Chapter 582 I'm Leaving, Gillian
Hearing Alaric's words, Tommy wasn't surprised at all. His hands didn't pause for even a second.
Of course, he knew Alaric had given him plenty of time. Since the fire at Gillian's place, he had made so many mistakes. How could someone as smart as Alaric not notice?
He never planned to hide. Now that Gillian's skin graft surgery was successfully completed, this moment was inevitable.
"Don't worry, I'll talk," Tommy said as he continued to gently wipe Gillian's face. "But please give me two more days. She just had surgery, and I want her to recover a bit more."
"Alright." Alaric had waited for the truth so long, waiting two more days wouldn't hurt.
"Have you told Mr. Emberlyn about Gillian?" Tommy asked.
"Not yet," Alaric replied. "Luckily, ever since she met you, she's been so smitten that she rarely calls Mr. Emberlyn. So even if Gillian hasn't contacted him recently, he wouldn't be worried."
Tommy chuckled to himself, thinking that Gillian seemed to forget everyone else when she was with him, acting so infatuated that it made Thomas not want to pay any attention to her.
"Then please inform Mr. Emberlyn in two days and have him come to take her home," Tommy said.
"That's for later."
If Thomas knew the truth, he would be furious and want to skin Tommy alive.
But Gillian had already sensed something was off about him, yet she still chose to stay with him.
Alaric said nothing more and turned to leave. After he left, Tommy's hands trembled, and his heart ached.
For the next two days, Tommy stayed by Gillian's side in the hospital. Since her successful skin graft surgery, her condition had improved significantly. Her pain lessened day by day with the help of painkiller.
A month had passed since she was burned. Finally, she was showing signs of recovery, and her mood was improving. Alaric had indeed given him enough time.
That day, Tommy carefully applied her medication and wiped the unburned areas with a towel.
"Gillian, you're getting better every day. You don't need to apply the medication as often, but you must take your pills on time," Tommy said, organizing her medications.
"I know. Can I be discharged now? I've been here for a month, lying in bed for a month," she said.
"Oh, wait, isn't the house burned down? Do I have nowhere to go if I'm discharged?" Gillian suddenly realized.
"Of course, you have a place to go. Mr. Knight has arranged everything. But it's better not to leave the hospital so soon. This is Stellan's hospital. The doctors assigned to you are the best, and the facilities here are excellent. It's more convenient to stay here and call for a doctor if needed," Tommy explained.
"That's true. Stellan is the director here, so I can stay here comfortably."
This was a high-end VIP room with excellent facilities and doctors nearby. Tommy had no worries.
"Gillian," Tommy called her, buttoning up her hospital gown. "I've taken a month off. I need to get back to work."
Indeed, Tommy had been here for a whole month, never leaving the hospital even for a moment.
"You're going back to work? Are you leaving now?"
"Yes, and I have to go on a business trip out of town."
"A business trip? Where to?" Gillian immediately became unhappy. "I don't want you to go. Can't you take a few more days off?"
"I've already taken a month off. The police station is always busy, and you know my colleagues have been working hard in my absence. The boss assigned me this trip, and I can't refuse."
Tommy gently persuaded her, "Gillian, come on, be good. You said it yourself, this is Stellan's hospital. They'll take great care of you. Just focus on getting better, okay?"
"So you really have to go? Are you leaving today?"
When people were sick, they relied on others the most. During her hospital stay, Tommy had been her rock. She didn't want him to leave.
"Yeah, I gotta head out soon," Tommy said, reminding her, "I've left your medications here. The nurse will remind you when it's time to take them. Listen to the doctors, alright?"
"Tommy," Gillian's heart tightened, and she asked anxiously, "Is something wrong? Are you in trouble?"
Tommy forced a smile and said, "What could be wrong? I'm fine. It's just a regular work assignment. If you don't believe me, I can let you talk to Neil."
"No, I don't want to talk to him." Gillian believed him after he said that.
"How long will you be gone? A long time?" Gillian held onto Tommy, not wanting him to leave.
How long would he be gone?
How could he answer that? Should he tell her he would never come back?
"Not long," Tommy lied, patting her head. "Be good while I'm gone. Get well soon. You still have to prepare for your PhD."
"I know. When I'm better, you'll still teach me."
Tommy just nodded, unable to say anything. After a while, he checked the time and said, "Alright, Gillian, it's time for your medication."
Tommy handed her the pills and watched her take them.
"Gillian, I brought some books for you in case you get bored," Tommy said, taking out a book. "Shall I read to you?"
"Okay," Gillian nodded.
"I'll read, and you listen." Tommy started reading to her. After a while, he glanced at her and saw she had fallen asleep.
The medication she took had a sedative effect, and his reading helped her fall asleep faster.
Seeing her asleep, Tommy closed the book and placed it on her bedside table. He took a deep breath, feeling a pang of sadness. Looking at her sleeping face, he couldn't help but smile bitterly and said, "Gillian, I hope you won't be so naive in the future. Some people are just not worth trusting."
His smile froze, and a tear rolled down his cheek, quickly drying. He forced another smile.
"I'm leaving. Take care."
With that, Tommy turned and left the room. Outside, Alaric was waiting for him.
Tommy said nothing and walked away, with Alaric following. Passing by a restroom, Tommy stopped.
"Mr. Knight, can you give me five more minutes? I need to use the restroom."
Alaric nodded, watching him enter the restroom.
For some reason, Alaric hadn't kept a close watch on him during this time and never worried about him escaping.
Inside the restroom, Tommy took out an old phone and dialed a number.
"Godfather," he said. "I've been exposed. You need to leave the country and never come back."
"Tommy, why? Why would you do this for a woman?" The person on the other end was furious. He could have avoided exposure.
"Fine, you want to protect her, I'll let you. But now you must follow my plan. Do exactly as I say. Do you hear me?"
Before the person could finish, Tommy hung up, removed the SIM card, broke it, and flushed it down the toilet.
He then smashed the old phone, ensuring it was completely destroyed. He would never use it again.
After finishing, Tommy walked out and said to Alaric, "Let's go."
