Chapter 36
"It was a tough thing to do. I had sold every single thing I had just to buy drugs and later on I was living in an empty house with only the clothes I was wearing. Hadn't paid rent in five months and so I went to aunt Olivia and she kicked me out. She was disappointed and angry and said she'd cut us out off her paycheck. So if you haven't noticed, sis, your fees most likely hasn't been paid-" Vic explains to us his story, once we get back to Scott's house.
"What? Why did she do that? She knows we have no money, dad is long gone, and mom is in prison. Where else are we supposed to get money from, Vic? Tell me!" Roxy yells, pacing from left to right, a habit that she's used to when she's worried and panicking.
"Roxy, please, forgive me. It was all my fault... If I hadn't gotten myself into drugs and alcohol, we'd still be on the right track," his voice is deep and sorrowful.
His eyes are a lovely hazel which brighten each time light hits them. His hair is ebony and unkempt, he's six feet tall, kind of looks like Roxy's elder brother although he's not. The clothes that he is wearing are worn off at the joints and I feel pitty taking over my soul.
I move across the couch where Vic is seated and I give him a warm hug. Scott looks calm and he's awfully quiet.
"Vic... I don't know what to say. I thought maybe Olivia was taking her time to pay the fees but if that's how it is now... I guess I can't do anything about it," Roxy complains.
"Working at the hotel wasn't paying me much but, I saved up a little for you sis." He stands up and pulls out two stacks of cash and a few coins and places them on the coffee table, sniffling.
"Vic? Wh-why? You don't have to worry about me, I should be the one taking care of you. You're my little brother." Roxy's tears are threatening to fall, Vic looks weak and tired and Scott notices that too.
"You don't look so good. Have you had anything to eat?" Scott questions and Vic shakes his head.
"Not for the past two days-" he says and Roxy forces him to sit down on the couch , as she kneels in front of him. Then she looks straight into his eyes.
"Enough of all the self pitty bro, let me work things out, for us okay? First, you need to eat and then we can figure out how our lives will be as from today. You need to rest first," she suggests.
"I'll go make some soup for you, Vic. For someone who hasn't eaten in two days, hard food wouldn't do you good for a start. We'll make you rice later," I say heading to the door, "If you need anything I'll be next door, just text me."
"Also, as Kyrah goes to make the soup, you need a shower, bro," Scott frowns, "I'll give you a change of clothes. Don't worry, I'm sure I have some that will fit you," he says when he notices Vic hesitate to stand up.
"Thanks Scott," Roxy and I say in unison and I smile at her.
"Be right back," I inform them, closing the door behind me and heading to our house.
Atleast Roxy and Scott covered up for me, so I won't have a lot of questions from my mom. It's almost 1400hrs and I find my mom in the living room busy on her laptop.
"Mom, Vic's here," I say, heading up the stairs to my room. I haven't even had a shower or brushed my teeth. So I choose not to say more until I am done freshening up.
After I have made sure I am clean and fresh, I go back downstairs and start preparing the soup.
"Err... What are you doing?" mom asks when she pops into the kitchen.
"Making soup, for Vic," I say as I stir the soup slowly.
"Huh?" Mom looks confused so I turn to explain everything and she decides to sit on the kitchen island to listen carefully. Every single detail that Roxy had told me about their family and everything that Vic told us a few minutes ago, is all I tell my mother.
"Good Lord! Poor babies. I wasn't aware!" she exclaims in horror.
"I wasn't too. Until I forced the truth out of Roxy," I tell mom as I check the thickness of the soup. Perfect.
"Where are they now? I haven't seen Vic in a long time. I must see him," mom says, leaving the island.
"At Scott's," I say, stirring the soup again and dubbing a finger to taste it "It's ready, I'll go take it to him."
"Let me come see him," she says once I've put the soup in a bowl.
"Could you make more chicken and some rice for all of us please, when you get back?" I ask and she agrees.
"Of course. I'd love to. I'll get the chicken from the supermarket later. Now let's go see that boy," she says pushing me out the door.
Once inside Scott's house, Vic is now lying on the couch, Roxy at the edge of the couch and Scott is seated on another smaller couch. They all turn to see us.
My mom gasps when she spots Vic and runs to where he is.
"Vic, oh little Vic, you're not so little anymore. Come here young man." she pulls him into a hug.
"Hey Mrs Bailey. How have you been?" he asks and she smiles. He's now in Scott's clothes so I assume he's had a shower.
"I've been more than great and I am glad to see you. Kyrah has told me everything and if you need anything, we're ready to help in any way that we can," she says, looking from Vic to Roxy.
"Here's your soup." I hand him the bowl and a spoon which I took from our kitchen before leaving. He smiles weakly and tastes the soup.
"Mmh... It's so good. Thanks, Kyrah," he says.
"Now, I'll make you kids some chicken and rice and you'll come over for dinner. Have you had lunch yet?" mom asks.
"Yes, we grabbed some burgers on our way to get Vic," Scott responds, switching channels on his large TV screen and lands on some news bulletin.
"Our reporter Jones Bailey, has more details on this," the female doll-like anchor says and the screen switches to introduce my dad. I always find it fascinating to see my dad on TV.
"It's your dad, Kyrah," Roxy says and we all focus on him on the screen.
"Famous tycoon and mogul, Max Dawson is now the owner of the largest five star hotel, Whitesands Hotel. It is said that he has now..."
Vic stands up when another man's face appears on the screen. Pointing at the TV, he starts yelling.
"That's him!"
"Who?" Roxy stands up and holds his brother's shoulders
"That man, he's the guy I told you about. Max Dawson. He fired all of us!" Vic trembles.
"What are you talking about?" I ask, because I am very confused.
"This guy came in drunk and a waiter
did what other waiters do, he only asked for a tip. The damn fucktard got angry and fired all of us, then bought the whole damn building!" Vic thunders in anger as he pulls the hair on his head and gritting his teeth.
Then it hits me.
I remember at the hospital, when Blake introduced himself to my dad and my dad said Blake was the son of a-
"What the hell!?" I hiss and everyone turns to look at me. My mom can't know about this so I change the topic really fast.
"That was very selfish of that man. Uhm... Mom, I bet some of us are getting hungry already, you know, go buy that chicken maybe?" my smile is pretentious.
"Alright. See you at dinner," mom says and walks out and then I curse loudly.
"Fuck! Vic, I am so sorry. Roxy, that man, Max Dawson, is Blake's dad. That's why I didn't want my mom to find out. This is bad. I feel awful," I sigh.
"What!?" Roxy's eyes are wide open and a scowl is drawn on her face.
