Chapter 18

"Silent much," Scott says while stealing a glance at me. We've been quiet for about ten minutes in his car as he drives and I don't know what to say.
"Are you okay? What's up?" he asks once I fail to respond and pulls over at the road side and turns to me, then he squints.
"Why is part of your hair wet? Did Blake do anything bad to you? Kyrah, say something or else we'll end up sleeping right here on this spot because I am not driving until you say something," he sounds dead serious.
"Don't worry about it, I'm just... Well I was in his jacuzzi then mom called and then you showed up outside Blake's house, how did you even know where I was?" I ask and then my eyes narrow at him, "You didn't follow us did you?"
"No way! Why would I do such a thing? I was taking a walk to the donut shop and met Jim, he told me he saw you and Blake going inside Blake's house," he says.
"Oh," is all I can say, Jim lives close to Blake, but not too close though.
"Blake didn't do anything wrong. Just drive, okay?" I say when his glare becomes too much for me to handle.
"I'm just trying to look out for you Kyrah," he says and the car comes back to life in a split second. We stay quiet for the rest of the ride until we arrive outside my house.
"Aren't you coming in?" I ask and he whines.
"Do I have to?"
"You know my mom, so get that ass out of the car right now," I insist and he gives in.
I open the door and find my mom seated watching TV. I don't see any package around so I am wondering what she called me this late for, it's now half past eleven.
"Darling!" she squeaks "Sit down, both of you," mom says in an excited tone. We do as she says and Scott and I shrug not knowing what's going on. After a minute or two when I am already flipping the channels on TV, she yells.
"Snoooow!"
Is it snowing? I look out the window but I can't see anything and when I turn my eyes to Scott and mom's line of sight I scream in joy. A cute little west highland, white terrier is running towards us from the kitchen and jumps onto my mom's arms.
"Such a cute little thing. Kyrah, Scott, meet Snow," she hands him to me and I squeak in joy.
"Is it a boy or a girl?" I ask with a huge grin on my face as the puppy licks my face.
"A boy," a deep male voice comes from the kitchen and I look up.
"Dad!" I scream, leaving Snow on Scott's lap and I run into my father's open arms and he sweeps me off my feet like I'm a five year old kid. He's finally back. What a surprise!
"I missed you so very much my precious little princess," he says and kisses my forehead. Mom and Scott are watching both of us in awe.
"I missed you too dad, the puppy looks too adorable, I love him already," I say.
Dad spots Scott on the couch and Scott shoots up while still holding Snow and I take him and start petting him.
"And who might you be young man?" that's my dad.
"Scott Stone, sir. I live next door," my dad's eyes widen and I now know why. Am I the only one who couldn't tell Scott's resemblance to his father?
Oh well.
They exchange a firm handshake.
"Where's your father? I'd love to meet him, I only see him on Tv. I think he's a pretty interesting man," dad says.
"Oh, he's not around sir, for now, but incase he comes back soon, I will ensure he passes by," Scott says.
"I would love that," Dad says as he pats Scott's shoulder and goes to sit on the couch.
"Did your friend finally give in?" mom asks.
"What?" I furrow my brows.
"Your friend, the one whose birthday is today," she reminds me.
Totally forgot about that.
"Oh yeah, we had fun pouring water on her. My hair got a bit wet," I lie and Scott gives me a cold look and I huff.
I sit next to my dad as I pet Snow who is licking my face every two seconds. He's the cutest puppy I've ever seen in my entire life.
Moments later, after catching up and with my dad sharing jokes about his trip to Asia, Scott stands up.
"Look at the time. We have school tomorrow. I have to get going," he informs us. It's a few minutes to one in the morning.
"Stay, there's an extra room here," my mum offers politely.
"You forgot I live next door," he cocks his head to the right with a smile.
"I know but that house barely has anyone in it, I've never seen your dad since you guys moved here," my mom complains.
"What about your mom... I've never heard you talk about her," I ask, taking a bite of some brownies mom had made. Scott's face turns dull quickly.
"They got divorced and she moved to another country," he says.
I feel sorry for him.
Dead air follows for a minute.
"I'll see you out," I walk with Scott after he bids my parents goodbye. His car is still parked on our front yard.
"You could just leave your car here," I suggest.
"Good idea, I'll pick you up say... at seven sharp in the morning?" he asks.
"Cool. Goodnight,"
"Goodnight," he says back and pulls me into a hug that lasts longer than I expected. His arms around me feel strange in a nice way and I love his cologne. He rubs my back sweetly and pulls back and heads to his house.
That hug wasn't just a hug, or maybe I'm overthinking. I head back to the house, closing the door behind me.

My phone rings and I groan. I turn the lights on and look at my wall clock and it's exactly five in the morning.
Who could that be?
When I check my phone, it's an unknown number and I rub my sleepy eyes with curiosity then clear my throat before answering.
"Hello," I say.
"Good morning Kyrah, darling. Did I wake you up? Oh I'm sorry," a female voice it is.
I can't make out who that is and I pause to think but no one comes to mind.
"Who is this?" I ask while sitting up and placing a pillow on my lap.
She laughs sarcastically and continues to speak.
"I'm your worst nightmare," she says in a firm angry tone.
"Huh? Look you're wasting your time and mine, maybe you got the wrong number. Piss off!" and I hang up, switching the phone off completely.
Who could that be? I wonder. My mind is tired and all I know is that I don't function well when I am sleepy, you'd ask for my bank details when I am sleepy and I'd gladly give you everything without even knowing. I guess that's why my mind can't register who that person is.
Let me assume it's a wrong number, I tell myself and lie back down on my bed after switching the lights off.
