Chapter 545: I've already compromised, don't push your luck.

"Dad, how can you discriminate against police officers? So you mean police officers don't deserve to have wives?"

Thomas was infuriated by her logic. "Is that what I meant?"

He was considering one part of it, but more importantly, like him, Tommy's job involved dealing with dangerous criminals.

What if one day, Gillian got kidnapped too?

Ever since Mrs. Emberlyn passed away, Thomas had been really firm about not letting Gillian get involved in dangerous work, and he didn't want her to marry a man with a profession like a soldier or a police officer.

"Not every woman has the ability to be the wife of a soldier or a police officer. With your headstrong personality, if Tommy isn't home every day, you'll be worried sick with the kids. You won't be able to handle it for even a day!"

"So I think you're a hypocrite. You know your job is dangerous, yet you got married and had kids. Why can't someone else marry me? What's the logic in that?

Don't talk to me about the future. Soon, Tommy won't just be an ordinary detective. He won't be running to crime scenes every day like he does now.

Tommy is exceptionally capable and has a bright future. I don't need to worry about him, and neither do you. Anyway, I've already slept with him. If you don't let me marry him, I won't live."

Thomas angrily scolded, "All this talk is completely useless!"

Seeing her attitude, it seemed like he had only two choices: either forcefully take her home, where Gillian would continue to cry and make a scene, or agree.

But if it was the second option, wouldn't he be compromising too quickly?

"Dad, you don't understand Tommy. He's really amazing. He cooks for me every day, and his food is better than a chef's.

He also takes me to work out. I feel much stronger now, and I want to pursue a PhD in finance, which he already has. He teaches better than my school professors.

Really, he's perfect. I've found such a great son-in-law for you; you should be happy. He'll at least be the Chief of Police in the future."

What?

"You think becoming Chief of Police is that easy?"

"It might not be easy for others, but Tommy can do it. How many in the police force have higher degrees than him? Even if there are, have they done undercover work as excellently as he has? Are they as versatile as he is? None of them are, so Tommy is the best. If he can't become Chief of Police, then no one deserves to be."

In just a few words, it was clear that Gillian was totally into Tommy, almost worshipping him.

Even though he was a general, she had never been this proud, but she was utterly smitten with Tommy.

"You're not a PhD, but at least you're a master's degree holder. After all these years of studying, how can you still be so naive!"

"Bookworm, right? Isn't that what happens when you study too much? If I had met Tommy earlier, I would have gotten my PhD already."

Thomas didn't even want to speak now. How did he raise Gillian? How could she lose her mind over love like this?

Seeing Thomas not speaking, Gillian tried another approach to persuade him, "Dad, if Mom were still alive, she would be just as satisfied with Tommy as I am. You can't just consider my opinion and ignore Mom's."

Thomas sighed deeply in frustration. When it comes to kids and their love lives, parental opposition often doesn't work.

Especially with someone like Gillian, the more you oppose, the more rebellious she becomes. Seeing how into Tommy she was, if Thomas continued to be tough, Gillian might really do something drastic.

"Becoming my son-in-law isn't that easy. I can't agree so quickly. If he wants to marry you, he has to pass my test." Thomas finally gave in.

"Fine, test him all you want. I have absolute confidence in Tommy!"

Thomas, too angry to speak, walked out of the study, and Gillian quickly followed.

"Mr. Emberlyn." Seeing Thomas come out, Tommy respectfully lowered his head and greeted him.

"Tommy, to be honest, I'm very angry that you started a relationship with Gillian without my permission!"

"Yes, it was my oversight and mishandling. It's my fault." Tommy quickly admitted.

"But I've never been able to control Gillian. This is a big decision for her, and I can't just go along with it so easily. I need to get to know you before making a decision."

Thomas didn't know Tommy well. He was just vouching for him because of a favor to a deceased friend.

Seeing how into him Gillian was, he wanted to find out what made Tommy so special.

"You two are already in a relationship and living together. I won't be unreasonable to break you up now." Thomas spoke to Tommy, "While I'm still in Arizona, have your parents come over. Let's talk to know each other's families. That's not too much to ask, right?"

"But..."

Gillian was about to say something when Tommy immediately responded, "That's not too much to ask."

"Good, as soon as possible. When your parents arrive, have Gillian call me." Thomas uttered, then turned to Gillian, "Until I fully agree, you two should stop living together. Gillian, come stay at the hotel with me."

"Dad, I hate staying in hotels. Why should I stay in a hotel..."

"I've already compromised. Don't push it. If you don't listen, we'll go home right now!"

"Fine." Gillian reluctantly agreed. "You go book the hotel first. Let me spend a little more time with Tommy."

"Just a little while. Once I book the hotel, come over immediately!"

"I know, you're so naggy."

After Thomas left, Gillian felt both happy and worried.

"Tommy, what should we do about my dad wanting to meet your parents? You haven't contacted them in a long time. Should I just tell my dad the truth? He'll understand."

Tommy felt very insecure about this. His family background was indeed much worse than Gillian's.

"I really don't want to contact my parents. Meeting each other's families is the most normal thing. I can't refuse this request. How about..." Tommy struggled for a while and then suggested, "How about I call Uncle Josep to come over? Since I last contacted him, he's been very supportive of me. And Uncle Josep has dedicated his life to medical research, never married, and has no children. Let's have him represent my family."
