Chapter 85

Scott's POV
The smoke is quite thick, I can hardly see a damn thing, just fire and smoke everywhere. Seconds into that house and we're both coughing like we've been in there for thirty minutes. My thoughts are racing, so is my heart and I keep wondering if we're doing the right thing by walking into a burning house.
I have a feeling she's here, I'm just not sure.
As we go through the fire, a huge piece of wood, that's on fire, from the roof, falls right in front of us, blocking the way. The heat is unbearable but we keep looking for ways to get to all parts of the house. It's not so huge but the fire is making us move even slower since we have to be cautious on where we're walking and going.
"There's a door..." I cough twice. "I think it's the only room," I tell Kye and he nods and coughs too.
"The door knob is metal. It could burn our hands if we try to open it," he says and we silently communicate in a second. Then with all our strength and agitation we kick the damn door at the same time. Inside, the fire is even worse!
The fire feels like it's calling us to our own deaths, but no way, no one's dying tonight. Outside I can hear the others yelling, calling our names.
"Guys are you okay in there?" Vic shouts from outside.
"Yeah!" Kye shouts back just as another piece of wood nearly hits him on his head and I pull him backwards just in time.
"Whoah!" he says.
We stand there at the door and my eyes scan the room, I can barely see anything through the thick smoke and fire but I spot something at the very end of the room.
"Look!" I cough multiple times while pointing ahead. "There's a bed!" I say.
Kye, who has the sharpest eyes, like those of a hawk, speaks.
"There's someone lying on it! We have to find a way to go through the fire to get there. I'll go–"
"No! I'll go, stay here, make sure we have a clear path to walk out," I say and I start moving to my right, where there's a pot on a stove. Someone must have been living here. The smoke is stinging my eyes, making them watery and it's giving me a runny nose.
As I walk carefully, I finally get closer to the bed and my entire body goes stiff as a board when I see her lying on that bed, breathless.
"It's her!" I cough while trying to analyze her status, her pulse rate is abnormally low and that makes me panic. What even makes me more angry is the fact that she is tied up to the bed. The ropes won't budge. What kind of monstrosity is this?!
"Fuck!... Kye, throw me your pen knife! She's tied up!" I yell.
"Okay, and make it fast, the roof looks like it's about to fall apart any minute!" he yells back.
When the knife gets to where I am, I cut the ropes and carry her from the bed. When I turn to move to the direction I came in from, there's more fire there. I take off one of the long coats I am wearing and I wrap it around her since she's still wearing what she wore to the river, her swimsuit and shorts.
"Shit!" I curse. Kyrah looks unconscious. I hate this! I hate myself for letting her go by herself.
"Kye!" I cough, the smoke is making me dizzy and I don't like the feeling. "Is there another way out?"
You are not dying here, Scott. Not today.
"I can't see anything right now!" he shouts.
"Go! Get yourself out of here, I'll find a way to get out with Kyrah!" I say as I carry Kyrah in my arms.
"Bro, I'm not leaving you here!"
"Kye, get your stubborn ass outside!" I cough. "We're coming out, doesn't matter how!" I yell. I can barely see him.
Kye has always been stubborn, I'd say I'm stubborn too. The ride or die type. Picture Roxy, we'd all die for each other, literally!
"Fine, I'mma find a way to get to you from outside, hang in there," he says and then silence takes over. I'm holding on to Kyrah but I have to place her back on the bed to look for a way out. The whole house is wooden and due to the fire, I am sure the wood is becoming weaker, so I choose a spot and I start kicking with all my might. This better fucking work!
"Fuck!"

Roxy's POV
Just as we're fetching another bucket of water from the well, Kye walks out coughing and lies on the ground holding on to his chest and I panic.
"Kye!" we all exclaim at the same time as we rush to him.
"Where's Scott? Is Kyrah in there?" I ask desperately.
"Why isn't he with you?" Wren asks.
Kye coughs, trying to catch his breath.
"They're both trapped inside..." he coughs again. "There was no way I could get to him." The smoke has made him weak and he's sweating.
Right now I can't feel anything, all I want, is to see my best friends alive.
"Wren, help Kye up and move away from the fire, watch over him. Vic, grab that bucket of water and follow me, I have an idea," I say.
I don't even know if it'll work but fuck it! Let's do this!
