Chapter 601 Wrong is Ultimately Wrong
It had been ten years. Their rivalry had spanned a whole decade, but this was the first time they were facing off directly, out in the open.
He wanted Joe dead, and Joe wanted him dead. Neither would give an inch, because giving in meant death.
The two men were locked in a brutal, close-quarters fight, each trying to kill the other. Alaric felt like it had been ages since he had a chance to stretch his muscles like this.
The gunfight between the forces of good and evil raged on. The police had a decent number of officers on the scene, but this was Alaric's turf.
Just when things seemed evenly matched, Joe's reinforcements arrived, catching Alaric off guard.
"Hey Alaric, does this remind you of our first showdown? Did you underestimate me this time? Let me tell you, I got plenty of people willing to die for me!"
Joe was a master manipulator, just like with the maid's death—a perfect example of using someone else to do his dirty work.
"You brainwash them with those forbidden books, making them believe that dying for you is honorable. They're loyal to you, but what do you see them as?"
"What do I see them as?" Joe sneered. "They're willing to die for me. What else could they be but my soldiers? I didn't force them; they chose this!"
"You're despicable for saying that!"
"Doesn't matter. In the end, everyone dies. If I die today, you all die too. Sounds fair to me!"
With that, Joe launched a fierce attack on Alaric, who responded with equal force.
Joe had honed his skills over the years of criminal activity, but the age difference showed. Alaric was quicker and stronger, and soon had the upper hand.
Meanwhile, the police were suffering heavy casualties. The military reinforcements hadn't arrived, and the situation was becoming dire.
"Mr. Jackson, where are the reinforcements? We can't hold out much longer!" Vernon shouted to Neil, panic in his voice.
"Hold the line!"
"I told you, I didn't even get to write my will! My mom has a weak heart. If I die suddenly, what will happen to her?"
"Shut up!"
Neil was furious. Vernon had been spouting doom and gloom all day.
The police were taking heavy losses, but Joe was losing his fight with Alaric. Desperate, Joe pulled a gun from his clothes and fired at Alaric, who dodged quickly. The overall situation was turning against them.
"Finish this quickly before their reinforcements arrive!" Joe ordered.
They had the upper hand now. If they could eliminate the police and free Tommy, they could escape.
Joe's men, energized by his words, fought like bloodthirsty beasts, excited by the scent of blood.
If the reinforcements didn't arrive soon, Joe's prediction of their total defeat might come true.
"Godfather!"
Amid the chaos, Tommy's voice rang out. Joe froze upon hearing it.
"Stop!" Joe ordered his men when he saw Tommy, who was still in handcuffs and shackles, escorted by the police.
"Tommy, what are you doing here?" Joe raged at the police. "I told you to take him to the designated place! Alaric, you don't care about your wife, kids, or Josep's life!"
"No, Godfather!" Tommy interjected. "It's not their fault. I came here on my own."
"You came on your own? Why? Who told you to come here?" Joe scolded Tommy.
"Godfather, I'm sorry!" Tommy dropped to his knees, head bowed. He would rather die than see Joe die, but...
But in the end, he had revealed Joe's hideout. He knew that once he did, they couldn't escape. No matter how they struggled, they couldn't escape.
"Tommy, get up!" Joe said. "I don't blame you. I know Alaric manipulated you. Don't worry, I'll get you out of here today!"
"No, Godfather. None of us is leaving today. Even if we could, I wouldn't go." Tommy had never intended to run. This day had always been coming, and he wouldn't flee from it.
"Tommy, the game isn't over until the last moment. No one knows the winner until then. Trust me, no one can kill me!"
If Alaric could kill him, he would have done it ten years ago!
"Godfather, we were wrong from the start. You were wrong, and I was wrong. We can't escape that."
Tommy had feared this day since he knew about Joe's crimes. He had hoped his efforts could prevent it, but it was futile. As Alaric said, good is always good, and evil is always evil. No matter the twists and turns, the truth wouldn't change.
All his past efforts were in vain. Joe's crimes couldn't escape the law's punishment. That wasn't something he could change.
"Tommy!" Joe was furious. "Has Alaric brainwashed you? The game isn't over, and you're giving up? What did I teach you? Never give up until the last moment!"
"But if you persist on a wrong path, it only gets worse. The more you persist, the more wrong it becomes, and the harder it is to turn back, Godfather!"
Joe was enraged by Tommy's words and directed all his fury at Alaric.
"Alaric! What did you do to Tommy? Damn you! You deserve to die!"
Joe, in a fit of rage, fired wildly at Alaric. Tommy, standing nearby, quickly pushed Alaric out of the way, taking the bullet meant for him.
"Tommy!"
"Tommy!"
Seeing Tommy shot, Joe was devastated. He dropped his gun and ran to him.
