Chapter 79

Kyrah's POV
A couple of hours later, Vic and Wren come back. Roxy is now feeling better and she's more than excited to go to the river.
"Come on! Let's go, I want to throw myself into the water," Roxy says as she pulls my arm.
"Is it too deep?" Wren asks.
"Not really, but first, let's go round the back. I wanna show you something," Kye says and we all follow him.
Outside, the birds are chirping merrily and the trees are swaying gently from side to side. The mud dried up and thank God it did, because I hate mud so much!
We walk behind Kye and go round the cabin where I spot a kennel. Is there a dog here?
"Axel! Come on boy!" Kye shouts and immediately a large German shepherd runs out of the dog house and nearly makes Kye fall down.
"Guys, this is Axel, he's a very good boy, very friendly but dangerous when messed around with. Axel, meet my friends," Kye says patting Axel who in turn barks at us.
"I assume that's a 'hello'," I say and Axel moves to where I am. "Hey boy, I'm Kyrah, you're such a lovely dog," I say kneeling next to him and he licks my face.
"Seems like he likes you. Let me try my luck," Roxy says and pats Axel on the head and he wags his tail. He then starts sniffing Vic's shorts.
"Axel goes around smelling people who he's not familiar with. So let him take his time knowing that you're all with me," Kye says and once Axel is done, he barks twice and goes back into his house.
"Nice meeting you too Axel," Scott says and we head to the river.
When we finally get there, I take in a long deep breath, facing the sun and letting the warm rays bounce on my face.
Everyone is getting ready to jump in, Wren is taking off her crop top and skirt, underneath she's in a grey bikini. The boys get in with their shorts, Roxy too. I remain in my one piece swim suit.
"Aren't you swimming, Kyrah?" Vic asks.
"She's scared of the water," Scott says and he chuckles.
"No I'm not!" I say, rolling my eyes.
"Come on, the water is very warm," Roxy says and then disappears into the water. When she comes back up she yells "Yeah! Now that's what I'm talking about, it's not so deep, babe. Just dive in."
"No, I think I'm okay," I say.
"Come on, Bailey," Scott begs. "Please."
I turn around and spot Axel watching from a nearby tree, lying down on the very green grass.
"I'll dip my feet in the water then," I say. "Hey Axel, come here." I call the dog and he runs and sits by my side. "Atleast I won't be lonely while all of you are swimming," I tell Scott and he moves closer to me.
His hair is wet and his huge muscles are being illuminated by the bright sun.
"How about, you take a swim with us and I'll make you a yummy sandwich after this?" he asks, his body halfway hidden by the water.
"Try harder, Stone." I raise an eyebrow.
"Okay," he says and looks at my wrist "If you won't swim with us, I'm going to give Axel that bracelet that's on your wrist,"
I gasp.
"But you gave it to me," I whine and pout.
"Swim with us or the bracelet goes," he says and looks behind him, Vic and Wren are racing in the water while Kye is teaching Roxy something, I just can't hear what he's telling her.
"Scott, I'm not a good swimmer," I complain.
"But I am," he says and lifts me off the edge when I'm not aware.
"Scott wait I–"
And we hit the water together.
I can't hear anything. I'm holding my breath and my eyes are closed. I can still feel Scott's arms around me and seconds later, we're up on the surface and I gasp for air.
"Oh my–" I smack his bare shoulder "Scott!" Then he chuckles.
"Sorry, I just had to," he says and smiles.
Axel is watching us.
"Sorry buddy, Scott here can be demanding at times," I tell the dog and Scott shrugs and laughs.
"Let me teach you how to float for today, is that okay with you?" he asks and I bite my lip when his arm goes tighter around my waist.
"Uhm... I'm a little scared of the water still," I say.
"Don't worry, I've got you... Always, and you know that, right?" he asks and I look up to face him.
"Yeah. Show me then... But don't let me go, okay. If you do, I'll kill you," I laugh.
"I promise, I won't let go," he says "how about floating on your back for a start?"
"Alright," I reply calmly and he wraps one arm about the small of my back and makes me bend backwards. The other arm goes to the nape of my neck.
"Now, do you see that leaf floating next to you?" he asks and I look to my left and I nod.
"Yeah," I say.
"I want you to imagine you're that leaf. Imagine how you'd be floating in the air instead of water," he says.
I close my eyes and try to focus.
"Good, now take slow breaths and don't lose your focus okay?"
"Okay," I say, trying to keep calm as much as possible. I'm imagining myself floating mid-air and the moment I open my eyes, I realize I'm floating away from Scott.
"I'm floating! I'm floating, yay!" I say but the excitement makes me turn to face him and in a second, I'm sinking deep into the bottom of the river.
I am trying so hard to kick but the harder I try, the current pulls me farther down.
I want to scream but I can't open my mouth, my hands are spread wide, searching for something to hold on to and in a jiffy, I'm wrapped in someone's arms and we're up on the surface again.
I open my eyes and my arms automatically go round Scott's neck, bringing my body closer to his. I suck air into my starved lungs.
"I'm sorry I let go, are you alright?" he asks looking at me closely, his eyes full of worry.
I don't know why, but I burst out laughing.
"Is she okay?" I hear Roxy shouting from afar.
"I'm fine," I yell back.
"What's funny?" Scott asks, holding me tighter than before.
"It's funny how I thought you wouldn't let go," I say.
"I shouldn't have, and I apologize for that," he pouts.
"No, how else would I have floated if you were still holding me? I'll try again next time," I tell him.
"Are you sure you're okay? You're breathing well, right?" he then rakes his wet hair with his fingers.
"Yes, I guess I'll sit with Axel and dry up, he's a little lonely up there," I say.
"But I'll be lonely down here too," he whines.
"You'll be fine–"
"Fifth-wheeling!" he cuts me off. "It's okay though, I respect your decision," he says and swims away after helping me get out of the water.
Axel is wagging his tail and I pet him for a while before I lay down on the green grass. Above me, I spot two beautiful blue birds at the top of a tall tree, they look so amazing.
