Chapter 95

Kyrah's POV
As soon as we pull up in front of Scott's house, I heavily exhale a breath I didn't even know I was holding. We've been away for only a few days but it feels like months since we left. The tragic things that happened back at the woods flash through my mind and I shut my eyes tight and shake my head trying to shoo them away, oblivious of Scott's eyes on me.
The feeling of his hand on mine brings me back into reality.
"Hey, it's okay. Trust me, your mom won't know. Let's go, shall we? I'll help you out with your bags," he says.
I sigh and open the car's door.
We've arrived before everyone else, clearly because Scott is a fast driver. I kind of miss the sweet smell of mother nature. The city feels so... Boring!
When I'm at the door, I hesitate for a moment before opening it. I have to master an act before anything else. When I open it, I find Snow seated on the floor. Seems like he'd been staring at the door when I opened.
The joy that shoots within him is unexplainable. He shoots from the floor and jumps into my arms, almost knocking me off my feet as he licks me everywhere.
He barks excitedly.
"Oh, my little guy. I missed you too, Snow. You're so adorable, give me a kiss, won't you?" I say and Snow licks my cheek, leaving a trace of saliva.
"Remind me not to touch your face," my mom says as soon as she comes to the door.
"Mom!" Immediately I put Snow down and run to her, like a three year old child that's been lacking motherly love for days. I hug her so tight that she complains.
"Kyrah, I can't breathe!"
"Sorry, mom. I missed you. All of you." Snow is now outside jumping up and down and circling Scott as he walks over with my bags. He nods at my mom.
"Good too see you again, Mrs. Bailey." He shakes her hand. How respectful, I think to myself.
"Good to see you too, where are the others?" she questions, trying to see if there's anyone else outside.
"Oh, they're on their way, and there's a new friend, whom I believe you haven't met yet. Her name's Wren Hudson. You'll love her!" the grin that I'm wearing on my face is so wide that I begin to think it looks unnatural. I sure hope it doesn't, because if it does, I look nothing less of a clown in a circus.
"I missed you so much! Even Snow, he's been sitting on the same spot after every meal, waiting for you to come back," mom tells me.
"Right where I found him? Near the door?" I raise my eyebrows surprised.
"Yes, honey. Also, your father just left. Your new phone is in your room."
"Thanks mom, I'll call him later," I say.
"Awesome, let me help you with your bags, Scott you're welcome." She pulls him into a hug. "Glad that I made just enough lunch. We'll just have to wait for the others then." She picks my bags and heads upstairs and immediately my fake grin fades away.
"I can't believe she actually bought it," Scott whispers.
"My face hurts from faking that grin." I turn to look outside and spot Snow rolling on the well mowed, green lawn. "Snow! Come inside." And he runs past us and into the house like a bullet.
After a few minutes, the rest arrive and we have a cheerful lunch. Wren and Roxy sure know how to fill the room with positive energy. You'd never even think I was about to die in a fire and they were trying to save me.
My mom is laughing at Wren's joke at the moment and I can't help but appreciate her smile. Otherwise, I wouldn't be sitting here with her, and she'd be crying her eyes out, mourning my tragic death.
"Oh, Wren, I am loving your energy. Why didn't I get to know you earlier?" mom wonders.
"I've known Roxy and Vic all my life, but met Kyrah a few months ago. Your daughter is lovely," Wren says as she wipes her mouth with a napkin.
"Aw! Wren. I'm touched," I say and genuinely smile.
"Anyway, Kye," mom turns to Kye. "It's nice knowing you too, how long will you be around?"
"Just this week and I'll be back to work. Being in the army is quite demanding, you know." He glances at Roxy and I can see that she's not pleased with Kye's words. He'll be gone so soon.
"Alright. I understand. Well... I'm in a baking mood, who wants some cake?"
"I do. Mrs. Bailey, your cakes are the best! It's been a while since I had myself one... Some chicken too, I miss your chicken, urgh, she makes the best meals," Roxy says.
"I know how to bake, I can help you," Wren says and she stands up.
"Well, I guess as you ladies are busy baking, we'll hang out at my place. Come over when you're done?" Scott asks.
"Sure," I tell him and follow the rest into the kitchen.
"Kyrah, wait," Scott stops me by grabbing my forearm and I turn to face him. "Take it easy, okay? Forget about what happened, have fun with your mom and enjoy every single minute."
I sigh and nod.
"Okay." My response comes out more like a whisper to myself than to him.
****
Two weeks pass and everything has just been plainly normal. I didn't change my number but Blake hasn't even dared call me.
Ah! That's because he probably assumes you don't have your phone or you're dead, silly!
Right.
"I'm going out," I tell Roxy.
"Where to? I'm coming with you," she says ascending from the couch as she shoves a biscuit into her mouth.
"The mall, and no, you can't come. I've been indoors for weeks, I need to stretch out a little bit and enjoy the weather by myself," I state.
She furrows her brows and opens her mouth to speak but she closes it when no word comes out.
"What?" I ask, grabbing my car keys from the coffee table.
"Since when did you 'enjoy the weather'?" Roxy says, finger-quoting the last words in the air.
"Since today. I might as well learn to appreciate every single thing in this world, since death is always calling me into its hands. I'll be okay," I say and walk towards the door but Snow gets in my way. He doesn't want me to leave.
"Oh, come on! Not you too, Snow." I roll my eyes and pick him up and place him next to Roxy then I walk out.
"Call me if anything weird happens," she says and I nod and close the door behind me.
When I finally halt in front of my car, I get this ugly feeling about the car but I brush it off and get in anyway.
I place my hands on the steering wheel after inserting the keys into the ignition and slowly drive away.
