Chapter 519: Cormac, I found out that you are a genius.
Cormac had seen that video, but at the time, his focus wasn't on that mysterious figure.
Alaric played the video again, slowing it down for him. After watching it, Cormac looked at Alaric with a confused expression.
Seeing his expression, Alaric knew he hadn't noticed anything.
"With such a blurry image, you can actually recognize someone?" Cormac uttered honestly, "All I can see is a shadow."
Alaric shot Cormac a cold glance, knowing it was pointless to ask.
"If we had gotten this footage earlier, we could have interrogated Todd. Todd was so close at the time, even if the person was wearing a mask, he could have described that man's build. But now, two of the three people on the rooftop that night are dead, and we have no leads."
All they had was this footage, but it seemed almost useless, providing no valuable information.
"Let's not talk about this for now." Since there were no leads, Alaric turned off the video and questioned Cormac, "Why did you come to Nexus Innovations so early in the morning?"
"Looking for a job, Mr. Knight," Cormac answered, feigning poverty. "Rowena and I haven't started our business yet, and with a baby on the way, I need to earn money in advance. I'm not a millionaire."
Alaric immediately retorted, "Stop mocking me. It's not like I kicked you out; didn't you resign voluntarily?"
"Yes, I resigned voluntarily, but now I regret it."
Alaric gave a cold laugh without saying a word.
"Alaric, come on. I've already asked; are you really going to turn me down?"
"I'd be thrilled if you came back to help me. How could I refuse?" Alaric replied. "Your position has been vacant since you left. You can come back anytime."
Alaric paused his work, looked up at him, "Cormac, I really think you're a genius."
"Are you insulting me?"
"Honestly," Alaric explained. "I'm different from you. I've been busy every day since I can remember, except when I was recovering from illness. I've never wasted a day. But you? You spent your school days eating, drinking, playing, and dating, yet you still learned everything you needed to. I truly admire that. Especially during your time at Nexus Innovations, I discovered another side of you. With your abilities, being just a psychologist is a waste. Instead of helping Rowena start a music academy, you should start your own business. You could totally go back to the Nash family's old business of running a brokerage firm. Rowena is a singer; it would be perfect. You could use your time at Nexus Innovations to gain experience, and leave whenever you're ready."
Cormac was surprised by Alaric's seriousness.
"If you need startup funds, just let me know," Alaric added.
"Alright, with that, I'm glad to have you as a friend."
Alaric just smiled faintly. Only through shared hardships can one recognize true friends.
He and Cormac had been through a lot, from friends to estranged and back to friends. To him, Cormac was one of the closest people, aside from Stellan, Caspian, Harry, and Elisa.
"I'll issue the paperwork right away; you can start immediately," Alaric continued. "Since you're here, you can take over the company's affairs for a while. I want to take a few days off to spend with Stellan."
The three-month prenatal checkup was their first hurdle, and Alaric knew Stellan would be anxious. He wanted to spend more time with her.
"It's rare for you to take a break," Cormac agreed. "Alright, even though Rowena is also pregnant, her condition is stable, and she has her own things to do. I'll take care of Nexus Innovations for now."
"Thanks." Alaric said lightly.
For him, Cormac's arrival was timely, giving him some personal time.
Stellan's lawsuit against Hestia needed urgent attention. After finding a lawyer and discussing the case, it was already late.
As he left the office, heavy clouds brought rain, followed by thunder and lightning. The rain intensified.
Seeing the weather, Alaric quickly got into his car, worried that Stellan might be scared at home. He started the car immediately.
But due to the heavy rain, the road conditions were poor, and the drive was slow.
When the phone rang, Alaric quickly answered.
"Alaric, where are you now?"
"On my way home."
"You've already left Nexus Innovations? I was going to tell you to wait until the rain let up. Be careful and drive slowly."
"I know," Alaric added. "The weather is bad, so Caspian, Harry, and Elisa are staying at school. Don't worry; I'll be home soon."
"Okay."
After the call, Gillian pouted and voiced, "You two are so sweet every day; I'm jealous."
"The rain is heavy, and he's driving. Of course, I have to remind him."
"I don't get it. You have everything at home—chefs, maids, drivers—why do you insist on doing everything yourself? Isn't it tiring?" Gillian complained. "If you want to do everything yourself, why hire so many people?"
"Everyone has their own way of living. Whatever makes you happy. Alaric doesn't like using a driver. I used to worry when he wasn't well, but now that he's fully recovered, I don't worry anymore. If he wants to drive, let him drive."
"I still don't get it," Gillian uttered. "If I ever get married, I don't care if he cooks or not. I won't cook or do housework, and having kids depends on my mood."
Stellan just smiled. She was about to say something when she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen.
"What's wrong?" Gillian asked quickly.
"Nothing. The doctor said it's normal. It'll pass. Just don't tell Alaric."
If Alaric knew Stellan still had abdominal pain, he would immediately take her for an abortion.
"Don't worry, I won't say anything," Gillian questioned. "But what will you do now? Can you take medicine while pregnant?"
Stellan shook her head. She couldn't take medicine while pregnant.
"Gillian, can you get me some water?" The pain was getting worse, and Stellan thought drinking more water might help.
"Sure." Since the water was nearby, Gillian poured a full glass.
Because it was full, Gillian didn't realize it was hot. The water spilled and burned her hand, causing Gillian to jerk.
Stellan was about to take the glass when the hot water spilled on Stellan's hand, and the glass fell to the floor.
Stellan couldn't help but cry out in pain, and just then, Alaric walked in.
