Chapter 152

Quietly, I follow her past a couple of occupied cells and I spot Roxy seated on a small bench inside a cell that has large steel bars as a door.
My heart drops to my stomach.
"Roxy!" I say and she turns to look at me. "Where's Vic?" I ask.
"He's in another cell," she responds as she stands up.
"Are you okay? What did both of you do last night?" I ask but instead she tiptoes and tries to look over my shoulder.
"Isn't Scott with you?" she asks and I roll my eyes at her and fold my arms across my chest.
"Way to change the subject, Roxy. What did you do? For how long are you supposed to stay here?"
"It's a really long story and... they said that they'll accept bail after a week–"

Roxy's POV
"A week!? Are you fucking kidding me? Oh my God, what do we do now?" Kyrah is panicking and she's now pacing from left to right, raking her fingers through her hair.
"They refused to let me talk to the sheriff." I shrug just as my cellmate, who said her name is Kenzie, wakes up, yawning with her mouth wide as a hippo's and stretches herself against the floor.
"I see your friend is here," Kenzie says and I nod.
"Do you know her?" Kyrah asks.
"Not really. We met last night. Apparently, she's been waiting for two weeks for anyone to bail her out, but her family doesn't have the money," I say. "She was caught drunk driving in the middle of the night," I inform Kyrah.
"I'm not surprised you already made a friend here. Let me see if I can get you to talk to the sheriff," Kyrah says and she approaches an officer nearby. "Excuse me, is the sheriff around? I need to talk to her. Sheriff Claire Mendoza, that is." I hear Kyrah say.
"And who are you?" The male officer adjusts his posture as he takes a sip of his steaming coffee. It smells so good that I want to grab it from him. Too bad he's standing too far.
"My name is Kyrah Bailey," she says.
"The sheriff is busy," he says and I roll my eyes.
"Too busy to talk to me? Do you know who I am?" Kyrah flips her hair and frowns at the guy who looks least surprised.
"Kyrah, what are you doing?" I ask her.
"Just, let me handle this, okay?" she says and I shrug. "Tell Claire Mendoza that General Sylvester Stone's daughter-in-law has a message for her," Kyrah says and my jaw drops and the officer almost chokes on his coffee and I bite my lip to stop myself from laughing. "If you don't believe me, well, he's actually on his way here. My husband, went to pick him up at the airport." She crosses her arms across her chest and I turn around and grin widely. I hear the officer's footsteps fade away and I turn back around and notice Kyrah wearing her told-you-I-could-handle-this face.
"Daughter-in-law? I gotta say, I did not see that coming," I say shaking my head and she chuckles. Moments later, after Kyrah goes to the sheriff's office, a female officer with a large set of keys opens my cell and walks me straight to the sheriff's office, where I find Vic seated with Kyrah.
"The sheriff will be with you in a minute," the lady says and leaves. When the sheriff walks in, she barely looks at us, as she is busy on a phone call. She walks to her desk and takes a seat. As soon as she ends the call, Kyrah begins speaking.
"Good morning sheriff, I'm Kyrah Bailey and my friends here," she gestures towards Vic and I, "Roxy and Victor Trent, got arrested last night and they were hoping to talk to you..." Kyrah's word trail off when she notices the sheriff tapping her phone.
"Excuse me?" Kyrah says politely.
"What are their names again?" the sheriff lifts her head and stares straight into my eyes and her eyebrows shoot up.
"I'm Roxy Trent and this is my brother, Victor Trent," I say and purse my lips. The sheriff leans forward and squints her eyes as she observes Vic and I closely.
"Sheriff, my friends were–" Kyrah begins but the sheriff stops her by raising her palm to her face.
"Roxy?" Claire, the sheriff, asks and I nod. Suddenly she's up on her feet, leaves her desk and pulls Vic and I into a hug. Kyrah looks confused, she's now frowning.
"Wait, what's going on here?" Kyrah asks and Vic and I chuckle.
"Claire was my mom's best friend," I say grinning at the sheriff. Even though she and my mother weren't in good terms before she died, I knew I would need her help one day and right now was the perfect time.
"Oh my goodness, how I have missed you two. I could barely recognize you. You've grown so big!" She hugs us again and then frowns. "I heard about your mother and I regret that I wasn't there for you," she sighs. "You know what, whatever it is you two did, forget about it. You're free to go," she says.
"Alright!" Vic throws a fist in the air.
"Don't get too excited young man." She points at him. "Err... I see your friend here is quite witty." She smiles at Kyrah. "But, are you really General Stone's daughter-in-law?"
Kyrah bites her lip and looks at me, her eyes screaming HELP!
"Well, not really. But she lives next to the Stones and the general's son is our best friend," I intervene.
"The part where I said the General is coming is true though. Well he's not coming here at the station but to visit his son," Kyrah says.
"Alright," Claire says.
"But maybe one day you could be Scott's wife, I wouldn't mind." I shrug and Kyrah swats my arm.
"Stop," she glowers at me.
"Now, I have a lot of work to take care of, I'll see you guys out and sort everything here," she says and then I remember Kenzie back in the cell.
