Chapter 203

The past few days have been the best and the most rejuvenating. I have been spending all my mornings with Scott and in the evenings after I've locked up the gallery, the rest of my friends pass by and spend an hour or two with him too. His dad came a couple of days ago but I haven't had the time to talk to him, but I'll create time and say hi.
What made me excited was when Scott asked for my number. I felt a pang of nostalgia wash over me. The memories of the day he first asked for my phone number flew all over my brain and I remembered how happy I was.
Right now, I'm locking up the gallery with a wide grin on my face. It's a few minutes past 6PM. The exhibition is in two days, everything is ready and well-planned. I'm beyond excited and I can't wait for that day. As I am leaving, I bump into Oyster.
Just when my day was going well, he decided to show up. Urgh!
I roll my eyes while staring at my feet. Why did I leave my car at home?
"Kyrah. Long time no see," he says with a smile on his face and he walks towards me.
"Hey, Oyster. What are you doing around here?" I ask. Sometimes the way he just randomly appears out of nowhere makes me feel like I have a stalker.
"I was at your house and your mom told me I'd find you here," he says and shoves his hands into his pockets.
Why couldn't he just call me? Why drive all the way here?
"Oh. What's up? I need to get home early," I inform him as I zip up my black jacket. It's getting a little windy and chilly.
"I wanted to talk to you about something. Oh, and I saw that you left your car at home. Maybe I can give you a ride, if you don't mind," he says and I hesitate for a moment. I do need to get home early because there's something I have been wanting to do but I've been putting it off for days.
"Uhm... cool. Where's your car?" I ask and he leads me to where it is, and without wasting time, I get in as soon as he switches the car's alarm off. I notice that he wanted to open the door for me but I pretend I didn't actually notice a thing. He's done this before, tried to open doors for me but I have never given him that opportunity. On time, at the mall, he stretched his hand to open a door for me but I was fast enough to pull the door myself.
As we drive, I begin wondering what he wants to talk to me about. I choose to let it slide and when we're at my house, he walks me to the porch. It's already dark now.
"Thanks for the ride," I say and turn around to walk to the door but he grabs my arm and I turn around to look at him.
"Kyrah, I wanted to ask you something urgent. You see, my parents are having a small gathering at their place over the weekend and they told me to invite someone. I was hoping you'd accept to go with me?" he asks.
Say what now?
"Err... well, uhm I–" My words fail me when my eyes land on Scott who is right behind Oyster. How did I not see him? How did he even get there?
Oyster turns to look at what or rather, who has made my eyes pop out of their sockets.
"Can I help you?" Oyster asks while crossing his arms in front of his chest. He seems irritated, or over protective. I'm not quite sure.
"Sorry to bother you. I'll talk to Kyrah later," Scott says and turns around but I run and leap from the porch. My hands fly and hold onto his forearm.
"No, no. Don't go. Oyster was just leaving," I lie and Oyster gives me a confused look.
"Will you atleast think about it?" Oyster asks.
"I– I don't think I'll get time for that. I'll be busy. Sorry for disappointing you," I tell him and he looks a little heartbroken. He sighs heavily and tightens his fist while glaring at Scott.
What's with this guy? Can't he read the signs? I don't want him. At all!
"Kyrah, who is this guy–" he begins but I raise my palm to his face to stop him from saying anything else.
"Don't. Just... just leave, please. Thanks again for the ride," I say.
Well that went 'well'.
He shakes his head and eyes Scott one last time before he gets into his car and drives off. This whole time, Scott has been calmly standing right next to me and I didn't realize I was squeezing his hand with one of mine until he tells me.
"You can loosen up your grip now," he says.
"What?" I ask and he stares at his hand in mine, "Oh. I'm so sorry," I say and face-palm myself.
"Sorry about that. Oyster can be a little... I don't even know what to call him," I say.
"Is he your boyfriend?" Scott asks and I choke on my own saliva. Then seconds later I begin laughing hysterically.
"Dear God! He's not my boyfriend or ex and he creeps me out. Sometimes I think he's usually stalking me," I say and Scott's eyebrows shoot up.
"I don't have a boyfriend, just so you know. I haven't dated in years... Hey, why don't you come on in. It's quite cold out here," I say and I notice he's only in a plain white t-shirt that's hugging his chest like second skin and he's in black sweatpants and black slip-ons. He's using the crutch to support him.
Once we're inside, I welcome him and offer him a glass of orange juice. I call out to my mom but it seems she isn't around.
When I take a seat next to him on the couch, we both sigh simultaneously and say the same words at a go.
"I want to talk to you about something," we both say.
I chuckle a little and he smiles, his eyes twinkling a little and my cheeks flush red.
"You go first," he begs and I clear my throat as I try to find the right words.
"Well, as you know, the exhibition is in two days and..." I pause and blow air out of my mouth nervously, "I really wanted you to be my date."
Boom! I don't even know how I managed to say that.
My throat is already dry and I find myself sipping Scott's glass of juice as I eagerly wait for his response.
He licks his lips and a warm smile appears on his face.
"I'd love to," I say and I heave a sigh of relief as I pull him into a tight hug.
"Thank you, Scott," I tell him and I find myself caressing the back of his neck. When we release each other I feel so relaxed and calm.
"My dad told me he'll invite a couple of his friends to the exhibition," he says and then something hits me.
Kye.
