Chapter 533: Two People, A Private Space
Alaric was right. He practically watched Gillian grow up. Thomas treated Alaric like his own son, and Gillian indeed considered him a close friend.
Now that Gillian and Tommy are in a relationship, it's impossible to avoid Alaric.
"Of course," Tommy replied. "As Gillian's friend, you have that right."
"Very well," Alaric asked, "May I be so bold as to ask about your family background?"
Lately, it seemed like this question kept coming up, and Tommy could only answer once more, "In terms of family background, I'm indeed far behind Gillian. My parents divorced when I was very young, and they each started new families. I was essentially left without parents and haven't been in contact with them for many years."
"That's truly unfortunate," Alaric continued, "Tommy, I shouldn't pry too much into your unfortunate experiences, but I'm a bit curious, so I have to ask. Since your parents stopped caring for you at a young age, how did you manage to stay in school and graduate with a PhD? Did someone sponsor you?"
'
Logically, children who are grow up without any supervision usually end up dropping out of school early.
"Yes, many people sponsored me," Tommy replied. 'At that time, I did consider dropping out, but I was a good student. My teachers thought it was a pity, so they organized a fundraiser at the school, which allowed me to continue my education."
"That's a blessing in disguise," Alaric uttered sarcastically. "They say an unfortunate childhood can affect a person's entire life, leading many to go astray. Ambrose is the most typical example. He had an unfortunate childhood, which led to severe psychological issues, and he became increasingly worse. You're lucky to have had warm-hearted people around you despite your misfortunes."
'
"Yes," Tommy spoke slowly, "It was indeed a blessing in disguise, and I'm very grateful."
At this point, Neil's car had already stopped in front, and Tommy also parked his car.
"Mr. Knight, it seems we've arrived."
"Alright." Alaric responded indifferently, then opened the car door and got out.
They were by the river, in a very secluded area. There was a lot of trash piled up by the river, so scavengers often came here to pick through it.
"This definitely isn't the primary crime scene," Neil clarified after looking around, "But dumping the body here isn't very clever. After all, there are many scavengers here, making it easy to discover the body."
"So this further proves that the killer wanted the body to be found. Otherwise, how could the killer frame someone?" Alaric uttered.
Tommy remained silent, putting on gloves to investigate the scene.
By the time the phone rang, it was almost dawn. It was Stellan calling.
Stellan had gone to bed very early last night, so she woke up early as well. When she opened her eyes, it was just after five, but she found that Alaric was no longer in bed. After asking the servants, she learned that Alaric had gone out the previous night and hadn't returned yet. Naturally, Stellan was worried and quickly called him.
"Stellan."
"Alaric, where did you go? Why did you go out last night and haven't come back yet?" Stellan asked worriedly.
Although Alaric knew that he couldn't hide Hestia's death from Stellan, he wanted to delay it as much as possible. Even if he had to tell her, it couldn't be over the phone.
"Something came up. Don't worry, I'm coming back right now."
After hanging up the phone, Alaric voiced, "I have to go back now, Neil. Call me later."
"Alright, go back and be with Stellan."
Not long after Alaric left, Tommy's phone also rang.
Last night, Gillian had fallen asleep in his arms, but he was called away by a phone call and hadn't returned yet. Gillian was also worried.
"Tommy, why aren't you back yet? It's already daylight."
"Gillian, why are you up so early?' Tommy cooed. "Go back to sleep. I'll try to get back to make you breakfast."
"Don't worry about breakfast. I won't starve myself. I'm asking you, did a murder happen?" Gillian asked.
"Yes, so I'm still busy. Go back to sleep. I'll come back as soon as I'm done."
"You've been up all night and still have to keep working?" Gillian was really worried and distressed. "Who can handle that?"
"It's normal. I'll be back soon."
"Alright, I'll wait for you a bit longer. If they make you work all night and then all day, I'll complain to your boss!"
Tommy smiled helplessly and replied, "Got it. Go to sleep. I'll find you when I get back."
Seeing Tommy hang up the phone, Neil couldn't help but shake his head and sigh, "So sweet. Poor me, single and no one to care if I drop dead."
"Neil, you're joking," Tommy uttered. "You should go back and rest. I'll handle the rest."
This case was originally Tommy's responsibility, and Neil was just helping out.
"I'm fine. I'm just killing time anyway," Neil replied. "I've pulled many all-nighters. You go back."
"No need, I can handle it."
"Don't argue. I'm sending you back because I have a more challenging task for you." Neil added, "Putting aside any personal feelings, Stellan is logically the most suspicious person. Even if it's just a formality, it has to be done. Do you understand?"
"I get it."
This was also what Tommy was most worried about.
"Go back. I heard everything just now. If I don't let you go, Gillian will complain about me," Neil sighed. "Gillian is Mr. Emberlyn's daughter. I can't afford to offend her. Go back."
"Alright, Neil, thank you."
After Tommy left, Alaric had already arrived home. Stellan was waiting in the yard.
"Who told you to wait outside?" Alaric quickly got out of the car and pulled her close. "It's so cold, and you're pregnant. What if you catch a cold? Let's go inside."
"I was worried. What happened? You were out all night and didn't come back." Stellan replied, very concerned.
"Let's talk inside." Alaric cooed, leading Stellan back into the house.
Once inside the hall, Alaric didn't know how to start. He was afraid of scaring Stellan, especially since she was pregnant.
"What happened?" The more Alaric hesitated, the more anxious Stellan became. "Alaric, tell me."
"Hestia is dead." Alaric finally uttered.
