Chapter 572: Discovered His Secret Again
Gillian now had no choice but to try one bank after another, starting with the big banks and then the smaller ones. She figured she would eventually find her account.
But after visiting four major banks with no success, she went to a fifth one, which was a smaller bank. She didn't have much hope but decided to give it a try.
"Could you please check if I have an account at this bank?" Gillian asked.
"Sure, please wait a moment."
Gillian sat down to wait, and Tommy's wallet accidentally fell out of her bag. She saw Tommy's driver's license and handed it to the staff as well.
"This is my husband's. Could you check his account too? If there is one, please transfer everything to a checking account. I need the money urgently for a house purchase." Gillian spoke.
Tommy's salary card was with her, but he couldn't possibly have just one bank card, right? If there was money in other banks that he had forgotten about, she wanted to gather it all.
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but checking an account requires the account holder to be present with their driver's license. Even spouses cannot do this." The staff member apologized and returned Tommy's driver's license to Gillian.
Gillian was unhappy with this refusal. She had already visited four banks and was feeling down. Why were there so many conditions just to check an account?
"My husband is very busy with work and doesn't have time to come to the bank. I just want to check it together." Gillian spoke.
"But this doesn't meet the requirements. Please..."
"Let me tell you, rules are rules, but people can be flexible. I just went to four other banks, and they all helped me check. I'm a big customer here. If you can't meet this small request, I'll have to move all my money out of this bank."
Gillian knew she was being unreasonable, but she had been running around all day and didn't want to bother Tommy with this. She wanted to handle it herself if possible.
"Please wait a moment. I'll consult with our manager." The staff replied.
Gillian didn't have much hope. She was just venting her frustration. If they checked and found nothing under her or Tommy's name, it would be embarrassing.
After consulting, the manager surprisingly agreed, and Gillian started to feel anxious. She prayed that the account Thomas had opened for her was at this bank; otherwise, she might be escorted out by security.
The staff began to check, and when they found something, their expression changed to one of shock.
Gillian was surprised. Did Thomas really open an account at this bank? Was there a lot of money in it?
"Did you find it?" Gillian asked quickly.
"Yes, we did," the staff member replied. "Ma'am, please follow me to the VIP room."
The bank manager came out to personally attend to her, which shocked Gillian. How much money had her father saved for her to warrant this kind of treatment?
Not only did the manager personally attend to her, but he also made her a cup of coffee and respectfully handed it to her. "Ms. Emberlyn, you mentioned earlier that Mr. Reaves is your husband?"
She had said that earlier, fearing that the bank staff wouldn't check if they knew Tommy was just her boyfriend. They wouldn't ask for a marriage certificate, would they?
Gillian had to continue the pretense confidently. "Yes, he's my husband. Why?"
Gillian was puzzled. 'Why were they suddenly asking about Tommy?'
"Mr. Reaves is one of our most esteemed VIP clients. It's an honor to meet Mrs. Reaves today." The manager explained.
What did that mean?
"What kind of business is Mr. Reaves in? It must be very successful," the manager spoke, smiling in an overly eager way. "And for so many years, only deposits and no withdrawals. He's really benefited our bank a lot. He's truly an amazing client."
A VIP client? Only deposits and no withdrawals for years?
Gillian quickly understood, pretending to be a wealthy wife. "Of course, it's big business. My husband has accounts at various banks, so much money that it's hard to keep track of. That's why he sent me to check."
"Yes, rich folks are like that. I suggest you hire a financial manager. There's no need for Mrs. Reaves to handle these matters personally."
"Oh, can you check the balance of that account for me?"
"Of course, please wait a moment."
When Gillian saw the balance, she was blown away by how many digits there were.
She had imagined a lot, but not a billion!
"Mrs. Reaves, are you considering withdrawing the money? It might be worth leaving it in for a few more years. Let me show you some of our bank's financial products. They offer great benefits."
"No, I don't need to see them, and I'm not withdrawing. Just leave it as it is."
"Alright, if you need anything, feel free to call me. Here's my business card." The manager respectfully handed her his card, and Gillian took it before leaving the bank.
As she walked out, her mind was in a daze. What had she just seen? Why did Tommy have so much money in his account?
According to Tommy, his parents divorced when he was young, and no one took care of him. He later became an undercover cop and now a regular police officer, earning a fixed salary that couldn't possibly saved up that much money.
Was it dirty money? No, it couldn't be. Who would dare to deposit dirty money so openly in a bank? Wouldn't they keep it in cash at home?
But if it wasn't dirty money, why had Tommy never mentioned it to her? And with so much money, why didn't he live in a big house like Alaric instead of their small place?
And the manager said the account had only deposits and no withdrawals for years. Was it like her situation, where her father had opened an account in her name when she was young and kept depositing money? Was it the same for Tommy?
But who would deposit such a large amount for him?
As she was thinking, a car horn startled her. She saw Alaric's car right in front of her.
"You were daydreaming while walking. Aren't you afraid of getting hit by a car?" Alaric asked.
Seeing Alaric there, Gillian was shocked. "What are you doing here? Are you following me?"
"I have better things to do. Rowena invited Stellan to a prenatal yoga class, and I just dropped her off. I happened to pass by here." Alaric glanced at the bank behind her. "Were you here for some business?"
"Yes." Gillian replied.
"Are you in a hurry to see your boyfriend? If not, let me buy you a coffee." Seeing Gillian's anxious expression, he wanted to talk to her.
Gillian was surprised. "Buy me coffee? Aren't you afraid your wife will get jealous?"
"Aren't you worried Tommy will be upset?" Alaric spoke.
"Tommy isn't that petty. He's still at work. If you insist on buying, I won't refuse." Gillian replied, opening the car door and getting in.
