Chapter 89
Scott's POV
I'm standing next to the window watching birds fly and trees swaying outside when she finally wakes up. Her heavy sighs make me turn around and I find her staring at the ceiling. It takes me two steps to get to the bed.
"Morning, Bailey," I whisper as I sit on the bed. She forces a smile.
"Morning, Stone," she says and sighs. She still has the oxygen mask on. For a reason unknown to me, she doesn't want to look at me.
"How are you feeling?" I ask and she sighs again, still staring at the ceiling. "Uhm... Let me ask if it's okay to take off that mask." Then I rush out of the room, all the way downstairs to where I left Fred. He assures me that by now she's okay and that she could take it off. So I head back upstairs and help her take it off, I also help her sit up right. She still hasn't looked me in the eye even though my eyes are glued to hers.
Slowly she hugs her knees and places her chin on top of one knee.
I can't stand the fact that she won't look at me, so I ask again.
"How are you feeling now?" she lifts her head, stares at the ceiling again for seconds and goes back to her previous position.
"I don't even know," she whispers.
"Well... What's on your mind?" I ask.
"My mind is a dark place right now. You don't want to be there," she says and I remain quiet for a while.
She's not even blinking much.
"Kyrah, please look at me," I beg her.
"If I do, I'm going to start crying, so no." She sniffles. My heart aches for her to look at me, only once.
"I don't mind if you do, just let everything out. I'm here for you," I assure her and she blinks a tear away and turns to look at me. Her tears are about to fall. I want to tell her that she is safe in my arms and that my heart hurts every time I see her cry, that in a sea full of people my eyes would only search for her and only her.
She begins to sob quietly and I secure my arms around her and hug her. She's hugging me tighter than ever as her tears wet my grey shirt.
"Just... Let it all out. Cry it all out and then we'll talk. Hush now," I tell her, gently rubbing her shoulder.
"You're safe with me. I promise. And if you get scared, I'll be right here. I'm not going anywhere unless you want me to," I say.
She sighs and squeezes her arms around me. The feeling is out of this world and I hold her close to my chest.
When she pulls away, she wipes her tears with the back of her hand.
"Scott, I'm sorry–"
I frown. "What for?"
"You almost died because of me, all of you." She sniffles again and I cup her face.
"Hey. If there's one thing you should know, well... You have very insane friends who are willing to do anything, and I mean anything for you. So no need to apologize, okay?"
She nods and looks away.
"Please don't cry," I say as I wipe a tear from her cheek. "Just breathe slowly."
I take her hand in mine. I want to let her know that she's not alone.
When she's finally calm she lets out a heavy sigh.
"Thank you. I owe you my life. If you guys didn't find me, I'd be dead by now, gone. Forever," she says.
I don't even want to imagine that.
"I hope you haven't told my parents yet, have you?" she asks.
"No. No one has. I think you should call your mom first," I hand her my phone and she calls her mom.
Kyrah's POV
As I sit here waiting for my mom to answer, so many things are going on in my mind. What if she tried calling me and couldn't reach me?
No, she would have called Roxy or Scott. She always does that whenever I don't answer her calls.
"Hello." Her voice makes me feel alive. Few hours ago I didn't even know if I was ever going to talk to her.
"Mom! Hi..."
"Hi honey, are you okay? How's the trip?" she asks and I lick my dry lips.
"Great! It's uhm... Quite lovely out here, everything is amazing," I lie.
"Why are you calling with Scott's phone? What happened to yours?" she asks.
"Err... It accidentally fell in the river nearby."
Lies! Lies! Lies!
"Oh, I better tell your dad to get you another one then," she says.
"Thanks mom."
Just when I thought it was all good...
"That twat Blake was here a few minutes ago," she says and I choke on my own saliva.
"What?!" I can feel a big lump growing in my throat and I clench my fist and hold Scott's phone even tighter.
"What did he want?" I ask.
"He came here claiming that something had happened to you and he almost hit me! Can you imagine that?!" mom yells.
I am beyond angry right now, how dare he?
