Chapter 226
"Your Honor, as you have seen for yourself, the accused confessed that he indeed was responsible for the attempted murder of my clients Kyrah Bailey and Scott Stone. That's all, Your Honor," Mrs. Allen says and walks back to sit next to us and I huff out a breath.
"Any further questions from the Defense?" the Judge asks Mr. Elliot.
"None, Your Honor," he says. He already looks defeated.
"Another ten minute recess and when we come back, we shall get to hear from the Jury and get the final verdict," he says and smacks the gavel against the sound block and walks away. Everyone sighs, it seems we were all holding our breaths.
Blake has his face in his hands and no one from his family is even talking. They all look shocked. I'm sure none of them had any idea of what he had done. And if they did, then he probably didn't tell them what exactly happened.
Ten minutes later, the session continues and we wait for the Judge to be seated and has the defense and defendant counsel stand.
"Members of the Jury, have you reached a verdict or not?" he asks and a Juror, a person from the Jury, stands up and answers on behalf of the rest.
"Yes we have, Your Honor," the lady says.
"Very well. On the case of Blake Dawson versus Kyrah Bailey and Scott Stone, what's your say?" he asks.
"Your Honor, we as the members of the Jury find the accused, Mr. Blake Dawson, guilty," she says and the gasps and murmurs arise again, this time louder. I close my eyes as I try to breath and calm down.
"Thank you members of the Jury for your verdict, the court dismisses you. Now for my final decision," Judge Bradshaw says and stares down at some papers on the bench. The silence seems longer than usual and I am biting my lip so hard. I just want this to end.
"Blake Dawson, with evidence, you have been found guilty of the attempted murder of Miss Kyrah Bailey and Mr. Scott Stone. You are being sentenced to life imprisonment, with no parole." He drops the grenade.
"Oh God!" I hear someone from Blake's side say and suddenly, his grandmother faints and someone in the room screams. Carla is wailing like a toddler and so is Blake.
"No! This can't be happening to us. Why? WHY?" Carla yells out loud.
For a moment there's alot happening over at Blakes side, his grandmother is being carried outside by other relatives as Blake's parents surround him and cry together.
"Silence in court, please," the Judge orders and the wailing tones down and reduces to sniffles.
"My decision is final. The court is adjourned," he says and smacks the gavel again, then the Bailiff speaks.
"All rise," he says and we follow orders, then the Judge leaves and the wailing continues. On my side, everyone is glad that it's finally over.
Carla rushes over to me as Scott and I are walking towards the doors.
"Kyrah please don't do this to me. I love my son so much, he can't survive in prison," she begs, tears cascading down her red cheeks like a river.
"I'm sorry, Carla, but we were seeking justice," I say and at that moment, I see Blake being dragged out of the court room, as he protests, he's already handcuffed and he's crying and begging for mercy. Then our eyes lock.
"Kyrah," he says softly.
"Kyraaaah! Don't do this to me, please. I didn't– I didn't mean to do it. This isn't what I wanted. I am so sorry! Kyrah! Say something, please," he yells as he's being dragged out of the court room by two Bailiffs, while protesting and we all watch in silence as Carla follows him and hugs him for the last time, Mr. Dawson also joins them outside.
"Well that was intense," Roxy says.
"But we won," Vic adds.
"We finally won, babe," Scott whispers in my ear and his warm breath makes me feel less tense.
"Yeah. I can't believe it," I turn to him and pull him into a hug, then Mrs. Allen walks to us together with Johnny and Maeve.
"Thank you so much, Mrs. Allen. We really can't thank you enough," I say and I pull her into a hug.
"You really drove the other lawyer nuts, you know," Mr. Trent jokes and we chuckle. "That was a very good job."
"Thank you," she says.
"We also want to thank you for representing our daughter and Scott. We couldn't have done it without a good Lawyer like you. From the bottom of our hearts, we say thank you very much," my dad says.
"Alright, now that we are done with the case, I guess we can go back to our normal lives, right? No more threats from Blake," Tim says.
"Yeah, he's gone for good," Scott says as he pulls me into his arms. "Let's go home."
"Why don't you all come over for dinner tonight at my house?" mom asks.
"We'll be there," Johnny says and turns to his mom. "Hey mom, you'll love Mrs. Bailey's cooking."
"I can't wait then, see you all there," Mrs. Allen says and she, together with Johnny and Maeve walk to the car they came in.
The rest of us head home feeling victorious. But the look on Blake's face when he heard his sentence, will never be forgotten and the way he screamed my name, the tears on his face too shall remain unforgettable.
It shall all forever linger in my memory.
