Chapter 52
Wren, Roxy and I move to the edge of the deck and for sure, I have no idea what is happening until I hear Kye say.
"Shoot!"
I gather up the saliva I can and we all spit at the same time. Wren spits farthest, then Roxy and mine which apparently hasn't gone twenty centimeters from the edge of the deck.
"Oh bummer." I pout and cross my arms across my torso.
"Come on, it's just a game," Scott says and everyone laughs except Vic.
"I guess we're both losers, Kyrah," Vic smiles apologetically and my shoulders drop. "Anyway, Wren and I are going to catch up, maybe grab some pizza. See you guys later," and he walks away, alongside Wren. They'd actually make a good couple, I tell myself.
"And we'll probably head out and grab some KFC, isn't that right Roxy?" Kye grins at Roxy and I can see her beaming with excitement.
"Chicken anyday, anytime. See yah guys," Roxy chuckles as they leave.
They'd make an awesome couple, I tell myself again, watching Roxy and Kye.
You're busy wishing others were dating, what about you? Your relationship fell apart yesterday–
"So..." Scott's words bring me back from my bitter thoughts. "I guess it's just us." He sits at the edge of the deck, takes off his dark boots, folds his trousers and dips his feet into the water. I follow suit and sit next to him.
"You never told me about the barracks," I start and he looks away from his feet.
"It was right after my mother went away, my dad didn't want me to live with relatives, so I used to stay at the barracks with him. Until I grew up, met with Kye who had just joined the military and we became best friends. Sometimes I used to join in their activities, like PT and band practice. I've learned alot. It's almost like I'm in the military but I'm not," he sighs.
"Wow! That's... That's incredible," I say.
"The rest is for another day. Let's talk about you. How are you holding up since yesterday?" he leans closer to me and I inhale his scent.
"I'm okay, I guess," I lie and he sees through me.
"Don't lie to yourself. I know you're not and I don't want you to spend the rest of the day thinking about it. Come on," he gets up and holds out his hand and I grab it. Once we're standing on the deck he tucks my hair behind my ears, "You should have brought something to tie your hair," and he smiles. Color fills my cheeks and I look away.
I shove my hands into the back pockets of my shorts and I find an elastic band which I use to tie my hair.
"There. All tied up now," I say once my hair is well tied into a ponytail.
"Great, let me teach you some basics about the spitting challenge."
"Oh, Scott. I doubt I'll be as good as you," I whine.
"Come on, stand here in front of me and I'll show you. You gotta make that sticky saliva right from behind your throat and nose. It's kind of disgusting but try it," he says, looking at me curiously.
I try to make that horrible sound they made earlier but I'm shy.
"Scott, I can't do this," I start laughing and he joins in, holding my shoulders.
"We're not leaving here until you get it right. All you need to do is hawk it down, then roll it on your tongue, up to the front, carefully not to swallow," he instructs.
I nod and try to do as instructed earlier. The noise I make disgusts me but, it kind of feels fun now.
"Good, good. Now, your posture is very important here. You got your saliva ready in there?" he inquires and I nod. "Okay, place your best foot in front of you, a couple of inches away from the other foot."
I get into position as told.
"Now, you'll need to pull yourself back a little and with the help of the foot that's behind you, you'll be able to move and spit forward with ease. Okay, get ready to spit with all your energy. On three, let's go. One, two... Three!"
Shoot!
And my saliva goes farther than I thought it could and I jump around in excitement.
"I did it! I did it!" I rejoice, and swing my arms around Scott's torso. He looks taken aback, as if he didn't expect me to hug him at that moment, so I let go but he pulls me back and I slam into his hard chest.
His deep gunmetal blue eyes boring into mine. His hands are gently placed on my waist and one moves to cup my cheek. His fingers brush my skin and I tremble deep inside.
"You're beautiful, Kyrah," he coos and my gasp comes out in a trembling wave. He leans in closer such that our faces are only inches away. I can feel a huge lump on my throat and I can feel the hairs at the back of my neck standing up.
How does he do that? Why am I reacting like this?
"You deserve to be happier and you deserve better. Always remember that I'm here for you," he whispers and I nod.
My entire body feels frozen and I can tell if it weren't for his arms on my waist, I'd be on the floor of the wooden deck right now. Because I can't feel my feet, at all.
His fingers brush my arms and my eyes widen. The feeling is electric!
"Let's go get some hotdogs," he says and breaks the spell then lets me go as he walks away ahead of me. As if nothing just happened. I'm left there standing and blinking rapidly.
What just happened? I ask myself.
"Wait up." I run to catch up with him.
