Chapter 536: "He's my boyfriend, of course I have to protect him!"
"Gillian, you really are something!"
Last time Gillian said she liked Tommy, Alaric found it unbelievable, thinking she moved on way too quickly.
He already thought it was fast enough that they became a couple, but now they were sleeping together every night?
"Don't look at me like that." Seeing Alaric's expression, Gillian quickly looked away. "We're adults dating, isn't this normal? And you and Stellan even had kids first..."
Hearing this, Alaric was both amused and annoyed. Gillian, having studied abroad for so long, really had an open mind.
"Alaric, please don't tell my dad about this." Gillian pleaded, "It would be too mean to tattle on something like this."
"Tattle?" Alaric sneered, "You dare to do it but can't take responsibility?"
"We young people are open-minded, but my dad's generation is conservative, right? I'm just afraid of scaring him. Don't worry, I'll find a chance to tell him slowly. Just don't tell him."
"I don't care about your relationship." Alaric questioned again, "Gillian, I ask you, during the time you've been living with him, have you noticed anything unusual about him?"
"Unusual?" Gillian thought hard, then shook her head. "No, his life is really boring. After work, he cooks for me, takes me to the work out, helps me study, showers, sleeps, and then goes to work the next day. That's it. He doesn't even have friends, never goes out."
"What about his phone? Is he overly protective of it or doesn't let you touch it?"
"No, his phone is just lying around. I even know his password. I can look at it anytime I want." Gillian replied.
"Has he been making a lot of calls recently?"
"Other than work calls, no. I told you, he has no friends. His contact list only has a few colleagues." Gillian answered again.
"Does he have another phone?"
"I don't know. I've only seen the one. If he had another phone, we spend all our time together, I'd know if he was making calls or sending texts. There's no such situation."
After Gillian finished, Alaric started doubting himself.
Logically, if he had another identity, he would need to contact someone.
"Alaric, what are you suspecting with all these questions?" Gillian asked.
"Nothing."
"You're interrogating me like a criminal, and it's nothing?" Gillian uttered unhappily. "Alaric, you know I fiercely protect my loved ones. Tommy is my boyfriend now. If you badmouth him or make things difficult for him in front of me, I'll hate you. And! If you have no evidence, stop maliciously speculating about Tommy. My dad vouched for him. He was an undercover cop before, and he had his reasons for what he did. Why do you keep harping on the past? You're so petty!"
Alaric was infuriated again, "Gillian, if you weren't Mr. Emberlyn's daughter, with your stupidity, you wouldn't have survived till now!"
"No matter how stupid I am, I have to protect the ones I love, right? Aren't you devoted to Stellan? Stellan has no parents now, and you care for and pamper her.
Tommy is the same. At least Stellan had a comfortable life before her twenties. Tommy's parents didn't care for him since he was a child. How pitiful.
If he had your conditions, why would he become an undercover cop? Have some empathy, will you? Tommy has explained to you many times that he had no choice during his mission. You just don't believe him.
If you don't believe him, fine, but don't keep making things hard for him. You have power and influence, he's just a cop, he can't afford to offend you. As his girlfriend, I can't watch him get bullied. Of course, I have to protect him!"
Gillian's words really touched Alaric. He could deeply feel her love for Tommy.
"You like him that much?" Alaric asked.
"Of course!" Gillian replied.
"Fine, I won't say anything more. I won't ask you about him again."
"You said it. Even if you ask, I won't answer." Gillian voiced.
Alaric fell silent.
Meanwhile, Stellan and Tommy were still sitting in the living room.
"Tommy, what did you want to talk to me about?" Stellan uttered.
"This is a personal matter." Tommy spoke slowly. "I should have mentioned it last time I saw you, but I forgot."
"Personal matter? What is it?"
"During Mr. Knight's treatment, did you confiscate his phone for a while?" Tommy asked.
"Yes, because he kept calling Ambrose, and Ambrose was deliberately provoking him. I was worried it would affect his treatment. How do you know?"
"Because I was Ambrose's assistant then." Tommy explained. "Since I knew about it, I thought I should clarify. Ambrose lost a piece of land back then and was worried Mr. Knight had evidence against him, so he tried to contact Mr. Knight. But he was afraid Mr. Knight wouldn't answer, so he used a different number. You answered the call, and when he heard it was you, he hung up."
Stellan remembered that call. 'So it was Ambrose?'
"I was with Ambrose to gain his trust, and I did give him some advice, including getting the schedule Uncle Josep made for Mr. Knight's treatment. But I did change that schedule.
When you had Mr. Knight's phone, Ambrose used the opportunity to create trouble for you, including calls and a mysterious email.
The goal was to make you think Mr. Knight was hiding something about Marigold's death, to drive a wedge between you. But it wasn't Mr. Knight's doing. He didn't know."
After Tommy finished, Stellan was shocked. She had always wanted to ask Alaric about this but never did. So that's what happened.
"Despite all the attempts to drive a wedge, your relationship with Mr. Knight remained strong. That says it all. No tactic could break your bond. I apologize again for my past actions. You know how hard it was to gain Ambrose's trust, so..."
"I understand." Stellan replied gratefully. "Tommy, I really appreciate you telling me this. Thank you."
"You're welcome." Tommy spoke as he stood up. "I'll get to the bottom of this case. Sorry for the disturbance today."
As Tommy finished, Gillian came running down the stairs.
"Gillian, we should go."
"Alright, let's go." Gillian had been wanting to leave.
"Mr. Knight, Mrs. Knight, goodbye." Tommy said politely. Gillian waved at them and then leaned on Tommy as they left together.
