Chapter 109

"Kids, I never continued having an affair with your aunt Olivia. I only gave her money to ensure that both of you were well taken care of, plus you don't know the whole story."
"And that insane woman used all my money and lied that she couldn't afford to pay school fees for both of us. Indeed, she was trying to get rid of us, get us out of the picture and she succeeded," Vic complains.
"She wanted to get rid of anything that was standing in her way. I bet she was probably plotting our murder next," I gasp at the realization. She even chased Vic away!
"Lady Macbeth!" I say through gritted teeth.
"Whatever happened between your aunt and I is long gone. I know both of you have been through alot, especially since your mother passed away–"
"You don't even have the slightest idea of what we went through, dad! So don't say you know what we've been through." The scowl on Vic's face tells it all. He's as livid as I am, or even worse and when he speaks, he has direct eye contact with dad. "We're not the little children you abandoned years ago. We've changed, don't you forget that. I think I might just leave, because it seems like you're hiding stuff from us."
Vic shoots up from the couch and I stop him buy grabbing a handful of his cotton shirt and I pull him back with all my might. If he hadn't obliged, I'd have been left with a piece of his shirt in my hand.
"Where do you think you're going? This is not how mom would have wanted it to be and you know that. Sit the fuck down and let dad explain himself. He's your dad too, stop being such a wuss." I push him back to the couch and he lands on it with a thud. I move back to where I was seated and descend.
"It's okay, I understand, I don't blame you. I blame myself. For being such a complete jerk. No amount of apologies can ever make up for my mistakes in the past. All I know is that I am very grateful to have you both back into my life and if you allow me, I'd love to rekindle the bond we had. It'll take time, but we'll figure it out," he sighs and scratches his stubble.
"You didn't answer my previous question, what kind of a place is this? You seem like you have more than enough money all to yourself, why did you sell Roxy's painting for a crazy amount of money, trying to buy her love for you, huh? Is that what you want?" Vic is up on his feet headed over to dad but I stand and stop him again.
"Take a chill pill, Vic. Now, sit your ass down before you do anything you'll regret for the rest of your life," I warn Vic and be glares at me, one eye twitching rapidly. One thing about my brother is that he obeys me, he respects me as his elder sister and that's what I love about him.
I turn to dad, signaling him to continue, as I sink back into the much comfy couch.
"After everything fell apart, I lived each day regretting everything I did, even though I didn't do it willingly. I don't know if your mother told you but, Olivia often drugged me and then seduced me. I wasn't myself. But one evening, your mother and I had an argument, I hadn't paid rent, the electricity bill was too high and I hadn't come home the previous night. Olivia had drugged me, so when I came back home, I found your mother waiting for me. She hadn't slept the whole night and as soon as I opened that damn door, my face came in contact with the fury within her hands. She slapped me and hurled insults at me, but I didn't listen to her. I left the house instead and went out drinking. Olivia drove me back late in the night, I wasn't too drunk though nor was I high on Olivia's drugs."
"Wait, how'd you know she used to drug you?" I question.
"She confessed to your mother who in turn told me. Right... When we got home, Olivia and I started making out, the alcohol was kicking in, your mother came down from upstairs, probably because she heard your aunt giggling. She had a gun with her and she didn't hesitate. Luckily she missed my heart by two inches and Olivia called an ambulance when you guys left. When I recovered, I stayed at a friend's house, John Pierre, I assume you met him at the art gallery. While I was there, I didn't have peace. Everyone I treasured in my life had abandoned me. I got fired from work because I spent most of the time depressed and being unproductive... Fast foward, I finally decided that I had had enough of drowning myself in my sorrows. I started a law firm which is doing quite well. I named it after both of you, Rovic Law Firm."
My dad was a solicitor– I think he still is– a great one and I'm proud that he got back up after his downfall.
"You own Rovic?" Vic's eyes pop out. His previous mood changing pretty fast. He's now all ears.
"Yes," dad says.
"You know about it? I've never heard of it," I say.
"That's because you're not interested in the law. I've always admired the people who work there," well there's some interest in Vic's eyes, "Continue."
"Rovic has been making alot of money. I have the best barristers and solicitors over there, just so you know. The money that I gained, I used to start up this place. Now to your earlier questions, Vic. First, I didn't want to sell Roxy's painting, John Pierre came here and fell in love with it and demanded that I sell it to him. He's a good guy and I knew the money would be of help to both of you."
