Chapter 75

In about an hour we're done unpacking. At around 5PM Scott and I leave the others in the cabin and we head to the river.
I've never been this close to a river and the sight is amazing!
To me it looks like a sleeping cobra. The river lies quietly across the land in smooth seductive curves, beautiful in the evening light. The water looks very clean and against the noise of the birds that are joyfully chirping around, the gentle murmur of the water can only just be heard, a backdrop to the musical notes coming from above.
It's beautiful!
"The water goes straight to the ocean," Scott says and I nod, still looking around, amazed by the beauty of mother nature. "We could have a swim tomorrow."
"I'm not a good swimmer," I say looking at Scott.
"It's okay, we'll figure something out tomorrow," he says. "Meanwhile, let's enjoy this beautiful scenery before it gets dark."
We sit by the river and watch as the water flows, birds above us flying from one tree to another and squirrels playing around. I don't know for how long we sit there but before we know it, the sun sets and I can barely see and I am freezing. I didn't bring my jacket when we walked out, it's still in my suitcase.
"Here, have my jacket." Scott takes off his jacket and places it on my shoulders and I wrap it around me tightly.
"Thank you," I say and he leads the way till we're safely back to the cabin.
There we find the rest seated on the grass outside, around a bonfire.
"We were starting to wonder where you guys ran off to," Wren says as she rubs her hands together to keep herself warm.
"We were at the river, it's really beautiful," I say and Scott smiles.
"We'll go there tomorrow again, " he says and the rest respond excitedly.
"We've made dinner and left some for you, it's right in the kitchen," Kye says as he points toward the cabin with a stick.
"Alright, thanks," I say and Scott and I go inside. "It's really cold outside."
"Don't you want to go and sit by the fire?" he cocks his head to one side.
"I do, but just not with my food. It'll get cold right before I take my first bite... I wonder what they cooked," I say, walking into the kitchen.
"I bet it's spaghetti and meat balls," Scott says.
And to my surprise, they made spaghetti and meat balls.
"Yap! Lucky guess," I say and start serving myself a plate.
After our meal, we head back out to sit with the others.
"Ah! Such a lovely night to be seated in front of a crackling fire surrounded by fireflies and good people," Scott says as we sit down. The warmth from the fire feels so good on my skin.
Roxy is still awfully quiet.
"Hey, you alright?" I ask.
"A little headache, that's all. I guess the music we played in the car was too loud," she groans as she rubs her temples.
I see... Seems like her journey wasn't that bad after all.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier? Come on, let's go get you some medicine and a glass of water," Kye gets up immediately but Roxy hesitates.
"Go!" I glare at her and she stands up. Kye places an arm around her shoulders and I find myself smiling at them.
"Aren't they adorable?" Wren says.
"I've never seen my sister this quiet, you know," Vic adds.
"She'll be fine. Kye is a good person, he'll take good care of her," Scott says and adds a few thin sticks to the fire.
"She's just nervous," I say as I watch them enter the cabin.
"Err... Kyrah, can I have a word with you, over there..." Vic points at a tree a few steps away from where we're seated. "It's kind of urgent."
"Sure, I'm your 'second' sister, I'm all ears." We stand up and we walk to the tree. Scott and Wren are talking about something, although I can't hear.
"What's up?" I ask Vic.
He sighs and closes his eyes tightly.
"It's Wren. I'm not scared of her but the fact that she makes my body react in an extremely extraordinary way makes me nervous. I guess that's what's happening to Roxy too."
I chuckle.
"You like her, don't you?" I ask him and he shyly looks at his feet.
"Yeah, she doesn't know though," he says. "Is she even comfortable with us sharing a bed?"
"Yeah, she said she's okay with it since you two grew up together. Take it easy, Vic. She's a good girl, don't let your emotions or your nervousness make you screw things up. Just be yourself," I tell him.
He sighs heavily and blows air out of his mouth.
"Thanks, Kyrah. I'm glad that's off my chest."
"Feeling better now?" I inquire.
"Yeah, much better, I think it's time for her to sleep, she's been yawning for a while now. Plus we're all exhausted," he says while looking at Wren. Her face is glowing from the flame in front of her.
We walk back to the fire slowly.
"Hey, Wren, I think we should go upstairs, is that okay with you?" Vic asks her.
"Yeah, I'm exhausted. Goodnight guys," she says and stands up then they walk inside the cabin.
"Goodnight," Scott and I say in unison.
"I guess Roxy and Kye are off to sleep too," I say. Checking my phone, it's 11PM. Quite late.
"Let me put out the fire, wait for me inside," Scott says and I nod.
Once I'm in our room, I decide to take a shower. I think we're in the master bedroom since the bathroom is inside.

Scott's POV
Once I'm done putting out the fire, I go into the cabin, lock the front door, switch off the lights downstairs and head straight upstairs. I knock on the door but she doesn't answer, I decide to stand there for a few minutes then I push the door open.
I can hear water dripping in the bathroom. She's taking a shower. It'll be awkward for her to change her clothes when I'm here, it'll also be awkward for me because... I don't even want to think about seeing her in a towel. So I walk out and sit in the hallway till I'm sure she's out of the shower.
"Kyrah, you done yet?" I ask.
"Yeah, come in," she says and I open the door and behold, she's standing at the dressing table drying her hair with a blue hair dryer. She looks beautiful in those tiny white shorts and a large white t-shirt. Her hair is a mass of dark wavy curls. All I can do is swallow hard.
I lock the door behind me and sit on the bed looking at her. She's so beautiful. How can her boyfriend treat her the way he does?
"Are you ready to go to bed?" she asks.
"I think I'll watch an episode or two of Stranger Things, maybe. But I'll shower first," I say taking my laptop out of my backpack.
"Oh, I can try and watch one maybe, I'll probably fall asleep halfway through it anyway," she jokes.
I chuckle and she jumps on the bed then I play an episode for her. When she's distracted I take my shirt off and head to the bathroom. Inside it smells of her lavender shampoo and I can't help but inhale deeply this lovely scent before I switch on the water.
After showering. I walk out and find her asleep, the episode is still running and I shut down the laptop and place it on the night stand. She's facing the wall and I find it easy to change into something warm for sleeping.
Just when I'm on the bed, she turns to face me. Her eyes are closed. She looks so peaceful and I am forced to push away a tendril of hair from her face. I don't want to wake her up but my dumb mouth is already open before I know it.
"Goodnight, Kyrah."
I doubted she'd hear me but she actually does, because she replies seconds later.
"Goodnight, Scott," she says and I switch off the lights.
