Chapter 184

There, we explain everything we know and she introduces to us the officer that will be incharge of the investigation.
"A few days ago we got a call from a man about an accident along the northern ocean road. An ambulance was sent right way... but only a lady was taken to the hospital. We'll try our best and look for your friend, okay?" the officer says.
"Officer Monroe will help you out. I would suggest that you go visit the scene of the accident... I am truly sorry about what happened," Claire says and I thank her before leaving.

At the scene of the tragic accident, we find other officers there. My eyes widen when I see the damaged guard rail and down below, the truck that my two friends were in. There's a yellow line on the guard rail that says 'Do not cross' but I so badly want to rush down there although it's too steep and dangerous.
An officer suggests that they need a chopper to drop down two or three officers of his rescue team, since no one is able to get to the car by foot.
Officer Monroe organizes for a chopper and in less than thirty minutes, a chopper is flying right above our heads and it lowers carefully and the rescue team drop one by one using a rope-like ladder, together with Monroe.
My brother and I are getting impatient every minute that passes. I am biting my finger nails and Vic is pacing from left to right, huffing and puffing. I literally have my fingers crossed right now. I just want to see Scott and know that he is okay.
Please, God, let him be okay.
After two hours of searching around the area and inside the wreckage, Monroe returns and the look on his face gives me goosebumps and an icy feeling washes over me, freezing my entire body.
I look at him, my eyes begging him to say something positive.
"What is it? Did you find anything?" Vic asks impatiently.
"Unfortunately, we didn't find anyone," he says.
"Oh my God. No..." I whisper as my eyes move down to the truck down below.
"But–" I cut him off.
"But what?" I turn to him and move an inch closer to him.
He shoves his hand into his pocket and takes out a small transparent bag that has two phones in it. I stare down at them and I notice they are already damaged, dents and scratches everywhere.
"The red one was found in the truck, and the black one was found a couple of meters down below, close to the water... Does any of you recognize these phones?" he asks.
"The red one is Kyrah's," I say bitterly.
"And the black one is Scott's," Vic points out and then it dawns on me...
I take two steps back and my hand flies to my chest as I try to breathe. I'm hyperventilating. This only happened the time my mom died. Even with the fresh air out here and the wind gently blowing across my face, I am finding it hard to breathe.
"No, it can't be," I say in a panicked voice.
The officer stands there and purses his lips and the only words that come out of his mouth are, "I'm truly sorry."
"Explain everything, right now!" Vic demands. I can clearly detect fear and pain in his voice.
"From the look of things, it's like he wants to say that Scott fell in the water because his phone was close to the water–" Vic cuts me off when he growls and slams his fist on to one of the police cars.
"No! Check again. Get professional divers or something. Check the damn waters or else I'm going down there myself," Vic yells at Monroe. Vic had truly found a brother in Scott and a sister in Kyrah and I understand why he's angered like this.
"It's been more than twenty four hours now, if he truly fell into the water down below, I don't think he could have survived. This part of the ocean has killer sharks–"
"God, no! NO! Stop saying that! Don't say that again!" I yell at him with my hands covering my ears. "He can't be dead," I say.
"It would be risky to have my men in the water, so we have organized for some submersible machines that will go deep into the water and we'll be watching everything from a screen since they have waterproof cameras installed," Officer Monroe says.
Six more hours later, even the machines have found nothing.
Nothing!
No signs of Scott or even his clothes... nothing. All we have as evidence that he was with Kyrah in the truck, is his damaged phone.
My heart breaks at the thought of losing Scott.
"Still nothing. I am very sorry about what happened here, but it seems that your friend couldn't have survived. Since there's no trace of his body anywhere, not even in the water, my men assume that he... he might have been eaten by sharks,"
"Fuck you and fuck your stupid theories. I'm not believing in any of that, I am NOT!" I yell and run back to the car and burst out into tears, a hollow feeling surrounding my chest. Vic joins me in the car.
"Listen, Roxy. I know you're angry about all of this. So am I... but there's ninety five percent chances that Scott landed in the water. You've seen the truck, the entire windscreen is not even there and one door is missing. The driver's door, sadly... It's really painful to accept but–" Vic says but he's cut off by someone yelling.
"We found something!"
We both yank our doors open and rush next to Officer Monroe. From down below, one of the machines is floating on the water and the rescue team is trying to see what it got.
I stare closely down below, not even daring to blink and then... a door.
The machine managed to find the driver's door. That's not even progress if you ask me. We stay there for three more hours and nothing else is found.
Vic drives us back to the hospital. I've been crying for the entire drive.
"What will I tell Kyrah? How will I even begin to explain it to her? I can't just walk in to that room and tell her what? Scott died and was probably eaten by killer sharks? It doesn't make any sense, Vic. It doesn't," I wipe away my tears as we enter the hospital.
As we walk down the hall to Kyrah's ward, we hear yelling and we both rush towards the noise and at the door, we find Tyler and he looks sad and from the stench on him, I know he's super drunk. He passes us without even saying a word and walks away. Kyrah is crying, Wren is hugging her and telling her to calm down.
"I don't ever want to see him again," Kyrah yells and I am taken aback. Where are her parents? Why was she screaming? Why did Tyler leave like that? Why did she just say that she doesn't want to see him again?
"What happened?" Vic and I say in unison.
