Chapter 198
"Help me get Kyrah to the couch," Mrs. Bailey says and we carry her inside. Scott follows us inside, quietly, he looks quite different. He's wearing a confused look. Why isn't he saying anything?
He's walking with the help of one crutch.
I find myself staring at him for a while and he clears his throat.
Out of nowhere, tears begin to sting my eyes and in seconds, I'm crying like a little child as I run to him and hug him tightly.
"Where have you been all these years? We thought you were dead and... Oh my God, look at you!" He stays quiet. "Why isn't he saying anything?" I ask the lady who looks like Scott. His eyes and hers are the same color, their hair too.
"I'm so sorry we met this way. I am Katherine Stone. Scott's mother. You must be Mrs. Bailey and you, Roxy," she says humbly.
My mouth opens up but no words come out.
Mrs. Bailey is busy fanning Kyrah and I quickly open all the windows. I notice that Scott is still standing and so is his mom.
"Please, have a seat. We'll take care of Kyrah. She'll be awake in a few minutes," I assure them as I take Kyrah's shoes off.
"Are you sure?" Mrs. Stone asks and I nod.
"Just give us a few minutes," I say and they sit down.
After ensuring that Kyrah is okay and that there's fresh air flowing into the living room, she wakes up, but I stop her from getting up.
"Hey, take it easy. You just fainted and you need to rest, okay? Just lie down for a few more minutes," I say and she nods slowly and lies back down on the couch. She hasn't seen Scott again, so I guess that's why she just didn't react. She probably doesn't even remember what made her faint.
When she's fast asleep on the couch, I sigh heavily and glance over at Scott who is now staring blankly at Kyrah.
"We want to know everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. Don't leave anything out," I say, then turn to Scott's mom, "How do you know us? As far as I know, Scott has never talked much about you, sorry to say, and he's never even showed us a picture of you. We're only familiar with his dad," I say as I lie back on the couch next to Mrs. Bailey.
"Oh," she says, "It's quite a long story but the General told me all about you guys. He described you perfectly. He said you were close friends with my son," she says and I furrow my brows.
"The General? I don't get it. We all tried contacting him for a very long time but we just couldn't trace his whereabouts. Kindly fill us in on what we don't know and we shall do the same," Mrs. Bailey says and I nod in agreement.
"Well, I'll start with what I was told by my husband," she sighs, "Before the day of the accident, my husband had given Scott a watch. It was meant to help my son out of danger. Whenever he was in any kind of bad situation, he was supposed to press a certain button on the watch. So on that particular day, on our side, nobody knows what transpired during the day but later in the evening, my husband received a notification that helped track Scott down. He assembled a team and they went looking for my son and... and they found the vehicle that Scott and Kyrah were in had veered off the road and was a few meters away from the ocean," she sighs and looks at Scott. Her hands and trembling and so is her lower lip.
"Kyrah was trapped inside, she was unconscious. Scott on the other hand was unconscious too but the impact had thrown him out of the car and he was found a few meters below the wreckage. The General and his team did what they could to get them out of there and got them into ambulances. Scott, was taken to a military hospital and Kyrah was taken to the hospital that you found her in. That's what my husband told me," she wipes a tear off her cheek with a finger.
"No wonder we weren't able to know who brought her in," Mrs. Bailey says, "What happened on your side? Why did the General go M.I.A and what happened to Scott?"
"I got a call from the General, he told me that Scott was in a bad shape, so I flew from Spain and came to see him. I was there on a business trip. My son had bruises all over him. He... he had lost alot of blood and..." she pauses then releases a tiny sob before she continues. "The doctor confirmed that he had retrograde amnesia and he was also temporarily paralyzed," she bursts out into tears and Scott rubs her shoulder.
Her words hit me harder than a wrecking ball. My throat dries and my jaw drops as my heart begins to thump louder and louder.
"Please don't confirm my worst fears," I say as I try to hold back my tears by biting my lower lip so hard.
"He doesn't remember whatever happened that day. He also doesn't remember most people," she says and my heart sinks to my stomach.
"Oh, no," Mrs. Bailey whispers as she looks at Scott and her palms cover her mouth.
"So... does that mean he doesn't remember any of us? Not... not even Kyrah?" I ask. All of this feels like one crazy dream.
"No. It was until a few months ago when he started having recurrent nightmares. He explained everything to me how people in the nightmares look like. All his dreams actually, but I couldn't help since the descriptions weren't familiar to me. So he told his father who, from the descriptions, could tell who Scott had been dreaming about. He kept dreaming falling off a cliff with Kyrah and a girl with pink-blonde hair was calling out to them. Did you have such hair color?" she asks.
"Yeah. I did. I dyed it black as you can see," I say and she nods.
"As for the General. He thought that someone wanted to attack him but instead attacked our son. For his safety, he moved out of town and changed his phone number, emails, everything! He was also transferred from this region. No one was allowed to speak of his whereabouts. I joined him over there and we did our best to make sure Scott was okay and protected. We took him for therapy and with time, his paralysis began to decrease. As you can see, his feet are getting better now. Only his right foot hasn't fully recovered. As for his memory... Well, my husband and I figured that his dreams were a sign that we should bring him here. Maybe you can help him remember," she says. Her eyes are full of hope.
"Of course. Yes. We will. All of us... I am so, so sorry for what happened," I say and then turn to Scott, "We missed you so much. Kyrah and I will do anything and everything we can to help you," I say and he stays quiet but to my surprise, he responds.
"I will highly appreciate that... You're Roxy, right?" he asks and a wave of emotions hits me so hard that I begin sobbing at the realization that he doesn't remember me. I can't even imagine how Kyrah will react when she wakes up.
This is horrifying!
"His dad told him all about his friends. Only those he knew. That's why he knows your name," his mother says.
"Yes, I am Roxy," I whisper, "We'll tell you all you need to know about ourselves. Allow me to explain on behalf of Kyrah what happened that day," I say and swallow dryly.
I'm definitely going to cry an entire ocean of tears by the time I finish explaining.
