Chapter 521: Gillian, Come Home with Me
Tommy brought Gillian back to his home, which was in a mid-to-high-end neighborhood not far from the police station.
"The place is a bit small, Ms. Emberlyn, I hope you don't mind," Tommy spoke as they entered. "The bathroom is the first door on the left. You can take a shower first."
"Okay."
Gillian glanced around. The house wasn't heavily decorated, but it was spotless, and everything was neatly arranged.
Gillian then went into the bathroom, which was also very clean. After a while, Tommy knocked on the door and explained, "Ms. Emberlyn, I don't have any women's clothes here. This pajama set is new. You can use it for now. I'll leave it at the door."
"Got it."
Gillian still didn't quite understand why she had come home with Tommy. Maybe she was really mad at Alaric, and since she trusted the cop, she just went home with him.
After her shower, Gillian walked out of the bathroom in the pajamas Tommy had provided, smelling a strong aroma.
"All done?" Tommy came over with a bowl of hot cocoa. "A cup of hot cocoa. Drink it; it'll warm you up."
Seeing the hot cocoa, Gillian was genuinely surprised. After thanking him, she slowly drank it.
"It's getting late. You should get some sleep," Tommy voiced. "But I only have one bedroom. You can sleep in the bedroom tonight, and I'll stay in the living room."
Actually, Tommy's house was quite large, with four rooms. However, he had kept only one bedroom and a study, converting the other two rooms into a gym.
Gillian had noticed the gym earlier and couldn't help but ask, "Do you like working out that much?"
"Yeah, otherwise I'd have nothing to do after work."
Entering his gym, Gillian was genuinely impressed. "You have a lot of equipment here. Some of these I've never even seen before."
"It's a way to pass the time and stay fit. Two birds with one stone."
Gillian curiously looked at the equipment and asked about one, "What's this for?"
"That's for arm strength," Tommy said, seeing her interest. "Let me show you."
Seeing Tommy do it so effortlessly, Gillian got interested, curiously giving it a try.
"Careful," Tommy cautioned her, seeing her struggle and almost get hurt. He quickly helped her. "You have to take it step by step, or you could easily get injured."
"Wow, it looks so easy, but it's really hard to do."
Tommy just smiled at that.
Gillian looked around the gym again and then noticed the study across the hall, drawn to the large bookshelf.
"You have so many books here!"
"Glad you like them." Tommy replied nonchalantly.
Gillian suddenly recognized some familiar titles.
"Aren't these finance books?"
She was surprised and then noticed his degree certificates on the shelf.
"You're a PhD in Finance?" Gillian was shocked. "But you're a police officer?"
"Yes," Tommy explained. "I was an undercover cop abroad, posing as a university student. That's when I earned my PhD."
"No way! That's so hard. How can you talk about it so casually?" Gillian was suddenly very impressed. "I've been thinking about pursuing a PhD in Finance at Arizona University, but I'm worried I won't be able to handle it."
"Why not? It's not that hard," Tommy answered. "If you need help, I can teach you."
"So many people prepare for years and still can't achieve it. How are you so amazing?" Gillian had spent a lot of time on her master's degree and almost got depressed, so she really admired Tommy. "Doesn't being a cop waste your finance PhD?"
"Not at all. Knowledge is never wasted."
"That's true."
After checking the time, Tommy adviced her, "You've been out for a while. You should call Mr. Knight. He might be worried."
"No way," Gillian refused, still upset. "He's busy taking care of Stellan, who burned her hand. He doesn't care about me."
"Even so, but..."
"No buts. I just don't want to call him." Gillian interrupted.
"Alright, if you don't want to call, just get some rest. I'll be in the living room if you need anything," Tommy told her.
Gillian looked at the living room, feeling a bit guilty that he would have to sleep on the couch tonight.
Gillian went into the bedroom and closed the door. Lying on Tommy's bed felt quite strange. She had just closed her eyes to sleep when the doorbell rang.
Hearing the doorbell, she quickly got up. By the time she walked out of the bedroom, Tommy was already opening the door.
As expected, it was Alaric standing outside, drenched from head to toe.
Alaric had driven around looking for Gillian, checked security footages, and searched all the hotels in Arizona.
The surveillance showed her getting into a car, but the heavy rain made it hard to see clearly. After much effort, he found out it was Tommy's car.
"Mr. Knight," Tommy greeted politely upon seeing Alaric.
Alaric ignored Tommy and looked at Gillian behind him, speaking sternly, "Gillian, come home with me."
"I'm not going back. The Knight Mansion isn't my home!"
"Gillian, I was wrong today. I shouldn't have been so harsh on you. Let's talk about it at home."
No matter what, Alaric couldn't let Gillian stay at Tommy's house overnight.
"I said I'm not going back."
"What do you want to do then? Stay at a stranger's house in the middle of the night?" Alaric questioned.
"I'm not going back. You don't welcome me anyway. I'm never going back to The Knight Mansion."
Alaric was really angry now. He grabbed Gillian's wrist and had to compromise, "If you won't come back to The Knight Mansion, then we'll go to a hotel. You can't stay here."
"Let go of me. I don't want to go anywhere. You're hurting me!"
Seeing Alaric about to drag her out, Tommy intervened, "Mr. Knight, I have no right to interfere in your matters, but Ms. Emberlyn's hand is injured. You're hurting her. And since she doesn't want to leave, why force her?"
Hearing this, Alaric let go of Gillian's wrist and looked coldly at Tommy. "Taking in a runaway Gillian for the night, Tommy, you sure are kind. But I have to ask, why were you driving near The Knight Mansion in such terrible weather tonight?"
