Chapter 81
Scott's POV
We've been swimming for a while now and I can't help but flash back on how Kyrah was so close to me. I smile and go under the water, seconds later I'm at the surface doing some backstrokes.
I sigh when the rays of the sun hit my bare chest. Just as I am relaxing and floating around, I hear a dog barking.
Is that Axel?
Immediately I pause and look around. The barking is getting closer and louder.
"Kyrah!" I gasp and start swimming as fast as I can, like a bullet in the air. She's far away from where I am.
Where are the others?
Where could they be? Has something happened? I stop swimming and call out to them.
"Kye!... Roxy!... Wren? Where are you guys? Vic?" I can't hear anyone responding so I swim as fast as I can, how did I even swim to this part of the river?
When I finally get to where they are, Wren looks terrified and Roxy is pacing from left to right, Kye and Vic are kneeling next to Axel at the side of the river. When I finally get out of the the water, my heartbeat increases with each step. Roxy runs towards me and pulls me into a hug.
"What's going on?" I ask.
"Thank God you're okay. Kyrah... She's not here, and we thought you were gone too... Someone hurt Axel," she says pointing at Axel.
"He looks like he's in so much pain," Wren adds, she's already trembling.
I move next to Vic and in front of me, Axel is lying on the ground with a very large cut on his stomach. His blood is oozing onto the green grass and he looks half unconscious.
"It looks like someone tried to kill him, let's just hope it's only a flesh wound," Kye says, taking off his shirt and a pen knife from his shorts.
"Any trace of Kyrah? I'm pretty sure Axel was with her," I ask impatiently.
"We can't find her but Axel came back with this," Vic hands me a smashed phone. My heart sinks when I notice it's her phone.
"We have to find her!" I say, sounding panicked. Kye tears his shirt with the knife and I help him tie Axel up to stop the bleeding.
"Let's go back to the cabin. Whoever or whatever did this could still be around," Kye says.
"What about Kyrah? I'm not going back to the cabin without her, Kye. I'm going to look for her!" Roxy sounds infuriated. I stop her by grabbing her wrist and she turns angrily.
"Don't you want to find her? Let me go!" she orders.
"Calm down! Kye has a plan, he knows what he's doing. Just listen to him, please. We'll find her," I beg her.
"Take it easy, Roxy. Everything will be okay. Kye's in the army, so we've gotta trust him on this one, he knows what he's doing. Let's go back," Vic pats his sister on the shoulder as she huffs air out of her mouth.
"I'll carry Axel and stay at the front, Wren, Roxy, stay close. Vic and Scott, watch our backs. Don't stop until we're safely back at the cabin," Kye says and we all nod. He lifts Axel from the ground, and the poor dog whines.
"Let's go home boy, you'll be okay," Kye tells the dog and starts walking.
We walk very fast through the woods and arrive at the cabin. Still no sign of Kyrah in there.
Once we're inside, Vic locks all the doors and windows.
"God! Where could she be?!" Roxy stomps her foot on the floor. She's more agitated now and her temper isn't the best to deal with.
Kye places Axel on the floor.
"I'm going to need your help guys, be very fast so that we can go back there and look for Kyrah. Vic, hand me some bandages and disinfectant from that little cabinet in the hallway, Wren, get me a bucket of water, Roxy, I'm going to need some stitching material, it's in our room, somewhere in the drawers. Be quick!" he says as they all leave to get the necessary stuff.
"Scott, give me a hand, slowly untie this makeshift bandage, as we wait for the others," Kye says and I obey.
Within no time, Kye stitches Axel up quite neatly, cleans up the blood, then gives him some water to drink and covers him with a blanket.
"It's only a flesh wound. Guys, I never thought I'd have to say this but... We can't go out there alone, we need old Diablo," Kye says and I can tell the others know nothing about it.
"Who's Diablo?" Wren asks.
"Red. My uncle's other dog that's not as sweet as Axel. He doesn't like people at all but he's a good sniffer," Kye says.
The last time I saw Red, also known as old Diablo, was two years ago when Kye's uncle had lost one of his cows at his farm. Someone had stolen it and the look on Red's face when he spotted the thief and whatever he did to that man made me understand why they nicknamed him "Diablo", Spanish for "Devil". The dog is ruthless, Kye always says the dog is a psycho but he's perfectly normal if you ask me, kind of. He's a black pitbull that rarely wags its tail. Red eyes, pointy ears and a rude face.
We head out to the back and right behind Axel's kennel, around a corner, we spot another kennel. Right outside the small door there's a dog bowl.
"Did you feed him last night?" Vic asks.
"Yeah, my uncle always leaves food outside his little house. He knows me, so don't worry about it. I even fed him earlier today before you guys woke up," Kye says when we finally stop behind him and he whistles.
"Red! Come out, boy!"
It's a little dark out here, the light bulb is a bit dim, and it makes it even creepier for Wren, she's trembling like a leaf, Roxy looks calm and determined to get this over with.
Kye taps the top of the kennel and a second later, the huge beast steps out, I've always wondered how it fits in that kennel.
Red sniffs Kye's hand and moves to me, he takes his time recognizing me and walks over to the ladies and barks at them. Wren squeaks.
"I don't like him at all," she says, hugging Vic tightly.
Red stares at Roxy for an awkwardly long minute and then he stands next to her.
"Alright! This is weird. I'm going to get Kyrah's jacket so that he can smell it," Roxy says.
"Good idea," Kye and I say in unison.
When Roxy comes back, she let's the dog smell the jacket and he growls.
"Uhm, will he be on a leash?" Wren asks.
"I doubt," Vic says, his eyes on the beast.
"He hates leashes," Kye says.
"Plus, he'd definitely chew it off," I add.
"Okay, it's now dark already, get warmly dressed then we can go," Kye says and we all move back to the cabin. Red, once in the house, spots Axel and realizes his friend is hurt, he growls even louder.
