questions. She won't be suspicious."
"Are you sure she won't suspect anything? She's Thomas's daughter and considers Alaric her brother."
"She definitely won't. Please don't hurt her. I can cover this up."
"Alright."
That was the promise. And now?
"Tommy, calm down."
"She's severely burned and still unconscious. If I hadn't arrived in time, she would have died. How can you tell me to calm down?"
"If she only found that old phone, I wouldn't be stupid enough to target a commander's daughter. She also found your account. And she's met Alaric. Even if he didn't notice at the time, he would investigate later. This can't be hidden!"
Gillian found his account? That account?
How did she find it? Only the owner could access it.
"Tommy, I told you to use the money I gave you and then close the account. Why didn't you listen? Why did you keep it?"
Why keep the account?
Was it his fault that Gillian had to be targeted?
Tommy was overwhelmed with grief, unable to speak, feeling like his heart was being eaten by thousands of ants, his body covered in painful goosebumps.
"Tommy, I know you care about Gillian, but she has to die. If you can't do it, I will," the elder on the phone said calmly. "Don't ruin yourself over a lover. I've planned everything. You can walk away unscathed."
He explained the plan in detail, then asked, "Do you understand, Tommy? Follow my instructions, and you'll be..."
"I don't want to hear it!" Tommy shouted, breaking down. "I've listened to you my whole life. I don't want to anymore! Hurting her is hurting me. Wanting her dead is wanting me dead!"
"Tommy! Don't be foolish! The situation is..."
Tommy hung up and turned off the phone. He didn't want to hear another word.
After the call, Tommy felt an overwhelming sense of despair. His heart ached more and more.
Tommy thought of Gillian still in the intensive care unit and the fact that the other person was still intent on killing her. In a panic, he hurried down from the rooftop, but his emotions made it feel like his limbs were not responding to him.
As he reached the last step, he nearly fell, but someone caught him. He looked up to see Josep.
