Chapter 629 The Reason He Was Injured in the Explosion
Ryder wheeled himself out of the study, and as soon as he was gone, Eva piped up, "Dr. Ryan, don't mind Mr. Ryder Rivers. He's always grumpy and harsh. It's just how he is."
"Was he always like this, even before the accident?" Aurora asked while she tidied up the books.
"No, not at all. He used to be such a sweet kid, and everyone in the family adored him. He was always top of his class. After high school, Mr. Leopold Rivers sent him abroad to study finance, hoping he'd come back and help Mr. Tristram Rivers run the company."
"Finance was Mr. Leopold Rivers' idea. Ryder's real passion was chemistry. He loved doing experiments since he was a kid. Mr. Leopold Rivers even built him a lab in the backyard of the Rivers Mansion. Ryder could spend an entire day in there."
"Right after he graduated and came back home, Mr. Leopold Rivers wanted him to join the company, but Ryder refused. He asked for a few days, and during those days, he locked himself in his lab. No one knew what he was working on, but there was an explosion."
"They fought to save his life, and they did, but his legs were paralyzed, and his face was disfigured. After that, he changed completely. Mr. Leopold Rivers had always spoiled him."
"But after the accident, Ryder became unbearable. Every time Mr. Leopold Rivers visited, Ryder would lash out, so he stopped coming as often. Mr. Tristram Rivers has been the one taking care of him, searching for doctors all over the country to find a way to heal his legs."
"But it's no use if Ryder doesn't cooperate. He drives away every doctor who comes. It's driving me crazy."
Aurora didn't respond. After helping Eva organize the study, Eva thanked her profusely, "Thank you so much, Dr. Ryan. I wouldn't have known what to do without you."
"You're welcome."
"Alright, Dr. Ryan, I need to get back to cleaning before Mr. Ryder Rivers loses his temper again." With that, Eva hurried downstairs to continue her chores.
Ryder must have gone back to his room. Aurora took a deep breath, unsure of what to do next.
She had already accepted Tristram's money and transferred it to Cormac. She couldn't just leave, but with Ryder being so uncooperative, she was at a loss.
Her phone rang while she was still in the villa. Seeing it was Cormac, she quickly stepped outside to answer.
After receiving the money from Tristram, she immediately transferred it to Cormac. She had meant to call him, but Tristram's people had arrived to pick her up.
Cormac had been so busy he hadn't checked his phone. When he finally did, he saw the bank notification and was shocked to see Aurora had transferred $600,000 to him.
"Uncle Cormac, I was at a club activity with my classmates earlier. I transferred the money to you and forgot to mention it."
"I called you about that. Aurora, where did you get so much money?"Seeing the $600,000 transfer, Cormac was floored. How did she get that much cash?
The $600,000 included $200,000 from Tristram and a refund of two years' rent. Cormac had rented her a high-end apartment at $15,000 a month, totaling $360,000 for two years. Plus, he had given her living expenses, which she had saved.
She kept a little for herself and sent the rest to Cormac. It was his money. The $200,000 from the Rivers family wasn't even enough to cover the rent he had paid for her.
Cormac had spent so much on her over the years. This money was just a drop in the bucket, not enough to repay him, let alone make up for what her father had done to the Nash family.
Aurora had never lied before, but this time she had to.
"Uncle Cormac, last month I saved an elderly man who had a stroke. Turns out he was loaded, and to thank me, he gave me $600,000. I didn't need that much money, so I sent it to you."
Cormac found it hard to believe. "You saved an old man, and he gave you $600,000 out of gratitude?"
"Yeah, it even made the local news in Silverlight City. I'll send you the article."
Cormac knew Aurora wasn't one to lie, but...
"Even so, we can't accept that money. I'll transfer it back, and you can return it to him," Cormac insisted.
"I tried to refuse, but he wouldn't take no for an answer. I had no choice."
Aurora explained, "Saving lives shouldn't come with a reward, especially for a medical student like me. But to him, it was a life-saving favor, and he insisted on showing his gratitude."
Cormac thought it over. If he had saved someone, he wouldn't expect a reward, but if someone saved him, he would want to show his gratitude.
"Alright, if he insisted, then keep it," Cormac said. "But Aurora, that's your money. You should keep it."
"Uncle Cormac!" Aurora interrupted. "I'm still a student. I don't need that much money, and it's not safe for me to have it. Please keep it for me."
She had a point. With hackers and thieves around, it wasn't safe for her to have that much money.
"Okay, I'll save it for you until you graduate."
"Thank you, Uncle Cormac. I'll get back to my studies now." Aurora quickly hung up, afraid her lie would be discovered.
She didn't know how to handle Ryder. When he threw a book at her and told her to leave, she wanted to return the $200,000 and walk away.
But after talking to Cormac, she felt the $600,000 was too little, even if it were $6 million, it wouldn't ease her guilt.
Cormac said he'd save the money for her. If she asked for the $200,000 back, he'd know something was up and come rushing over. She couldn't let that happen. So, with Ryder...
Her phone rang again, startling her. This time it was Tristram.
From the second-floor window, Ryder watched her take two phone calls in the yard. His eyes darkened as he pulled the curtains, blocking her from his view.
