Chapter 13
Luther/Diesel
I let Diesel out for a run with my Gamma Dean and his wolf Kratos. Diesel has been acting odd all day so I figured a run would help. He was antsy and irritable when he is normally a calm wolf. I asked him what was wrong and all he said was “ We have to go.” I let Diesel take control which I now think was a bad idea. He has taken me to a part of the forest that we have never been to before. I know there is another pack around here and we don’t want to cross their land. It could cause more trouble than I want to deal with right now. I need to figure out what is going on with Diesel.
We run for twenty minutes before Dean links me “ Where are we going man?” “ I don’t know. I’m letting Diesel lead.” Suddenly Kratos and Diesel stop. Diesel sniff the air. “ Luther, do you smell that?” he asks. I breathe with him and catch the sweetest scent ever. A mix of strawberries and chocolate. Definitely out of place in the woods. “ Luther, do you and Diesel feel that?” Dean asks. “ I feel sadness and despair. So does Diesel,” I said. “ I feel that and an urge to protect.” Dean says. “ Kratos wants to follow it. He says he needs to.” he said.
We both take off in the direction of the feeling and the smell. The closer we get to the edge of the woods the stronger the scent gets. Diesel runs full throttle to the edge of an embankment. I see the most beautiful woman sitting on a log. I can feel she is terribly upset and I see she has been crying. Diesel and Kratos take off down the embankment and around the lake. We are about ten feet from her but she hasn’t noticed us yet. Her smell is overpowering. Diesel purrs at the smell. I swear he wants to roll around in it. I don’t blame him.
“ Diesel, go slow. We don’t want to scare her.” I told him. I can tell he doesn’t like it when he whimpers but he does what I say. We get about five feet from her when she snaps her head up and looks at us. “ Oh. Hi. I haven’t seen you two before.” she says. Her voice is music to my ears. I could listen to it all night. Wait, she is talking to us. Does she know what we are? I see Kratos bow his head at her. “ What the hell was that?” I asked Dean. “ I don’t know, Kratos took full control.”
The girl waves “ I’m Alexandria. Lexi for short.” Diesel nods at her. “ You can come closer. I won’t hurt you.” Lexi said. Her eyes that I haven’t been able to stop looking at suddenly start to glow. Light bright aquamarine green. It is mesmerizing. I can’t look away as Diesel and Kratos walk closer. They sit down by her feet when Lexi asks “ So what are you two handsome boys doing out here? Not that I blame you. It is beautiful here.” Diesel puffs out his chest when she calls him handsome. Lexi laughs “ So you like compliments.”
She shakes her head “ Lexi, you are talking to wolves again. You have a problem.” Kratos whimpers. “ Sorry, I talk to myself sometimes. And apparently wild animals.” So she thinks we are regular wolves. And she is talking to us? She is not scared of us either. “ Luther, do you get a sense on her?” Dean asked. I breathe deep and feel her out. “ I feel something. Mostly human but something else. Something deeper.” I said. “ Yea, I feel it too. And a strong urge to protect her. Kratos does like that she is sad.” Dean said. Neither does Diesel.
Lexi reaches out her hand like she is going to pet us then pulls her hand back. “ I’m sorry. That was rude. I shouldn’t assume you want me to pet you. I guess I’m used to having Argos around.” Diesel growls at the thought of her touching another wolf. Lexi laughs “ Easy boy. He is just a friend. I think. He is a wolf like you. And I talk to him as well. He is my only friend actually. Kind of sad that my only friend is a wild animal.” Diesel and Kratos walk up and lay their heads on her knees. Neither like the feeling coming off her.
“ Aww. Aren’t you guys sweet?” Lexi says. She reaches out her little hand and scratches Diesel between the ears. As soon as she touches him I feel sparks going through me. “ MATE.” Diesel shouts to me. I can’t believe this beauty is our mate. I send up a silent thank you to the Goddess. I finally found her. We normally find them when we turn eighteen. Here I am twenty and I was starting to lose hope.
Lexi sees that Diesel has his tongue hanging out. “ Oh, goodness. You must be thirsty. I can’t bring you a bowl.” she says as she looks around. “ Hang on.” Lexi says as she stands up. She walks to the very edge of the lake and bends down. “ You can’t tell anyone about this. I normally hide this but you guys need to drink.” What is she talking about? I see her ball up her hand into a fist and pull back. She isn’t doing what I think she is doing is she? That ice is at least two inches thick. She is going to hurt herself.
Before we can charge to stop her she punches the ice two breaking clean through it. Lexi pulls back a few broken pieces to leave a hole so we can get to the water. Lexi stands up and wipes off her hands like it is no big deal. Her hand isn’t even bruised. “ Wow, our mate is strong.” Diesel says. “ Yes she is. She is definitely not just human.” I said. There is a beeping noise and Lexi looks at her watch.
“ Sorry guys. I need to get home and get ready for work.” she says and she walks away. Lexi turns her head over her shoulder and smiles “ It was nice meeting you.” Then she leaves. “ We aren’t going to let her leave are we?” Dean asks. “ Not on your life. We are just letting her have some distance so she doesn’t know we are following.” I said. “ Luther, we need to talk to our Elders. There is something about Lexi. No human is that strong. But she didn’t feel totally human.” Dean said. “ You are right. Something is off. But I don’t care what she is. That’s my mate.” Kratos lifts his head “ Congrats man. I felt protective of her before. Now I vow to protect her as my future Luna.” he says before we follow Lexi. I want to know everything about her. From where she lives, where she works. What she likes, nothing is off limits.
