Chapter 618 Complaining about Tommy
Gillian yanked Tommy up, insisting they leave, but Tommy stood his ground. "No way, I haven't even seen Mr. Emberlyn yet. We can't just leave."
"He's my dad, I know him. We gotta go, now!" Gillian forcefully dragged Tommy up and pulled him out quickly.
Hearing the silence outside, Thomas hurriedly opened the door and saw that the yard was empty. He anxiously asked Jenny, "Where'd they go?"
"They left, Ms. Emberlyn and her boyfriend."
"They left? Just like that?"
"They left? Were they here to apologize? Where did they go? Are they eloping?" Thomas was furious. He was about to open the door, and they just left?
Jenny stood by silently. After his anger subsided, Thomas reflected and asked Jenny, "Did I make him kneel for too long?"
"A bit," Jenny replied slowly. "And it's freezing out there. Ms. Emberlyn and her boyfriend weren't dressed warmly. Their faces were red from the cold."
What parent doesn't love their child? Hearing their faces were red from the cold, Thomas couldn't help but soften.
"Gillian, how unlucky am I to be your father!" Thomas complained bitterly, then instructed Jenny, "Book me a flight to Phoenix!"
Gillian and Tommy left, but Tommy was still uneasy, wanting to go back and apologize. Gillian wouldn't agree.
When the home phone rang, Gillian quickly answered. Jenny reported, "Ms. Emberlyn, Mr. Emberlyn asked me to book him a flight to Phoenix."
Tommy was shocked. "Really?"
"I told you, he's my dad. The sympathy act and reverse psychology work wonders on him. I'm his only daughter; he can't bear to lose me." Gillian happily told Tommy after hanging up.
But Thomas had compromised, and Tommy felt even more guilty. Seeing his thoughts, Gillian quickly said, "Tommy, you've already served three years in prison. Don't put so much pressure on yourself. If you feel guilty, let's just be good to my dad from now on, okay?"
"Okay."
Tommy was genuinely grateful to Thomas. If he agreed, Tommy would treat him like his own father.
"See, isn't that better?"
Seeing Gillian so happy, Tommy forced a smile and said, "Looks like Cormac's plan worked. But with you around, Mr. Emberlyn was bound to soften. Josep might not be so easy."
Josep had been good to Tommy, always caring for him. When Tommy was working as an assistant for Ambrose at Far East International, Josep was worried when he couldn't find him, even calling Stellan. But...
So Tommy planned to kneel until Josep forgave him, and in fact, he did just that. The result...
"Did it work?" Cormac was surprised and proud to hear that Thomas and Josep agreed to come to Phoenix for New Year's. "See, my plan for Tommy worked! How could it not work on these kind-hearted old men?"
Alaric remained silent.
Cormac checked the time and said, "Aurora's flight should be landing soon. I'm heading to the airport to pick her up. Everyone's spending New Year's at your place, so make sure everything's set. We got a lot of folks coming; don't let them down."
"Got it, go get your Aurora."
Cormac grabbed his car keys and hurried off. Hearing that Thomas and Josep were coming, Alaric was happy too. It was rare to have everyone together for New Year's, so he had to make sure everything was perfect.
Thomas flew to Phoenix, and Tommy and Gillian came with Josep. Once everyone arrived, Thomas and Josep met for the second time.
The first time they met, they got along well. This time, they were both frustrated with Tommy and had a lot to complain about.
So on New Year's morning, the three young men were busy preparing the New Year's Eve dinner, while the women chatted and took care of the kids. With so many young people around, Thomas and Josep couldn't join the conversation, so they decided to go fishing.
Despite the cold, the sunny weather was perfect. They broke the ice and sat by the lake, fishing and venting their frustrations.
"When I left back then, I swore I'd never come back to Phoenix. But..." Josep started complaining. "Tommy knelt at my door in this freezing weather. I was afraid he'd freeze to death. I couldn't not forgive him, but he wouldn't get up."
"Exactly! He did the same to me!" Thomas was indignant. "Isn't this emotional blackmail? They know we'll soften and play this game with us. If we make him kneel too long, we look like we're bullying him. But if we let him off, it's infuriating!"
"Absolutely!" Josep had a lot to vent. "When he first came to me, he said I was his distant uncle, and his family had some misfortune. He wanted me to help him find a job in Phoenix."
"He told me that, and I racked my brain trying to remember which distant nephew he was. He said his parents divorced when he was young, and I vaguely remembered a distant nephew who had a tough life after his parents divorced."
"I didn't dig deeper. Who would lie about something like that? If he weren't desperate, he wouldn't have come to me. So I helped him. And what did I get? Betrayal!"
"Exactly, it's infuriating!" Thomas complained. "A good friend of mine once told me he had a great undercover cop, very capable. Later, my friend died in the line of duty."
"I saw the news about the Vale family and noticed Tommy. I realized he was the undercover cop my friend mentioned. Being an undercover cop is dangerous, and he's so capable. I couldn't let his talent go to waste."
"So I flew over, vouched for him, and helped him regain his identity to become a proper cop. And what did he do? He turned around and messed with my daughter, like he hypnotized her, making her head over heels for him."
"Think about it, Thomas, a man of honor, a war hero, reduced to this because of Tommy. It's infuriating! Where's the justice in that?"
