Chapter 605 Tommy's Narrative (2)
"Did you become a cop just to protect him?"
Tommy let out a bitter laugh at Alaric's question. "Am I an idiot? I must be. Why would I have such a dumb idea? But..."
Tommy's eyes, red with emotion, met Alaric's. "Mr. Knight, you probably never had to deal with this, right? Going to your biological dad's house, he'd hide the good food, wouldn't even give me a bite. But my godfather, after a long, hard day, would come home all worn out and still save that last piece of bread for me."
Tommy looked down, and Alaric stayed quiet. He believed Tommy; after all, Joe hadn't run away because he wanted to save himself.
"Not long after, he opened a bank account for me. At first, he sent just enough money for tuition and living expenses. But I didn't want to use it; I worked part-time jobs to earn my own money."
"Then he started sending more and more money. Seeing that money scared me. I knew he was up to no good again, but when I asked him, he said it was just some big business deals."
"He kept telling me he didn't need money anymore and that he could help me escape poverty. He wanted me to enjoy life, and he'd make the money. But I'm not stupid; I knew the money was dirty, so I never touched it."
"One day, he told me his business had failed, and he had given up his old ways. He found a stable job and told me not to worry. That stable job was becoming a butler at your house."
"I thought he had given up his old ways. He said no one would come after him anymore, but I couldn't relax. If his crimes were minor, I would have persuaded him to turn himself in, but I knew if he got caught, it would be a death sentence."
"So I had this crazy idea to become a cop. I wanted to climb to the top, so if anyone ever reopened old cases, I could stop them and protect him."
"Becoming a cop was my idea. He never suggested it. When he found out, he was happy. He said he had been a thief all his life, and now he had a son who was a cop. It was great."
"I was always a good student, so I skipped grades and went to the police academy. I aced all the entrance exams, and then a superior officer approached me."
"He said he needed an undercover cop abroad, and I was the best candidate among the recruits. He asked if I agreed, and if I did, they'd send me abroad to study under the guise of a student."
"Of course, I agreed. I could continue my studies and quickly make a name for myself as an undercover cop, which would help me get promoted faster. So I went abroad, and those days felt like I needed 48 hours in a day."
"I knew I was doing something crazy. I couldn't make friends, and I didn't dare to. I studied and completed the tasks my superior gave me."
"I knew climbing to the top would be tough. I had to be exceptionally skilled and versatile."
"So I pushed myself to learn all kinds of skills, whether I liked them or not. I excelled in the tasks my superior gave me abroad."
"Then I got a mission to investigate the Vale family. I knew they had some connection to my godfather. I thought if the Vale family was involved in crime, taking them down would better protect my godfather."
"I could have joined the Vale Group directly, but since I had to come to Arizona City, I wanted to get close to you first. Although I rarely saw my godfather over the years, I knew roughly what he was up to."
"I knew my godfather's biggest rival was you. I was curious about you because I knew my godfather was formidable. There weren't many people who could rival him, especially someone as young as you. So I joined Nexus Innovations to learn more about you."
That's why Alaric had investigated him for so long without finding any close connections. Tommy rarely saw his godfather and never made friends. Now Alaric understood why Tommy had joined Nexus Innovations.
"After I joined Nexus Innovations, you didn't give me any substantial work. I knew you didn't trust me. After a brief interaction, I realized you were sharp. I was worried you'd suspect me."
"Especially after Marigold's accident and death. I knew it was my godfather's doing. He was afraid our relationship would be discovered. I was tormented, trying not to show guilt when I saw you and Mrs. Knight."
"That day, Mrs. Knight felt dizzy, and I helped her. You saw it and became even more suspicious of me. I was afraid you'd discover more."
"I thought it was better to let you misunderstand that I had feelings for Mrs. Knight, so you'd fire me. That way, I could join the Vale Group more easily."
So he had deliberately created misunderstandings about his feelings for Stellan.
"You calculated everything, even predicting I'd fire you."
"I'm sorry," Tommy apologized sincerely.
"Go on."
"After that, I got close to Ambrose. Everything I did was to gain his trust and gather evidence."
"You know the rest. During my time as an undercover cop, the superior who knew my identity died in the line of duty. But he had told me before sending me out."
"He said I might be gone for years, or I might die during the mission. He said it wasn't safe for only one person to know my identity."
"He told me if he couldn't vouch for me, I should find his wife. After the Vale family case, I planned to find his wife."
"But I didn't expect him to have told Mr. Emberlyn. I was even more surprised when Mr. Emberlyn saw the news about the Vale family and came to Arizona City to vouch for me. I was honored."
Thomas had come to vouch for him because, officially, he was indeed an undercover cop.
