Chapter 531: Why Can't I Always Avoid Him?
"Let's not do this," Tommy replied. "I'll call Mr. Emberlyn tomorrow and talk to him."
"Don't, don't be impulsive!" Gillian quickly stopped him. "We're so free-spirited, and he's not in Arizona. There's no rush to let him know. If he finds out, he'll just nag."
"But we're already in a relationship. It's not right to hide it from Mr. Emberlyn, and..."
"Tommy, are you from another era? Why are you so conservative? We're in love, so what? Who cares? He's my dad, I know him. He always goes along with what I want. Besides, I've found such an excellent son-in-law for him; he'll bethrilled."
At this point, Gillian felt truly satisfied. She wrapped her arms around his neck and lay in his embrace.
"My dad used to say that with my temper, even if my husband could tolerate me, my in-laws wouldn't like me. I really hate the idea of in-laws."
Gillian laughed excitedly and looked at Tommy, saying, "Tommy, you're perfect for me. I've found such a perfect boyfriend, and I don't have to deal with in-laws. I'm so happy."
Tommy was taken aback by her fervent admiration and affection. He smiled helplessly and spoke softly, "Alright, it's getting late. Let's sleep."
"But I'm too excited to sleep," Gillian was extremely exhilarated. She suddenly jumped on him and asked, "It's our first time making love. Aren't you excited? How can you sleep?"
"What else should I do?" Tommy naturally held her body.
"Let's do it again."
"What?"
"Come on, I'm being proactive."
The moonlight scattered in the room, casting a charming ambiance. It was intoxicating.
Gillian truly experienced Stellan's joy this time, and the satisfaction she felt seemed even greater than Stellan's.
Once she fell in love, especially for the first time, her heart couldn't help but flutter. She wanted to be with Tommy 24/7.
For the next three days, except for Tommy's work hours, Gillian stayed with him, while Stellan had a tough time.
Her morning sickness was getting worse, almost vomiting from morning till night. She couldn't even drink water without throwing up.
"Why are you vomiting so badly?" Alaric was both heartbroken and anxious seeing her like this. "Stellan, if it gets too bad, maybe we should..."
Stellan immediately interrupted him, "We've already decided to keep the baby, so let's not talk about this."
"But you're suffering so much, and it's not even three months yet. What if it gets worse in the eighth or ninth month and we have to induce labor then..."
"You said last time that everything would be fine, and now you're being negative again."
Alaric didn't want to be negative, but the situation was worrying.
"Alright, I know you're concerned about me, but pregnancy is like this." Stellan took Alaric's hand to console him, "I've been like this for over a month. If we abort now, wouldn't all this suffering be for nothing?"
Alaric didn't know what to say or whether this decision was right or wrong.
"Tomorrow is the day of the retrial," Alaric uttered. "You absolutely can't attend this time."
"Okay." Stellan was really angry last time.
"Just stay home and wait for the result tomorrow."
"Okay."
"Alright, let's go to bed early tonight."
Stellan wasn't sleeping well these days, and naturally, Alaric wasn't either. He was so sensitive that he would wake up whenever Stellan turned over.
Maybe it was because of the retrial tomorrow, Alaric didn't sleep at all that night, feeling a mix of emotions.
The next day, Stellan didn't attend the retrial, and neither did Alaric. They left everything to Alvin.
When Alvin called, they thought the result was out, but something unexpected happened.
"Hestia didn't show up in court today?"
"Yes, we even went to her place, but no one was there, and her phone was off."
Missing? How could Hestia suddenly disappear? She was so confident last time, and she might not even lose this time. Given her previous attitude, she would never miss the court date.
"Keep me updated if you hear anything."
"Will do, Mr. Knight."
"What happened?" Stellan asked after seeing Alaric take Alvin's call. "Is there a result?"
"No, Hestia didn't show up in court. She's currently unreachable."
"Unreachable?"
"Don't worry about it. We'll be informed if there's any news." Alaric had a vague sense of foreboding.
At that moment, Stellan's phone rang again. It was Tommy calling. Seeing the call, Alaric answered it for her.
Hearing Alaric on the line, Tommy politely greeted, "Mr. Knight."
"Stellan is pregnant now, so we're trying to limit her use of electronic devices. What do you need to discuss?"
"Alright, I just wanted to ask if there's been a result from today's court session."
"Tommy, you seem very concerned."
"This affects the outcome of my case, so of course, I'm concerned." Tommy asked again, "Is there a result?"
"No, the court session didn't go smoothly today." Alaric didn't mention Hestia's disappearance.
"Alright, sorry to bother you."
Tommy hung up the phone. It was noon, and if work wasn't too busy, Tommy would come home to cook for Gillian.
"Tommy, did you just call Alaric?" Gillian questioned.
"I actually called Mrs. Knight, but Mr. Knight answered. I forgot Mrs. Knight is pregnant." Tommy explained, "I was asking about the defamation case Mrs. Knight filed against Hestia. Since today was the court date, I wanted to check."
"You're really concerned about this, huh?" Gillian felt a bit jealous.
Seeing her slight displeasure, Tommy smiled helplessly, then pulled her onto his lap, holding her like a child.
"It's just for work. We have strict deadlines for closing cases. If we don't wrap up the case on time, we'll get penalized. The Marigold case has dragged on for so long, so of course, I want to close it soon. But the court sessions haven't been going smoothly. They were postponed before, and today, it seems there was no session either. I don't know what's going on."
Gillian pouted and looked at him sympathetically. "Having deadlines must be so stressful. It sucks that you're so tired every day."
"It's not hard. Pressure gives us motivation." Tommy replied, "I'll go to the courthouse tomorrow to check on the situation directly, so I won't bother Mrs. Knight."
"Alright, but you work so hard. I'll make sure to reward you tonight."
Every time Gillian acted like this, Tommy couldn't help but smile indulgently.
Night fell again. Stellan had been vomiting badly today and went to bed early without dinner. Alaric lay beside her, unable to sleep, so he picked up a book to read.
This time, Stellan slept relatively peacefully. Three or four hours passed without any discomfort. Seeing it was almost midnight, Alaric put down his book, turned off the lamp, and was about to sleep when his phone rang.
Seeing it was Neil calling, he had a bad feeling.
"There's been an incident. Hestia is dead," Neil explained. "Her body was found by the river, discovered by a scavenger who called the police."
Alaric had suspected as much when Hestia went missing.
"I understand. I'll come over now." Alaric knew that logically, he and Stellan would be the prime suspects. If he didn't go to the police, they would come to him.
He looked at Stellan, who was still sleeping soundly. Alaric got out of bed and left the bedroom, telling the housekeeper, "Take good care of Stellan. If she feels unwell, call me immediately."
"Yes, Mr. Knight."
Alaric drove to the police station. As he arrived, he saw another car pull up. Tommy got out; he had also been called by Neil.
Seeing Tommy, Alaric took a deep breath. Tommy was in charge of the Marigold case, and now with Hestia's death, he's still in charge. Why couldn't he ever get away from him?
