Chapter 173

Kyrah's POV
"Wow!" I exclaim in disbelief, my eyes slightly wide. I don't know how he did it, but it's beautiful. Right at the back of the truck, there's an airbed matress, a couple of different colored pillows, blue, purple, orange, etc, and a large fuzzy blanket and all around the back of the truck, there are twinkle lights which he has now turned on.
"Do you like it?" he asks eagerly, pocketing his hands and pursing his lips.
"Like it? I love it?" I squeak and hug him and he hugs me back.
He heaves a sigh of relief and rakes his fingers through his hair.
"Cool, hop in and let's watch the stars for a couple of minutes... or an hour or two maybe," he chuckles and grabs my waist then lifts me up on to the back of the truck. As I make myself comfortable under the blanket, he walks to the passenger seat and walks to the back with a pair of earphones and two drinks, a coke for him and mountain dew for me. I watch him as he gets under the blanket and when his thigh accidentally touches mine, I freeze.
Oh God!
"I've never thought of doing such a thing, it's pretty cool," I say after sipping my drink. Scott's can of coke hasn't been opened yet, he's just staring at it blankly. He's deep in thought, again and his jaw is clenched.
"Scott?" I say and he turns to look at me, his face being illuminated by the twinkle lights, and his eyes twinkling with hidden secrets.
"Yeah?" he responds, his eyes never leaving mine.
"Thanks for today," I say and he nods and stares at the ocean in front of us as the waves smack the shore every now and then. It's quiet and the dark sky looks like a masterpiece tonight with the large full moon and lots of stars all over.
"You're welcome..." he sighs, "Do you ever just wonder how deep the ocean is? And just how many things have been hidden by the water?" he asks and I furrow a brow, and tuck my hair behind my ear.
"Yeah, I do ask myself that alot. Imagine all the aquatic creatures down there, ship wrecks, lost treasure chests, even bikini bottom!" I say and he chuckles as he places his can of coke aside.
"You really believe SpongeBob and Patrick live down there?" he laughs lightly.
I shrug.
"Of course I do. Well, actually, nobody knows what's down there. So many things and people have been lost in the ocean. But at the surface, it looks so beautiful that you wouldn't imagine killer sharks and other dangerous creatures live down there," I say and take another sip.
"That's exactly what I wanted to say to you. That's just the perfect description of who I really am, Kyrah," he says while frowning, "I may look fine but deep down, I still hold on to a bad past that broke me. I'm like the ocean... My mom called again last night, and all the anger came back to me. I picked the call but I didn't say anything, she begged me to speak but, I hung up instead. She probably thinks I'm a bad person." He leans back on the pillows and seems to ponder for a while.
"No, please don't say that." I place my hand in his and squeeze it gently.
"Look at me," I say and he does, "We all have hidden battles that we fight every day, whether physical, emotional or psychological. It's just... how life is, but the greatest thing one can do to ease it all, is to talk it all out with someone. To continue living no matter what. I understand clearly how you feel about your mom, but just like I told you, Rome wasn't built in a day, so don't beat yourself up. Start by calling your mom and having small conversations. In order to take away the issue, you just have to face it head on. If you keep running away by avoiding her calls, you'll keep getting angrier and you won't solve anything at all," I say, finishing with a heavy sigh.
He rakes his fingers through his hair and a small smile appears on his face. He takes my hand into both his hands as the cool breeze of the night blows over us.
"I don't know what I would do without you. You've made me realize that life's too good to keep dragging around anything that'll bring you down. So I'm ready to let go and be set free. I'll call her," he smiles and pulls his phone and begins scrolling through his phonebook, "And tell her that I have a really cool friend." He chuckles and I grin back at him.
When his mom picks up, he puts her on speaker.
"Son?" she says. Her voice is quite lovely, but a little shaky. I'm pretty sure she's surprised that Scott called her.
"Hi, mom. How are you?" Scott asks and clears his throat. His mom stays quiet for a few seconds and Scott stares back at me, I squeeze his hand.
"Scott, honey..." she sniffles, "I'm okay. I have missed you so much. Your dad has been sending me pictures of you. You look so handsome," she says and breaks down, she sobs for a moment, Scott sighs and I rub his forearm gently.
"Thanks, mom. I've missed you too," Scott sighs again, "I... I don't know what to say right now, but I guess this is a start, right? I'm sorry I've been ignoring your calls and–"
"I understand why you reacted that way. And it's me who should be apologizing, we have alot to talk about, just promise me you'll stay in touch," she says.
"I promise. Mom?" he bites his lip and one of his hands scratches the nape of his neck.
"Yes, Scott?" she sniffles again and I stare at the phone keenly.
"There's someone I want you to say hi to. Her name is Kyrah, she lives next door and she's my best friend," he turns to me, "Kyrah, say hi to my mom, Katherine."
"Hi, it's finally great to hear from my best friends mom," I say with a smile on my face.
"Hello, Kyrah. What a lovely name. I'm also happy to know Scott has another friend apart from Kye," she chuckles and Scott does too.
"Come on, mom. I have lots of friends here," Scott says playfully. Atleast this conversation is going well.
"Is it true, Kyrah?" she asks.
"Yes, ma'am. There's Roxy and her brother, Vic. There's Wren, Maeve, Johnny and the twins, Jim and Tim," I say.
"That's amazing, I hope I'll get to meet you all some day. Scott, your dad tells me your new friends are really nice."
"Yeah, they all are," he says.
"Alright then. Kyrah, please take care of my son, will you?" she asks.
"I will," I say and grin at Scott.
"Goodbye, mom," Scott says, his voice getting slightly deeper.
"Goodbye, son." And she hangs up. Scott blows air out of his mouth and looks up at the stars, grinning.
"You did it, yaay!" I hug him and squeeze him.
"I did it. It wasn't that bad after all," he says.
"I'm so proud of you. How do you feel right now?" I ask, releasing him from my hug.
"Better. With time maybe we'll be having longer conversations than that one. That's another thing off my day's to-do list–"
I snort, "To-do list? What's on your to-do list and why didn't I know about it?" I pout.
"Well, I wanted to spend the day with you and I've achieved that, I've also called my mom," he nods his head.
"That's it?" I ask, raising a brow.
"Just one last thing," he says while looking deep into my eyes as he moves closer, his body inches away from mine.
"What's that?" I question quietly as I inhale his masculine signature cologne.
