Chapter 585 I Really Want to See What's Inside Your Head
After leaving the police station, Alaric couldn't shake off his frustration. He had thought that once Tommy spoke up, everything would be clear.
The result was unexpected. Who was the person hiding behind Tommy? Was it the one who had been supporting him since childhood? But who exactly was that person?
Tommy had hurt Gillian so much, yet he still preferred to die rather than betray that person.
Alaric had no choice but to drive back to the hospital. As he approached Gillian's room, he heard voices inside. He quickly pushed the door open and saw Josep there.
"Josep, what are you doing here?" Alaric asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
"Today's the 18th, my clinic day," Josep replied. "After finishing up, I thought I'd come by to check on Gillian. I was just talking to her about Tommy's absence, and she said he was on a business trip."
"Yeah, he's on a business trip," Alaric said, not wanting to say more. "Josep, you've had a long day. You should head home and get some rest."
"Alright," Josep agreed, then turned to Gillian. "Gillian, with your dad away and Tommy on a trip, if you need anything, just let me know."
"I will, thank you, Uncle Josep," Gillian said gratefully.
After Josep left, it was just Alaric and Gillian in the room.
Alaric looked at Gillian. Tommy was right; this love-struck Gillian was a fool!
But she was already deeply involved with Tommy. If they couldn't catch the person behind Tommy, Tommy would die. If they did catch the mastermind, Tommy would still face prison.
Even if Gillian was willing to stay with Tommy, Thomas would never agree. So, as Tommy said, they had no future.
"How are you feeling today?" Alaric asked.
"Much better," Gillian replied honestly.
"That's good," Alaric said. "I'll call Mr. Emberlyn and have him come over."
Gillian was much better than when she was first burned. It was time to tell Thomas. But just as he was about to make the call, Gillian stopped him.
"Please don't tell my dad. If he finds out, he'll be scared to death," Gillian said. "I already talked to him and told him I'm fine. He's back home from his trip."
She had reassured Thomas?
"Gillian, when did you become so considerate? Not wanting to worry Mr. Emberlyn?"
"I've always been considerate. I don't want to worry my dad, and if he knew, he'd take me away from Arizona City. I don't want to leave."
She didn't want to leave? The real reason was Tommy.
"And I've finally won half the battle. How can I give up now?" Gillian said, showing Alaric her bank transfer records with a smile.
"I knew my dad wouldn't understand. He already transferred the money for me to buy a house in Arizona City. How could I let him know about my burns now? He's out of town, and as long as you and I don't tell him, he won't know. I'll tell him once I'm fully recovered."
Alaric glanced at the transfer records from Thomas. As a father himself, he could understand Thomas's anger.
Thomas had raised Gillana with so much care, but she was infatuated with a man. Even knowing the danger, she still pursued him. Despite being hurt by him, she still asked for money to buy a house for them.
If Elisa grew up to be like this, Alaric would want to strangle her.
"Gillian, are you that desperate to get married? You found a boyfriend, pursued him, and even asked your dad for money to buy a house. I want to knock some sense into you!"
Alaric was furious. If she knew Tommy was about to die, would she follow him to the grave?
"There's no rule that says the man has to buy the house. If I had siblings, it would be different. But I'm my dad's only daughter. His property will be mine eventually. I'm just taking it early. I don't want to pressure Tommy. I want him to focus on his career. When he's successful, my dad will be happy too."
When Tommy was successful?
He was already in jail, thinking about dying. How could he be successful?
If Gillian were well, Alaric could talk to her slowly. But in her current state, finally showing emotional improvement after the burns, he couldn't bring himself to tell her the truth.
He couldn't imagine the consequences if she knew Tommy's situation.
"Alright, get some rest," Alaric said. "If you don't want Mr. Emberlyn to know, I'll keep it from him for now. Stay here as long as you need."
With burns like hers, it would take at least two to three months to recover.
With Tommy gone and Thomas away, there was no one to care for her if she left the hospital. She should stay until she was fully recovered.
"Thank you, Alaric," Gillian said with a smile. "It's great that Stellan is the hospital director. I can stay in this luxurious room for free."
Alaric didn't want to say more, just saying simply "Just rest well."
He left the room and soon heard a notification of phone. It took him a moment to realize it was Tommy's phone, which he had.
[Tommy, I've got the money for the house. When you get back, we can buy it. When I'm discharged, we can move into our new home.]
Reading the message, Alaric felt a mix of emotions. Gillian truly loved Tommy, and Tommy loved her too.
But it was a love that should never have started. How could it end now?
Alaric didn't reply, unsure what to say on Tommy's behalf.
He silenced Tommy's phone and put it away. He had been so busy with Gillian's situation that he had neglected Stellan.
Stellan was seven months pregnant, at a critical stage. Once they got through this, he could focus on Gillian and Tommy.
As usual, Stellan and Rowena had their prenatal check-ups together.
Rowena's belly was already large. Cormac carefully helped her into the exam room. Alaric was not only careful but also worried and nervous.
This was the final hurdle. If they didn't pass, Stellan would need to terminate the pregnancy. That would be devastating.
