Chapter 547: The Murderer Caught?
Alaric really didn't want to go. He didn't want to get too involved with Tommy in the first place. It was bad enough that he couldn't avoid Tommy, but now Thomas was going to become in-laws with Josep, making their relationship even closer.
"Let's wait until Josep arrives to talk about dinner. They need to discuss Tommy and Gillian first. Maybe they won't even get along."
Hearing this, Stellan couldn't help but laugh, "Alaric, sometimes you really act like a child. Do you really not want them to get married?"
"No!" Alaric immediately denied it. "I said I wouldn't interfere in their matters anymore. Whether they get married or not has nothing to do with me."
"Alright, let's not talk about them. I'm going to take a nap. Are you coming?"
"No, you go ahead. I'll continue decorating the nursery," Alaric replied. "It's better to spend this time doing something for our future baby than worrying about their issues."
"Okay, take your time. Thanks, honey. I'm going to sleep now." After speaking, Stellan kissed him on the lips before heading to the bedroom.
She had been very resistant to the idea of pregnancy before, but with Alaric's meticulous care, she felt very happy, and so did the baby in her belly.
So, to welcome a new life, a little pain really didn't matter anymore.
Stellan fell asleep shortly after lying down in the bedroom, while Alaric continued decorating the nursery. Having spent so much time in the military, his hands-on skills were quite strong.
He had missed the pregnancies and births of Caspian, Harry, and Elisa, so he was determined to make up for that regret by personally decorating a nursery full of love for the baby to come.
"Baby, to welcome your arrival, I'm putting in so much effort. Your mommy is even willing to take risks to keep you, so you must try hard to be born safe and healthy."
This was Alaric's biggest concern right now. During the time he spent at home with Stellan, decorating the nursery was the best way to keep his mind from wandering.
His phone rang just as he was totally absorbed in his work. He glanced at the caller ID, a string of unsaved numbers.
Although he hadn't saved Tommy's number, he knew exactly who it was. He didn't want to answer but had no choice.
"Mr. Knight," Tommy voiced on the other end of the line. "The killer who murdered Hestia has been caught."
The killer has been caught? So quickly?
From his tone, it seemed like it was just an ordinary killer, unrelated to Astral Innovations Group?
"Got it. I'll head over right now," Alaric replied, putting down his tools and heading out. He instructed Mia, "Mia, keep an eye on Stellan. I'm going out for a bit. Call me if anything comes up."
"Okay." Mia responded promptly.
Alaric wasted no time driving to the police station, where the suspect had just finished being interrogated and was being escorted out by two cops.
Alaric glanced at him—messy and scruffy, yet still acting all arrogant even though he was in custody.
Alaric quickly looked away and saw Neil and Tommy walking over, one behind the other.
"Is it him?" Alaric asked, looking in the direction the suspect was being taken.
"Yes, he confessed to the crime of killing Hestia without any hesitation. We found the murder weapon at his place, a towel he used regularly. The fibers on it matched those found in Hestia's nasal cavity, and the hair extracted from the victim also matched his." Tommy explained.
"The murder weapon?" Alaric scoffed. "Leaving it at home—was he afraid of not getting caught?"
"He's just a lunatic," Neil cut in. "Not only did he leave the murder weapon at home, but he also displayed it as a trophy."
"What was his motive?" Alaric asked. "It couldn't have been a spur-of-the-moment thing, right?"
"Pretty much. He said he hated all women who went out at night. That night, he happened to be drunk and ran into Hestia."
How absurd.
"Your expression says you don't believe it," Neil explained. "I thought it was absurd at first too, but he has a prior criminal record. The previous victim was also a woman returning home late, but that time it was attempted murder, and he was sentenced to seven years. He had just been released a few months ago. If you saw his place, you'd find it all makes sense. It's dark and filled with contraband books from the black market, all describing the dark side of humanity and inciting crime. Anyone who reads those kinds of books for years is bound to go mad."
"Contraband books?"
"Yes, not available on the market. No idea how he got them."
"Isn't that a form of brainwashing, inciting crime in a roundabout way?" Alaric spoke slowly. "And why was Hestia out in the middle of the night during the trial? Who was she meeting? It's very likely she had an appointment with someone who then set her up, leading her to this killer and causing the tragedy."
"Mr. Knight, that's all speculation. As for why Hestia was out at night, we don't know. We checked almost all her communication records and found nothing suspicious in recent months." Tommy replied.
"Tommy, are you saying this case can be closed?"
"The suspect confessed, and the evidence chain is complete. By standard procedure, yes, it can be closed."
"Tommy, have you heard about Orion's car accident? If not, I can tell you about it," Alaric described in detail. "That accident seemed straightforward. She was speeding to see Ravenna one last time, and the other driver was drowsy from medication, leading to a crash that killed them both. They had no prior connection, and it seemed like a simple accident to everyone. But who would have thought it was actually a premeditated murder? I've never been a cop, but I've seen plenty of cases of using someone else to commit murder. You, as a cop, must have seen even more, right?"
Alaric looked directly at Tommy and asked, "Tommy, are you planning to close the case? You're not going to look into it any more? What if there's an unexpected breakthrough?"
"Mr. Knight, I understand your point, but I think you should consider another perspective," Tommy replied slowly. "You think someone set up Hestia to frame Mrs. Knight and then killed her to make it look like Mrs. Knight did it. If that were the case, the real killer wouldn't have been caught so quickly. If I were the mastermind, I would make the setup more convincing, ensuring all evidence pointed to Mrs. Knight to keep the police focused on her. It wouldn't be so easy for the police to catch the real killer, right?"
